Just got my 6230 to see what all the fuss is about.

Got my 6230 in yesterday off of ebay to see what all the hoohah is about
here is a mini-review compared to other phones i've had :

The first thing i looked at was the RF

I've heard "oh this thing is an RF monster, RF beast, RF prostitute, RF_______ (u can fill it in) and i have to admit it is pretty good
although the reception bars tend to jump up and down a lot, when im in fringe areas, the phone holds onto that one bar very well and clearly
i would say slightly better than my 6620, but leaps over my v551

The second thing i was anxious to try out was the fm radio
The radio is awesome, so clear and convenient. two thumbs up

mp3 player: excellent, great great sound coming through my hs-3 headset.
the only grudge i have is the whole placing it all in the root directory with no subfolders get's very annoying. Searching for a particular song with 100+ mp's is a pain, but i just put it on random for the most part during work. Sound quality is great and equalizer adds a nice tough....Volume is LOUD turned all the way up.

Screen....it's nowhere near the 6620, and not as good as the v551, but is not that bad. I mean it's small, you can't adjust brightness or contrast, but it's not too shabby. Little dark and pixelated at times, but not to the piont where i would get a different phone and sacrifice some of the features for a better screen.

camera....its vga, i don't really use it unless im drunk and feelin silly. But it's def not as good as the v551 or 6620. if you wan't a camera, go get a camera. the camera on a phone is for spur of the moment things that you can look at and laugh at, not to print out and frame.

So basically the 6620 is still going to be my baby. The screen on the 6620 is nothing short of amazing, but the 6230 is a great phone. A nice adjustment to a smaller phone for when i feel like switching it up.
Now, if nokia would only make an s60 phone that's about the size of the 6230 with a slightly bigger and better screen.

and i need to get rid this da*n cell phone obsession....

how is the center pad working for you?

I agree with you about the screen of the 6620 being amazing (and I had the 710a for a bit and this is an amazing screen too)

radio would be nice, as well as the size.

I'll probably grab one when they drop in price a bit more.

the center pad takes getting used to, id say i probaby accidentally hit one of the directional keys 1 out of 10-15 tries
i'm thinking of just buying a 6230i keypad from ebay, but i'm not sure yet

and i got this one brand spankin new with all oem stuff that comes with it for $142.50 on ebay +$15 shipping and $6.95 insurance
so it came to like $165 for a new in box 6230 isn't band at all. if you're looking for cheaper than that good luck....i was bidding for about 3 weeks straight

just gotta look around to get a good price, but i doubt the 6230 will take a huge drop in price anytime soon

but its def no substitute for 6620, i'll be keeping both to switch back and forth
very nice 1-2 combo.

having both phones, I'd like to comment, too. I was a bit skeptical about that blasted center keypad, but I have gotten to where I can use it with ease, no big deal. I'm still getting used to the fact that my 6230 can't do everything that the 6620 can. There's a few annoyances I have, but I think most of them will be fixed when I upgrade the fw. The main one that bothers the piss out of me is when you have a BT headset connected to the 6230, everytime you hit a button after a few seconds of inactivity, it pops those little volume bars up. REAL annoying. Other than that, the rest is stability issues, which I am told are fixed with the newer fw.

The screen, yes, it's small, so is the phone. Comes with the territory. I don't mind it, I was even able to watch Napoleon Dynamite on it and still enjoy it.

yeah i was just in the crapper here at work and watched a 50 cent video and some family guy

it's not bad, i think ppl overexaggerate how "bad" the screen is
but like i said it's definately no 6620

good to have both though for when you don't feel like lugging around the 6620...for me going to the gym with mesh shorts and having a wallet, keys, phone (6620), and sports drink was weighing down those shorts....
so now i have the 6230 for casual use and 6620 when i get back to school and go on track and field trips .

this might be a dumb question, but how are people putting family guy and music vids on the phones?

