Black Razr vs. Sony S710a

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Spongey817

Hey, whats up guys..Im new on the forum, and going to be new to Cingular, also...I previously had TMobile and the service (including customer service) sucked..so Im switching over, hoping to raise my bar...

But, I have a small decision to make...a Razr or a S710a...before i go on, let me say that i am getting both at the price of 0 dollars....

I need something with Bluetooth, MP3 Capable Ringtones, User-Friendly, and a substancial memory storage......

With the S710, i get my memory...32+32 with the card...yet, i previously owned a T610, and knowing of the laggy OS, im hesitant,

Then, theres the Razr..perfectly thin, yet only 5.5 mb of memory..

Which one should i get?

Posted by: PaisanNYC

I have both a v3 Razr and an s710a

V3 is only good for aesthetics (looks)

As you mentioned, s710a has 64 megs to start, the camera is 1.3 megapixel (only 640x480 on the Razr), and the newer firmware on the s710a (R2A firmware) fixes the OS lags

So your insisting i get the S710a

I heard it was a bit large..Hows it feel in a pocket? In a belt clip?

I was also learning toward the Ericsson..thanks for the help

Posted by: Devori

make a fist and insert into your front pants pocket. now walk around your home for a minute or two like this. this is what the s710 will feel like in your pocket. this thing is very noticeable.

Posted by: bsippl

I don't think the size is that bad, and it's definately not even close to the size of my fist. Out of those two I would definately get the S710a, the V3 is good but just isn't as advanced as the S710a.

id have the phone, most likely, on a belt clip unless i had forgotten to wear it, hence the reason i asked about the pocket...

im going to go check it out at the cingular store on saturday, and carry it around, after two weeks if i dont like it i will switch to the Razr...but i will most likely keep it

Posted by: MoeDrummer

I currently use my Nokia 6230b, but like to switch to the S710a pretty often. There's just something about the phone that keeps me coming back. I don't really mind larger phones, so my RAZR usually sits at home collecting dust. MP3's are the only reason I don't carry it around more often. If it had more memory I'd carry it more.

IMO 6230>S710a>RAZR...but that's just MY opinion.

so another for the S710...seems like a majority...the only thing that would make or break my decision is sizing..so i will see when i hold both in my hand..weight isnt a matter...its the bulkiness and length thats bothering me...

I don't think S710a is large at all nor does it feel uncomfortable in my pocket, but I'm 6'2" 270 lbs.

It might be uncomfortable if you wear very tight pants, but otherwise it's fine.

LOL!! i am 5'5" 120 lbs, and when working as a chef, even wearing loose fitting pants it was very obvious it was there.

Posted by: aresthoth

Get the Sony Ericsson (S710, that is).

Posted by: Shadowless127

it depends on what you want

if you are concerned about memory then do not get ANY of the moto flips in cingular's selection.

If you just want a good all around phone it's a toss up.

i personally prefer the flip over the S710's thing it uses, and i really dont like SE but that's all personal preference.

Posted by: ron808

I will have to get the S710 for functionality.

the razr's just too common & there's not much into it except it's thiness.

Posted by: curveball692

For what its worth, I started with the S710a, and am getting the V3 black. My biggest problem with the S710a is reception. I am on the fringe of coverage in my house, and the V3 just works that much better. Example, with 1 bar showing on each phone, I can make good calls with a V3, but on the s710a people say that I am breaking up badly. Also, I am on the fringe of a EDGE/non-EDGE market, so this seems to confuse the s710a enough that I can not access medianet at home on the s710a, but with a v3 it pops right up.

Havent decided yet if I will sell the s710a though, because it is cool, and in strong reception areas it works great, but it is thick!

Yeah, thats what I was thinking...Theres no real strongpoint that seperates the Razr from other Bluetooth Capable Moto Phones other than its size..and anyway, the phone is very wide and long...

So, as of now, I am 80 percent favoring the SE, and 20 the Razr...and the bad news, I may have to wait past tomorrow to get the phone...maybe even a month more...As of now I am in a family plan with TMobile and Im not sure the other members want to switch over along with me

Posted by: FrstdOne

I have both the Razr and s710a. The s710a is a lot more phone and a lot more fun to play with. The s710a takes better pictures, video, and has better games. It's just a much more 'feature rich' phone. I also find the voice quality better regardless of which end of the phone I'm on. The Razr, however, is the top performer when it comes to RF and hackability - it's also a true world phone since it's quad band. My suggestion is to try them both - I think you have a 30 day trial period - better check with the Cingular employees on this site for confirmation though.

