outlook sync

Outlook it only syncs when its connected to the datacable right? If its not connected to a datacable then it wont sync right and eveyrthing will be fine right, it uses text messages not data to send out right?
Is there a way to hook up activesync w/ bluetooth instead of data, as well as like looking into the smartphone directories etc.