Posted by: chonga

well for the 6230, download nokia pc suite, free from their website
then you have to already have family guy, music video, movie ,etc. on your computer either by ripping it onto their using some software or just downloading the video's through p2p ...

then open pc suite and go to view multimedia and click the convert button and it will convert it to a .3gp file and you can then put it onto the MMC through whatever means suits you

quality is decent, nowhere near 6620 w/ smartmovie, but keeps me busy when im bored or on a long ride.

WOW thats really cool. I am in the market for a used 6620. i had no clue you could put vids on their to watch...

I wanted the EUROPEAN version but ended up with a 6230b... and I CANNOT part with it... it's exactly everything I want:

seamless BT connectivity with my Mac
MP3 capable
Good RF
Battery? how is that?

I HATE the center button and am so used to the SE GUI... the text part... I don't miss the HATING to miss which character I want as i search for the SYMBOL...

BUT WAP browsing is enjoyable, SEAMLESS setting sent from the nokia site (for cingular)

unlocked and SEEMS to not have all those glitches I read about (BT trouble)
ALRIGHT!!!

Email, still can't figure out the email BUT from what I remember on cingular branded phones IT DID NOT work... oh well i HAVE unlimited internet...

*edit* I may have spoken too soon... I was trying to transfer 4mb of a mp3... it would get stuck 2x at 3mb... DOES THIS SOUND familiar?

The battery life is excellent on the 6230b. I usually get about 5 days on mine.

Posted by: chonga

wow 5 days?

today is the second day im using mind and i guess the battery is still getting loosened up but i've been using the fm radio for about an 1 1/2 hrs and the mp3 player for about 2 hrs....bout 20 min of talk time and i have 3 bars left.

not bad i guess?

Posted by: xj911

haha, I thought I was the only guy that had family guy episodes on my 6620. I also have futurama, simpsons, and aqua teen, also have Kung POW the full length movie. The 6620 is definitely awesome, but also having the 6230 I can say I really like both phones but what I don't like about the 6230:

1. can't have different ringers for different people.
2. screen is tolerable but smaller than the 6620
3. can't load cool apps like smartmovie

but it does have:

1. better speaker than the 6620.
2. fm radio is nice.

Yeah, I never use the FM radio or the MP3 player as I don't have a headset or headphones... that is probably why mine lasts longer.

I have a 6620 and a 6230 as well, the first thing I did to my 6230 was purchase a 6230i keypad, it's much better now.

Unfortunately I couldn't live without my 6620 so I just let my wife have it.

Posted by: beatniks3

hey guys, someone with a 6230 please tell me how loud the radio and speaker are together?? loud enough to just use it on your desk as a radio???

on the speakerphone, it's VERY loud on the highest volume setting
loud enough to the point where it's too loud on my work desk
but i use the headset mostly

and another thing that bugs me about all nokia phones
the battery reads full for the longest time then the bars just start dropping like nothing .... sometimes can you leave you stranded on low battery within a day after you had a full tank reading

I think you are referring to Motorola.

no they both do it
the only phone i had that very accurately portrays battery life have been a siemens and any SE phone

today my nokia had full tank on the battery, lasted like that for the whole day
then all of a sudden today it's at 3 bars and i have yet to use the radio or mp3 player, same goes for my 6620

for this, Nokia makes a speaker-stand, you can get them on Ebay for like, $20-40, they're pretty smooth looking, you just set the phone in and it can be used to charge it, as well as listening to the radio/mp3s, and as a speakerphone.

It's called the Nokia Music Stand. There are at least two versions, both of which will work. I'm using the DT-1, which works well for my needs. The new one looks like it takes up more desk space, and is also much less "professional" looking, I'd say.

IT does have 5-6 different caller groups that you can assign different ringtone to each of them. But yeah, I know what you mean.

One of the reason I got a 3620 off ebay was that it has the ability to use different ringtone for EACH contact. And BTW, the RF on 3620 really blows 6230b away. It's hard to belive but it holds on to signals better and gets 2-3 bars more then my 6230b. Considering I got it for about $100. IT's a deal. I wanted to try out symbian too so everything worked out I guess.

yep! loud enough for that.