Wirelessly posted (SonyEricssonS710a/R1A SEMC-Browser/4.0.3 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

I have the s710a.for the most part i enjoy the phone.i know the first shipment of s710's had the laggy os and a few other issues that were all fixed in later shipments.the only big issuei have with the phone is its a pain when u text alot.the v3 IS nothing more then a beautiful v400
.the s710 is an all around better phone IMO

Posted by: ThaIRS

I have the s710a, and my brother has the black v3. We've had our phones for a little over 2 1/2 weeks now, and I must say, the s710a is a better overall phone. I mean, it's the best phone I've ever owned. The v3 has awesome reception from my usage of the phone, but isn't as feature rich as the s710. I'd say, for a good phone with great reception, get the v3. For an all-around phone with strong features and great reception, get the s710.

S710a:
1.3mp digi-cam
class 10 EDGE
bluetooth
262k display(best I've eveer seen)
expandeable memory(even though only 128mb duo)
swivel design is eye catcher(wow factor)
Good recep

v3:
Super thin and lightweight
Good recep
bluetooth
262k display (not as good as s710)
Wow factor

Posted by: Spongey817

As it now stands, I am deffinetely getting the S710 unless I go to the Cingular store and find is unconfortably large (i highly doubt this will happen)

However, As I orginally thought Id be getting my S710 tomorrow, it may have to wait as long as a month

ok devori ....no offense.... your an idiot....i had the same issue before i got the s710a, i was deciding between the s710a and the razr.....i didnt really get a hands-on experience before i got the phone.....but i dont regret any part of it......after i got my phone a month later my friend got his t-mobile razr......tried it out.......SUCKS!! speakers are way below the s710a, screen was a bit smaller....the screen on the s710a was so much more clear and amazing camera for a phone.......and i like how you have to hold it like a normal camera.....so much more features and even if you only have 128 upgradable memory......the razr has 5.5!! wtf is that? you put about 2 songs? and to get 2 songs to fit in 5.5mb you have to have them at like 64KBPS?! and the picture size?! 640x320...!! what?! thats like 4.2 x 2.1 inches.....SMALL!! compared to the s710a's max 1280x960 (8.5 x 6.4 inches) idk if reading this helps anyone else in the future about the 2 phones but ......i surely dont regret it....

P.S. i bet you that the razr will break so easily.....you have it in your pocket....opps you fall....crack...!!

Posted by: SonyStyle

get the Nokia 8801.

Posted by: linuXshock

since i might be going back to Cingular soon ( in about a month or so) im thinking about getting the s710 instead of the V3. I like the MP camera and bigger memory on the s710, the only thing that i like about the v3 is the size.

Posted by: triple5soul8781

id pick an s710 over a razr just feature wise for the price.

Posted by: linuXshock

yeah i know

Posted by: Spongey817

Well, its been a week since i visited the Cingular Store and purchased my new phone

I ended up buying the Razr...i had a choice, the black Razr V3 for 100 bucks OR the S710a for 300...so, i figured for a hundred bucks, i might as well try it

And im happy i did....i couldnt be more happy with the razr...for all the ppl who are saying crap about the memory, the no features, and how the camera is better on the S710a....well guess what, its a cell phone, not a multimedia mainframe

And the Razr fits the perfect cell phone description...all around, its great...no, i dont need to fit 100 songs on my phone...why? because its a phone, and i already have an ipod...no, i dont need to get perfect resolution on my phone..why? because its a phone, and i already have a mp camera..

The Razr does all the things it should, plus extras that you are happy to get, if you arent a cell phone professional and arent expecting

Plus, ive had the phone a week, and id say at leat 30-40 people that i dont know have come up to me..."is that the new razr?"

regarding "its a cell phone crap"......whats technology for, one thing thats good.....make things all in one....so you dont need to carry your ipod, cellphone, psp, and camera all together. why not just get a cellphone that plays games, listens to music, plays mp4 and better camera?! ALL-IN-ONE!!

basically the razr doesnt do s**t.....camera....sucks......songs?! fit 2?

next the "oh d**bf**ks come up to you and go is that the new razr....." they are idiots....they have never seen real technology. and they just amazed by the size....but if they have actually used it, its useless s**t

Posted by: bahula03

things the razr has going for it;
-quad band/much better reception
-size

yes, the razr works OK as a basic phone. The OS is terrible, the phonebook makes me want to shoot myself (and I only have 130 or so contacts), and the text messaging is very slow. The only thing holding me back from buying an 710 is the thickness (which is comparable to my old mpx200)...I used my mpx a bit yesterday and it's very annoying to have in-pocket after using the razr for so long. My $.02

