SX66 Standardization Project

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello everyone,

So, how many of you are using the SX66?? Did you know that the SX66 is the U.S. variant of a phone released worldwide by a company called HTC? HTC's code name for this phone is Blue Angel. Did you know that the current System ROM version for the Blue Angel is 1.40.00. What version are you running?? Siemens latest, and only update will take you to version 1.33.10. Did you know that there are serveral Radio ROM upgrades that HTC has made available, yet Siemens has only released the oldest version? And did you know that there have been serveral upgrades to the applications that HTC includes with this phone, again the Siemens is not interested in providing to the users of the SX66?? Did you know that Cingular has started to SIM lock these phones?

The SX66 Standardization Project was designed to help end users of the SX66 to get their (pretty darn expensive) phone upgraded to the latest versions available from HTC. Working with people worldwide, we get the latest versions of the software, and "cook" it to be usable on the SX66. Have I gotten your attention?? Well, here is the kicker, we provide these files, and instructions free of charge. We even have the SIM unlocking application that was created at XDA-developers.com.

If you are interested, check out The SX66 Standardization Project

My email is available on that site, or you can contact me here with questions.

Chris

Thanks alot for your help and appreciate you taking the time to compile everything in an easy to use site. I just need some additional information and hope you dont mind takign the time to answer them

- What is the benefit of upgrading to ver. 1.4, I couldnt see any release notes for the upgrade
- Also it states that its a Dutch version, does that mean it will be a localized version or English version

Thanks a lot for your help

Stormy,

The 1.40.00 System ROM was released with the 1.12.00 Radio ROM. Below is the note from the Imate site, that details the fixes in these two ROMs:

* Upgrade from Microsoft AKU 1 to AKU 2.6 for Windows Mobile 2003SE
o Includes upgrade from Windows Media Player 9 to Windows Media Player 10 Mobile
* Widcomm Bluetooth update
* Updated MMS, CallerID Camera, Album and MIDI Manager
* Driver modification:
o Solutions of white screen issue
o Bluetooth DUN failed issue has been fixed
o Screen toggle of WMP will work properly with QWERTY keyboard
o Audio output has been improved so that music playing will no longer stop after power off/on
* W-LAN Upgrade:
o The string of "TX Rate" value in W-LANMgr when coexistence enabled has been modified from "2M" to "11M"
o W-LAN will auto turn on after device power on/off cycle
o W-LAN Manager will show empty data when W-LAN disconnects with Access-Point
o Improved W-LAN at ELP mode
o W-LAN Manager will show the right SSID value if repeatedly changing AP's SSID value
o W-LAN will reconnect back to AP while device is timeout off at non-signal place and then power on
o WPA dynamic roaming works successfully
o LEAP to other network connection is now working properly
o Enhanced the system ability when stressing power on/off device with W-LAN on

Since the 1.40.00 system was released, a new Radio ROM (1.13.00) has become available.

The extended ROM available is the collection of all the latest registry settings, and HTC application updates as the apply to the SX66. The goal of the standardization project is not only to provide the lastest System and Radio ROMs, but also to provide a highly tuned extended ROM that provides latest HTC applications, and patches to create the most stable and functional PDA Phone.

As for the Dutch version, all the ROMs are the World Wide Editions, which means there are in english. The country designation is only to indentify the distribution from which the ROM came from. The european carriers are much better at releasing updates for the Blue Angel then their US counterparts, so you will almost always see newer stuff available from "across the pond".

I'm using the standardized 1.40.00 ROM with EXT ROM 1.40.124 (modified to remove a few items I never use, and I added a few that I do), and I've been extremely happy with it. The Bluetooth and wifi seems a lot more reliable, and the upgrade to WM 10 is nice. I would recommend the upgrade for anyone with an SX66 (that siemens ROM is crap). Now if only I could get Windows Mobile 5...

