has anybody connected to a mac using bluetooth through bitpim? i have been trying for a little while and cannot possibly get it to work. i have searched the web quite a bit and nobody has written a proper tutorial about using bitpim with a mac. the mac i am using doesn't say it even has a connection to my phone. the people who make bitpim also need some serious help in the tutorial department, with almost no information about macs. help would be greatly appreciated. (i'm using bitpim 0.7.34)

Posted by: rcfuzz

Can't do it with BT. Spend 5-6 bucks on eBay and get an USB cable for the 8100 or even the 8000. Bitpim on the Mac works great with a cable hooked up to the 8100.

alright, thanks. thats what i was planning on doing originally.

Bluetooth will work with the VX8100 on a Mac. I am using a Powerbook running OS X v10.4.2 with built-in bluetooth and it works fine. I will try to explain the steps needed to connect.

1) Make sure bluetooth is turned on in both the phone and the Mac
2) Go to the visibility settings of the phone and select "Shown to all"
3) Click the Bluetooth icon on your toolbar across on the top of the screen of your Mac and select "Set up Bluetooth Device" from the menu that pops up.
4) Bluetooth Setup Assistant will open
5) Select "Mobile Phone" and click Continue
6) The name of your phone should show up in the list of phones
7) Click continue
8) Your phone will ask you something about letting your Mac connect. Select yes or continue. I can't remember which.
9) Your Mac will display a passkey. Enter this number into the space provided on your phone and select OK. Your phone and Mac are now connected and able to talk to each other.
10) Your Mac will now ask you what services you want to be able to use. Uncheck all option and select Continue. Internet access might with the Mac software, but I haven't tried yet. You're on your own with this.
11) A message will tell you that your device has been set up succesfully. Select Quit.
12) Open BitPim. I am using version 0.7.34
13) Click BitPim from the toolbar and select "Preferences" from the toolbar that drops down.
14) Click "Browse" to the right of Com Port
15) A list of available ports will be displayed. Hightlight your phone and click OK. Mine looks like the following: Serial (/dev/cu.jeffphone-BluetoothSe-1) I have my phone named "jeff phone"
16) Select VX8000 as the phone type and click OK on the BitPim settings page
17) Click "View" from the toolbar and select "View Filesystem" from the toolbar that drops down
18) The window should show the following: >/ (the ">" represents an arrow) Click on the arrow to view the filesystem.
19) Your on your own from here. Read some other postings for info on what to do once you're here.

Note: Error message sometimes popup when you are trying to connect. Simply try again and it will usually work.

I usually have to follow steps 2 thru 16 every time I want to connect after my laptop has been rebooted

Do not hold me responsable for anything you might screw up on your phone. It's not my fault. This is just what has worked for me.

Posted by: RoboticHobo24

wow thanks a lot for the tutorial, i'll see if it works.

Posted by: RoboticHobo24

ok, i'm starting to get pissed now, i am not familiar with macs so i don't know the keyboard shortcuts. i am trying to add a ringtone to the phone and need to delete the "my_ringtone.dat" file from the filesystem. what the hell is the shortcut to delete things on a mac? i press the key labeled delete and it takes me to the top of the file tree (dload), i have also tried cmd+delete and that didn't work either. little help?

Posted by: jeffj44646

Hold the "ctrl" key on the keyboard while clicking on the file you want to delete. A menu will pop up with options. It is kinda like right clicking with Windows. I think this will get you what you want.

Jeff

Posted by: Kolisar

Jeffj44646 is correct. Hold down the control key and click, that will bring up a context menu that will allow you to delete the file. To copy the file you will need to control-click the directory, select new on the context menu and then select the file from the file open dialog that will appear. Drag and Drop will not work.

You may also receive some strange errors saying that some other bluetooth device is using the phone while copying the files and the file will not copy. Just try again, eventually it will work.

If it matters I am working from a powerbook with built-in bluetooth and 10.4.2. I have successfully downloaded a few ringtones via BitPim and Bluetooth so if you have any problems PM me and I would be glad to help work you through them.

qirex,

It looks as if you don't have your phone properly setup in BitPim. In the first line of the error message you posted the device BitPim is trying to connect to is listed (/dev/cu.Bluetooth-PDA-Sync). This is a default port that is setup in OS X for syncing PDAs. The device path for your phone should contain something resembling what you named your phone. Try going to the preferences in BitPim and fixing the Com Port setting.