Posted by: crazyassazn

but i mean it depends what age you are......cuz im only 16 but i hate carrying it my pockets so i just carry my car keys and phone in the hand.... and only thing i really have in pockets are wallet in the back and some change? so thickness doesnt really matter.....unless i mean its a phone thats like 2in. thick

edit....
age thing :-/ i dont mean to offend anyone, i mean its just too much s**t in the pockets to be having puts too much weight on the pants and is uncomfortable.....but im just sayin like bahula "my 2cents."

when my friend got the Razr when it just came out ..he paid like $500 and when i took a look at it, it kinda reminded me of v600, at least the software that runs the phone

yeah the OS is almost the same as the v600...and isnt a problem for me

So whoever said all the crap about having a device all in one...i dont need it...this a cell phone forum, cell phones are used to MAKE CALLS...and thats exactly what the Razr does, and its the BEST CELL PHONE TO DATE to do so, end of discussion about that.

Now, you keep repeating 2 songs this, 2 songs that...i dont need to put songs on my phone, so you can argue all you want about that, but your not getting anywhere with it, because honestly, i dont give a sh*t...=]

haha, i think you'd have to be a new razr owner to believe stuff like that....

hehe, ^ good one

Posted by: PaisanNYC

I was a Razr owner for several months, and was so glad when I got rid of it. Reception was horrible on it, the earpiece was so low, even tweaking the seem edits didnt help, and the screen was poorly made. I work outdoors, and on a regular clear day, i couldnt even see the screen to look at my phonebook!
The s710a is MUCH better in regards to just its cell phone features. The earpiece is nice, loud and crisp. The screen is so much more clear and can actually be seen outdoors, and the speakerphone is so much clearer as well.

You must really have had a dud of a Razr then. The RF on a Razr is better than the S710a without a doubt and the earpiece volume is plenty loud expecially after seem editing it.

Posted by: Avironeur

Before seem editing it I found it horrible however and let's face it, most people don't want to be bothered with seem edits...my v635 was far far louder and far more usable than my RAZR out of the box

Posted by: carsmovies

Actually the Euro edition black V3 I just picked up had very loud earpiece right out of the box so I think moto had already increased the volumes in their latest firmware.

Posted by: zmarius

I've a cingular branded razr, after updating the firmware and doing some seem edits, i've enabled video recording, increased my free space from 5.5mb to about 9mb, there's others who've increased available space to 10+mb's, I also own a S710A and it is a great phone, but for my job, it's too big and in risk of being damaged, plus, the motorola's are a lot more tweakable. I have an ipod, and I have no time to listen to music much less do much w/ my job anyway, basically I just wanted a tiny phone w/ bluetooth and quadband, and I've got it.

Posted by: Pusha910

OK right now the only good argument that is in favor of V3 is BS. Phones are used for calling people, **** all the other features?

LOL It's the year 2005. Later in life I don't expect to carry around a camera, mp3 player, phone, and a gameboy.

Anyway, I don't think it's right to compare RAZR to S710a. I mean, I do believe no one should say the RAZR is better than S710a because it is not, no matter how you put it. The RAZR is a good phone, if you're someone that wants a phone so that can chat with friends alot, grab a RAZR. If you are a gadget freak (that's not meant to be offensive), and want a full featured phone grab a S710a.

first off my age has nothing to do with it...second i didnt say size....i said they thought it was nice because they dont know what the phone is really capable or in the razrs case not capable of, and you think the razr is better just because what? its thin?...which makes them idiots because they dont go and see how the phone really is before they think its all nice and what not. second....if you think the razr suits your "adult lifestyle" then fine pick it..my 2 cents is just saying the rarz SUCKS

and the s710a maybe a bit thicker and you dont use some of the features .....atleast its still nice to have it around if you have a situation where theres nothing to do, or you need to take a picture of a traffic accident, listen to music on the train or bus or if you have the urge to listen to music

edit:
and so regarding pusha910's ....its 2005..... COMPLETELY CORRECT

and again and again if its just a cellphone for making calls then y do all these companies make all the new phones with a lot more features.......i bet you within the next 5 years.....all NEW cellphones will come standard with all this stuff and probably not even be just a stand alone cellphone ....whats the point of carrying around 10 different things.........

and like right now......... cellphones are already out with pdas, media players, cameras, entertainment........etc why do they put all these things in one?! hmm i would think because we are trying to evolve our technology to a new level so we can just carry ONE piece of "equipment" instead of having to carry a mp camera, pda, i pod, creative media player, psp, and last but not least A CELLPHONE

and by 5 years i mean is if we still use cellphones and where the phone its just not attached to our fingers :-D

Posted by: Devori

to sum up, your argument is mute, and one sided. your age is a huge factor, mainly because those that lack intelligence and life experience will actually attempt to hold both these phones in a similar catagory. if it works for you, god bless. i found that i spent way too much money for a device which had features that i did not have the time to use. all i need is a phone, which is why i went with the v3. we cant slam one another because we have different tastes or needs.