I need someone to use the getDevicedata in the Ext ROM Program that is on Cingular and send me the Information

I need to know the rest of this

Op ID for Cingular is XGULA001. If you have the AT&T variant the Op
ID is XGULB001

Fluid hosts.com just tried to add itself as a security cert so that it could download spyware (probably) and viruses to my computer!

of course i blocked it because i use firefox but you people shoudl really be aware that this fluidhosts.com is trying to access your computer. at least as far as trying to install a security cert which would give them a key to do whatever they wanted to your system.

if you viewed this thread you may already be infected.

Posted by: BrianSkibinski

Perhaps you should look into it a little bit more ebfore you fly off on a tangent....

The reason for th security cert is because SOMEONE (*cough DSSTech) decided to use a secure image for their signature...the URL is: https://www.fluidhosts.com/banners/...anner468x60.gif

So you need the certificate to be able to view the image... that's all. Sorry, no conspiracy theories or fun invasion of privacy, just an image with a secure URL.

That said, please DSSTech remove the **** image!

Dsstech,
That is a very generous offer, however my current setup really works for me right now. And bysides, I finally got the URL listed in Google.

But if I run into bandwidth issues, I'll give you a shout!

Thank you for putting him in his place.

Chris,

My offer is ALWAYS open to you. I own my own Datacenter and i dont mind helping you out.

ALSO

My cell Phone sometimes cant connect to GPRS. I have to reboot the phone for it to work. Very wierd. I have copied the old GPRS and Medianet Cabs over to the phone and installed them. I will let you know what i find out.

Posted by: Dsstech

CHris,

Ok here is the Problem. after a while GPRS will not connect anymore. It says that it can't dial it it is not a Cingular problem. If i turn the phone into Flight mode and then back GPRS will connect. If I cycle the phone it works. Just seems after a while of being on. It just doesnt want to connect anymore GPRS. Any ideas. I am Using your FIrmware and the Beta Ext Rom you have on your site.

The problem you are experiencing happens when you are connected via GPRS, and you get disconnected because of loss of signal. The problem is at the OS level, and a lot of people, including myself are looking for a fix. Current work around is the Radio Reset app in the ExtROM tools folder. One click off, one click on, and you're good to go.

I've got a slight problem.

I've upgraded my SX66 to the latest ROMs, including the Extended one. After I did all that, I restored my apps etc. with xBackup and now some upgraded items have disappeared, things like magic button, band selection, the blue angel today screen theme, etc, even the media player 10 skin (there is now NO THEME on windows media at all). How can I get this stuff back without reflashing, therefore wiping out all my old apps/settings etc?

Edit: I'd also like to add that all ringtones dissapeared also, except for Windows Default and Cingular.

The problem is restoring the apps over wrote major portions of registry. It is never a good idea to restore your application with any type of back program when doing an update of this type. Data is not a problem, but best case is always to reload the applications.

So how to solve your problem? Unlock and unhide your extended rom folder, then disable the radio with the radio reset app. Then go through the extended rom folder, executing each cab, one at a time. Prefferably in the order they are listed in the config.txt file. This is a bit time consuming, and I can't vouch for how well it will work. But it is a solution that doesn't require a hard reset.

Of course the best solution is a hard reset, reinstall your applications, and restore your data.

Chris,

I have changed the EXT Rom back to the .124 not the .125Beta. This is what i see. After a while it will not connect to GPRS Anymore. I would have to reset the Flight Mode or Power reset the device. I am thinking it is a Problem with your EXT Rom or Main ROM. Could you look into this. I have ActiveSync that runs every 20 minutes to connect to my Corp Mail and downloads it. I cant keep on Reseting the Device 20 times a day. I have even tried leaving it connected but after like an hour it disconnects or loses sync. I have used the old Medianet and GPRS Cab from my Old EXT Rom and it made no Diffrence. Anyways let me know

Posted by: Dsstech

Chris,

You around man. Just wanted to check on that fix for GPRS. I am going to 1.40.00 and 1.12 Radio and the Beta2 EXT Rom to see if it still does it

Posted by: cdaly1970

DssTech,
As you have already found, the GPRS problem seems to be generated from the Caller ID app. Strange indeed, but I have rolled my Caller ID back to the version in the thread suggested on XDA-Developers to see if it improves the issue. However, this was never a big problem for me, as it only happened once and a while on my unit. Since you are the person I know that is experiencing it the most, let me know if this fixes, or at least improves the problem. If this is truely the case, I think we can identify it as a level 1 bug for the .125 Extended ROM, and release a Beta 3.