Posted by: jeffj44646

In my original post on how to connect to a Mac using Bluetooth I mentioned that I had to follow all of the steps every time I wanted to connect. I was wrong. Once a phone is setup, you only have to go to the Bluetooth menu in your phone and view the paired devices. Your computer's name should be listed, with "port disabled" below it. Highlight your computers name, and press the left softkey to "Set Port". Hightlight and press "OK". Your phone will connect and will be ready to work with BitPim.

Hi
I am also trying to set up with MAC. I get the same type of exception error as noted before. BUT mine says LG4400 thru out the message even though I have set it to LG8000 etc. ????? What do I do with this message? I have looked and redone everything multiple times and still can't get it to recognize the phone. It is funny because I can get it to rec the phone when I log onto Verizon's web site back up assistant-- weird.

I appreciate all of the assistance you have offered thus far and if you have a moment and wouldn't mind I would appreciate your guidance here as well. Thanks so much!!

The bluetooth/bitpim combination only works if you select the "other CDMA" as the phone type and only use the file system viewer. I read elsewhere on this site that there is a copy of bitpim that supports the 8100 but the kit is only for windows right now so, when the officially release the next version, there will be a mac kit.

Will this take care of the issue of the Mac not seeing the appropriate port? Thanks.

Qirex,

I was having your same problem, but I fixed it by going to the Bluetooth Serial Utility(~/Applications/Utilities/) selecting New, and setting up a Bluetooth port for a mobile phone. Once I did that, it showed up in BitPim just fine, and I've been able to use it with no problems. Hope this helps.

Hi everyone,
I'm on a G5 Duel 1.8GHz, Running Tiger 10.4.2 and have a D-link USB Bluetooth adapter. I've followed the step by step guide to setting up my VX8100 with bluetooth and BitPim and I have gotten to the point of seeing my phones Directories in the "Filesystem" tab of BitPim. Now Im stuck, I cant see any of my Pixs, Flix or Sounds in the visible directories. I did find where I thought they would be under Filesystem which was the mmc1 directory under my_flix or my_pix or even my_sounds. Am I doing something wrong still?? I did try to go to the menu bar on BitPim and select Data/Get Phone Data but half way threw it gave me "An unexpected exception has occurred." Here is the full error message.

An unexpected exception has occurred.

I'm sure I've set it up correctly, even the BitPim window at the bottom right has me listed as LG-VX8000 with the name of my phone next to it.
If someone could help me here or guide me to a site that has more info on using the Filesystem Directories I'd be very appreciative. Or if maybe some how I screwed up on the set up I sure could use some help.
Thanks again, Steve

Posted by: RABBITintheMOON

hi again,
Sorry looks like I spoke to soon. Seems after playin with Data/get phone data over and over again the files finally appeared. All except for ringtones. Oh and it seems I cant upload to the phone. I can add images to the wallpaper Directory in BitPim but it won't update the phone. Been trying Data/send phone data but no luck so far.
Oh and One last thing, I found that if I try to delete a wallpaper image in BitPim it leaves a generic icon image in my Pix folder on my phone that I cant delete.
Still if anyone has any info on how to use Filesystem give a post. Is everyone get alot of errors with BitPim?

steve

Posted by: jeffj44646

Refer to this post on how to use the ringers you have sent to your phone: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=686076

I believe the author is working with the Windows version of BitPim, but once you are viewing the directory tree everything is pretty much the same. There are a few files you will have to delete that manage the ringer files on your phone, and then reboot your phone. I think you will lose any settings you have for special ringers used for particular numbers in your phonebook.

Hope this helps,
Jeff

hi, i have been able to successful connect to by 8100 using a ibook G4, bluetooth and bitpim. In order to use DUN I have modified the nvm_data file as prescribed in some other posts. However, using bitpim I am unable to replace the nvm_data file on my phone with the new one that I have modified. bitpim will not replace that file. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I have the same issue, there been a fix yet?

Posted by: recee2k3

citadel have you tried to remove the file and then add a new file. Also make sure in settings you do not have read only selected. It is a check box on bitpim that says do not allow writing to this device.

actually you can use bluetooth, you just have to set comports inside windows XP's built in bluetooth configuration program. Set your phone connection to say com4, then open bit pim and connect to the phone on com 4, simple.
