Panasomic GU87 Data Access HELP

First post…terrifying

I don’t know if this would be better served in the Cingular forum, but at this point, I think the solution may be phone based rather than provider based.

We recently migrated from the ATT network to the Cingular network and were told that even after our new phones (V551) were activated, we would still have access to all the data stored on the old phones (GU87)

In the past we have used the Panasonic Data Cable and the software downloaded from Panasonic’s website (PC editing tools I think) to upload our phonebooks and ringbones and to download pictures and it’s worked fine although it’s been about a year since I’ve done any up/down loading so my memory may be fuzzy.

So we come back from the Cingular store with the intentions of moving our phonebooks over to the new phones and despite what the nice Cingular associate told us, we have absolutely NO access to the data in the phones.

The way the PC Edit software works is that the phone has to be on the “idle screen” which I assume is the screen that displays your wallpaper, your battery and signal power and that stuff. Well, when we power up our old phones, the idle screen appears for a split second and then thee screen goes white and the message “Emergency Calls Only” appear. There is a menu option, but in there, the 2 choices are “info” which tells you “SECURITY FAILURE” and the other choice is “SOS” which I assume calls 911.

The data editing software doesn’t work because I can’t get to the idle screen and I don’t want to sound like a drama queen, but there are some VERY important and unobtainable phone #’s in there.

I called Cingular, they transferred me to ATT support who transferred me to Technical Support and of course with the way my luck works, none of them have the slightest clue how to help me.

I’m pretty dimwitted about all the technical aspects of these types of things, but the old phones have the old ATT SIM cards in them and the new phones have the new Cingular SIM cards in them. We tried switching them between phones and got the error message “please insert compatible SIM card”

I know the data is still there because when we power the phones up, for a mere 1.5 – 3 seconds I can see my old wallpaper and if I act with the speed of Flash Gordon during that 1.5 – 2 seconds, I can actually access my phone book. All the info is there, but I can’t access it because I can’t get to the “Idle Screen”

The helpless people in the support department suggested we go back to the store to have them “reactivate” the old phones just long enough to download the data, but with the less than stellar support I’ve received from Cingular so far, I can pretty much picture how that’s going to go.

“Sorry sir, there’s no way to reactivate those phones”

I’m hoping there may be someone else out there who has experienced similar problems and was able to work around them.

I’m not opposed to sinister methods of data retrieval, but with my limited knowledge of unlock codes and cracks and such; I’m sure I’d start WWIII if I tried anything like that.

So, if anyone has any ideas or suggestions, we’d love to hear them.

Do you not have the data stored by the edit tool? If so, why not just use that CSV file, open it in excel modify it as required to upload to your new phone using their tools?
Just a first suggestion.

We have an old version of the ohone book, but it hasnt been edited or updated in over a year and both my wife and I have each added dozens, if not hundreds of new contacts since then that are, unfortunately, not stored anywhere else, but in the phones
