I have the same problem with my VX8000 even with wallpaper I purchased - it still has white borders - yet when you shoot a picture and set it as wallpaper it looks perfect.
The free solution I found was to find nice pictures or graphics on the internet and then use the excellent camera in the VX8000 to shoot it off my PC screen. The result is fantastic... even better than the ones I purchased. I made up some nice front and main wallpapers from Family Guy that I love. I'll never pay again.

Is 176x220 the entire screen size or the size after you remove and "always on" info at the top and bottom of the screen? If it is the total screen size, you may need to reduce the height of the wallpapers to fit the remainder of the screen. I know on my VX4500, the screen is 120x160, but I make wallpapers 120x130 to fit between the bars at the top and bottom of the screen.