Posted by: PRStateOfMind

Oh boy here we go again. The overrated, overhyped and overpriced RAZR. Pure garbage from Motorola. A V600 in disguise. Why don't people get it???? Lets face it, people are buying this POS phone because everyone else has one. Just like the overrated, overhyped and overpriced iPod. Another POS from Apple everybody has. Creative and iRiver are so much better.

It's funny cause I'm selling my S710a at the moment cause I want to get a 6682. I miss Symbian. But anyway, one guy offered me his black RAZR as a trade! LMAO. Goes to show you the so-called "wow" factor wares off pretty quickly

The only good thing about the RAZR is that at least Cingular came to their senses and lowered the price. But it's still not worth it especially when you can get a REAL phone like the S710a for the same price. It's a no brainer here. IMO, the RAZR should have been $149 instead of $199.

The CDMA RAZR is at least gonna be worth it. Megapixel, EVDO, video, etc. I wonder how much Verizon plans to charge for that though. Should be interesting.

this thread is getting out of hand, too much BS here. It should get locked

Posted by: SonyStyle

It comes down to the simple truth. the Razr is equivalent to the Startac. Its a small phone with low to middle end features.

The s710a is amultimedia phone, thicker, but way better camera and expandable memory.....

they arent comparable.

Lock the thread please.

This post says it all, nothing more to argue about, the Razr is a phone you would buy if you want something compact, something you can take all over the world, a phone that is bluetooth enabled, and has a list of features that can be considered amazing to a basic cell phone owner...

I think you are all forgetting that not everyone in the world is a cell phone guru, and not everyone is asking for their next cell phone to be their savior...

make this the second time

Cell phone reception is 80 percent from cingular, 20 percent from the phone

There was a time this week in which me and two of my friends stood both inside a building and outside that same building...

LG: 3 Bars of Service
Nokia: 4 Bars
Motorola: 4 Bars

All with cingular

and this is the second time ive done this test...the other was with TMobile, and i got the same results...

So, Mr. Iknoweverythingaboutcellphones...your wrong

Is the S710a easily unlocked with the terminator dongle?
How about the new firmware? Is there an unbranded one available?

I am getting bored of Motorola phones and I might just get a S710a if it can be unlocked and unbranded easily.

slowpoke ss..idk i just got mine done at the dealer.....it wasnt an official cingular store....you can call it as an authorized agent? if i mean the place you go to has ppl that will unlock it for you you can do it there....cuz the cingular store wont i would believe so

Indeed it does.

I bought the RAZR the first day it came out for like $500 from a Cingular employee that won it during one of their company "learn-to-earn" promos.

anyways, I had the phone for about three days and I then came to my senses and I asked myself: dude, you paid 500 bones for this phone???

not 24 hours later I sold the phone for almost $600 on ebay. lol -

haha i must admitt when the razr first came out i was very ANTI 500$ phone...but now that its somewhat reasonable price its ok. It does look nice but if you want features no doubt a s710 is better

Which is better? A Mustang V8 Cobra or a Hummer3? If you want to race with a Hummer you're going to have you tail handed to you. If you want to go cross country, a Mustang is not going to fit the bill. It all comes down to what YOU want/need. My wife only makes calls and occasionally sends a text or mms message. And that's it. It would be a bit silly for her to carry around a phone that it much larger and heaver if she is not going to use the additional features. On the other hand, I make calls, use the PIM features, access the internet, check email, listen to audiobooks, watch videos, listen to music, etc, so I carry a phone with those features. The SE and Moto are both nice phones, but meet different wants/needs. Any talk of which is better past that is meaningless unless you have first identified the expectations of the user.

haha... I love it when people say things like that.

some people act like the S710a is this HUGE, 5 pound brick compared to the RAZR phone which in some peoples' eyes is this microscopic piece of electronic hardware that can go undetected to the average human eye. ----> oh please...

I will admit that the S710a surely isnt no slim line phone but come on, it isnt as big and bulky as some people would make it out to be.

Actually, my post was general commentary on features vs. size, and I did not specifically reference the S710a, but....
Of the 17, non-pda phones offered by Cingular, the S710a is the heaviest at 4.8 ounces. It is also tied with the V551 (a flip phone) as the thickest at 1". Bottom line: people aren't "acting" like it's a big, heavy phone. It is a big, heavy phone. Now, some people are OK with that because it is feature rich and the size is a fair compromise in their minds, which was my original point: each person will have different expectations and preferences.
