Thinking about spray painting the SKII

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I think it would look good in black, the question is, what kind of spray paint do I use for this task?

Paint is not good for electronics, even after it has dried.

Doesn't sound like a good idea to me either. I would warn you not to do that as you may end up destroying your SKII.

i would reccomend takin it apart and taking it to a car body shop and have them paint it with automotive paint.

Posted by: dasupaman23

I second that. And I think you should take pictures of the process in case I want to take mine apart?

I dont see spray paint working, I have seen car paint and seen it look good with some ppl I know @ a body shop

I'll post pics of my custom SK2 shortly... I'm also working on an aluminium case to replace the original... the prototype is almost done and then I'll be submitting to T-Mobile to get approved as an authorized accessory so as to not void the warranty.

Never tryed with a sidekick but did try with a gameboy sp before and I would have to advise aginst doing this. I used regular spray paint and after it dryed, it felt horribile and the paint smuged on my fingers and I wish I hadn't did it. The idea about taking it to an auto shop and getting it painted sounds good and I think the sidekick would look bad a$$ in black. If you do get it painted and it works out for you. Could you post what you did and maby post some pics. Good luck with it.

I would take the phone apart, wet sand it to a smooth finish and get all the silver paint off it, Then i'd use a krylon fusion paint (Its for plastics, no primer needed, they say you dont have to sand, but i would sand it)

to answer your question, you'll need Krylon Fusion, its both a dye and a paint optimized for plastics

car paint will eventually peel and crack, Krylon Fusion will chemically bond to the Plastic too

Now there's something I'd pay big bucks for. That'd be cool!

Just thought I'd share my painting experience for my SK2. Tamiya black metallic for plastics on the SK2 with clear coats (didn't wet sand though) was a no go for me.

It looks sweet for about a week before I started taking it in and out of it's belt pouch. The edges that get rubbed against in the pouch wore away the paint and it looks like crap now.

I tried the following:

Took it completely apart.

Sanded it down with medium/fine grit sanding sponge. It seems rough enough for paint, not too smooth, not too rough.

Cleaned it and dried it thoroughly after sanding

I did 2 thin coats of black primer (all purpose model type spray paint)

3 thin coats of Tamiya color metallic black for plastics

2 thin clear coats of Tamiya color clear coat for plastics

I waited between 15 to 25 minues per coat. Again, I didn't wet sand any coats.

I might try some Krylon as suggested. I'm a little pissed that I spent like 6 hours painting my SK2 and it looks like crap after 2 weeks of use. I still refuse to pay 400 bucks for a stupid black SK2. A black shell isn't worth another 150 bucks.

ice next time wait like 5 hours in between each coat a proper paint job takes about 3 days to dry properly.

and make sure the primer is optimized for plastics too.

or dont use primer at all (as per krylon fusion's instructions)
