Unlocking SMT5600 and a change to the IMIE

I got a private message from another member asking if when I unlocked my SMT5600 if the IMIE had changed and if so did it end in 01.

I didn't really give it much though but when playing around I noticed that it did. Does anyone know what gives?

no one had this happen?

i've learned through feedback from others who have locked and unlocked SMT5600's that the "01" appears at the end of the IMEI when it's displayed on the screen (or after you push *#06#). hope this answers our question.

Changing the IEMI of a phone is illegal.

Is the IMIE really changed or is it just how Smartphone is reading it?

I do not believe that changing the IMEI number is illegal here in the United States. Only changing the ESN (for CDMA phones) is illegal.

i suspect it's the way the IMEI is read by the phone. why they would add a "01" to then end of the IMEI is puzzling...hopefully someone can shed some light on this subject.

It's really not relevant: the 0 and 1 at the end are digits 16 and 17. The relevant IMEI: the first 15 digits.
That's it.

i agree that the frist 15 digits are the important ones... this is the first time i've seen the "01" included at the end of an IMEI when using the GSM codes "*#06#-->Send". i was originally concerned that the free unlocking process altered the IMEI by adding a "01".