-Chris

Posted by: BrianSkibinski

That's been a problem with the main System ROM and OS since the phone came out. I've seen a few roms that real with it better than others, but I suspect that's it's also very dependant on what other apps are running and what they'er attempting to do with the radio. As chris has stated, it's the caller ID app that seems to cause most the problems.

I haven't had a problem with GPRS (WiFi is another point, but GPRS has been stable for me on ROM 1.40.00, ExtRom .124 [custom modified from standardization project - I removed a few items that I don't ever use] and Radio 1.13).

Posted by: cdaly1970

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to taken a moment to let you all know that I have put the final touches on the 1.40.125 Extended ROM this AM, and it is now currently available from the SX66 Standardization Project website. This release has been a major milestone, as I am now including applications from 3rd party developers (with their permission), along with all the latest fixes, and tweaks. Thanks to the help of everyone that beta tested this release, as it is the most stable version I've ever seen. Most noteably, the GPRS not reconnecting issue has been resolved, and now GPRS works like a charm. Another major change is that with this version, the Extended ROM is now available in two versions, Cingular and T-mobile. Each version is customized speifically for that network, including logos, ringtones, and all settings.

A lot of fixes went into this build, so I strongly suggest that if you are running an eariler version of the Extended ROM from the Standardization Project, upgrade it now.

Quite often, actually. Granted I'm usually at about 3, but I do get 5 near my work downtown (Milwaukee, WI). Hell I even get 5 inside my work building (on floor 3 of 7, middle of the floor).

ok about the Assign custom ringtones. It doesnt work. Anything on this

That I can't help you with... I've never tried it. Anyone else?

Two questions, first, what format are the ringtones you are using??

And second, does the caller ID work at all?? IE, if you have a pic and a ringtone assigned, do you get the pic, but not the ringtone??

I noticed that the voice recorder that came with my Cingular-branded SX66 has disappeared after applying the updates. How can I get it back?

Posted by: Fresh-Popcorn

The voice recorder is still there on mine.
open up "notes" and on the bottom click on the recorder symbol.

Also in your buttons settings you should have your recorder set to the button on the left on top of your volume slider.

Posted by: bparker05

The button was set to "Record" which apparently doesn't exist anymore. I set it to Notes and that solves it. Just an extra step (you have to click the tape now), but oh well.

Chris,

Installed latest System, Radio and extended ROMS. Thanks for the updates.
A few notes and questions:

1) Any way to remove the "camera" app? the SX-66 has no camera.
2) What happened to all of the ringtones that normally came with the phone?
3) Any way to get the date/time that shows on the navigation bar back to the "old" format, i.e. no date, just time?
4) The SIM Tool Kit app appears to do nothing except "hang" on my phone. Wont come up fully, and Magic Button has problems closing it
5) The connection indicator (GPRS, wireless, direct, etc) always appears on the nav bar even when not connected. Any way to get it to show ONLY when some net connection is made?
6) Any way to get a description of each of the CAB files in the Ext ROM?
7) Any way to restore the Cingular boot screens?

Thanks
Andy

I beleive he said this would be fixed in the next version.

2) What happened to all of the ringtones that normally came with the phone?

I think these are in the CingularCustomizations cab that was not included in the release (or was it). You should be able to d/l it from XDA-dev

3) Any way to get the date/time that shows on the navigation bar back to the "old" format, i.e. no date, just time?

There is a registry setting for this, again see XDA-dev since I can't remember what it is.

4) The SIM Tool Kit app appears to do nothing except "hang" on my phone. Wont come up fully, and Magic Button has problems closing it

That's because Cingular doesn't use any SIM applications. Mine just displays an error though, it doesn't crash the phone.

5) The connection indicator (GPRS, wireless, direct, etc) always appears on the nav bar even when not connected. Any way to get it to show ONLY when some net connection is made?

Possibly, a good question for cdaly. I kinda like it up there cause it reminds me that Ive got wifi running when I'm in another app and don't have the lower status bar of the today screen.

6) Any way to get a description of each of the CAB files in the Ext ROM?

I'll let cdaly work that one out for you, I'm short on time.

7) Any way to restore the Cingular boot screens?

see XDA-dev for a thread called "Changing your MDA Boot screen" or something along that line. It allows you to replace it with any images and worked wonderfully on my sx66.

with the add ringtones.. i have found that you have to add the files(mp3,wav) under the windows:rings folder then the appear in your rings list..

Chris, i will update the ext rom tonight. did you ever fix the bandcab yet?? i still have the old fix but need to know if i should apply it or not. also my ATT variant has been running dtrong for about 3 weeks with only resets for GPRS issues and the phone screen of death where every time i clsoe a screen it pops up my phone window..

also.. you guys get 5 bars??!! i just assumed that 4 was the max.. i have never seen 5 bars yet!!

alex

Posted by: BrianSkibinski

I apologize... I do only get 4 bars, and 4 is the max. I just kind of assumed 4 was the max and I noticed that it was full strength so I never really thought about it. It goes from 0 bars (the moving searching indicator) to 4 bars (one bar looks like a dot). I checked the manual to double check and it is only 4.

Hey Alex,

I have an AT&T variant as well (though I use Cingular and the phone is branded for Cingular). I want to update my phone to 1.40.xxx, but I am confused a little ...

Can I update using Chris' updates for the AT&T variant (ROM & Radio), then use the appropriate Cingular Ext ROM (ie. 1.40.125) --OR-- am I S.O.L. for an extended ROM since I have the AT&T variant?

In other words, do the Extended ROMs work for both the AT&T variant (XGULB001) and the Cingular version (XGULA001)?

Thanks in advance for your help! Can't wait to update.

The only thing you will loose is the automatic settings for your GPRS. They will be set to the Cingular Standard. It will still work on your phone.

Posted by: proteandigital

OK, so I use the ROM (1.40.00) and Radio(1.13.00) updates for the AT&T variant, then use the Cingular Extended ROM update found on the Extended ROM page?

Yes. The only difference is you might want to change the boot images, and you will have to configure all the GPRS settings manually whenever you hard-reset the phone. A small price to pay for this upgrade if you ask me, I'd do it anyway.

You can find info on changing the boot images at xda-developers.com

You could also remove the Cingular_Cust cab from startnig up, but that won't help you much, it just won't install cingular settings. Alternatively, you could make your own cab to program AT&T settings (if any of them are actually different) on hard-reset, but the fact that you're asking about the rom upgrade means creating your own cab is probably a lot more effort than it's worth to you.

anyone have the problem with you have to reboot the SX66 to get the BlueTooth to turn on. When i try to turn on the BlueTooth it says there is no move Driver Mem left and I have to soft reset to get it to turn on.

Nope, I don't have that problem. Although, my Plantronics Bluetooth Headset M2500 sounds really horrible in regards to audio quality. People have complained so much that I do not use it anymore.

Has anyone else had audio quality problems?

I had that problem for a while... I think I ended up doing a hard-reset and it worked fine. I think it might have been an issue with another program or possible even a cab in the ext_rom. Not sure what I did to fix it though... If I remember I'll let you know.

BT Audio Quality has long been known as an issue in the BA. I'd be interested to know if anyone with WM5 knows if that's improved at all?

I'm desperatly trying to set up wi-fi connection using to browse internet at work and at home. Keep in mind, I was successul on setting up the internet conn. on either one of the locations. However, at work, I should go and reconfigure all the ip address and DNS, and I never been able to download or connect to my data file. Wherever I go, try new setting I end up to deal with "modem" setting. A help on that it will be very appreciated!!

Posted by: JT4

I just did the updates last night. I thought everything was working fine until I tried connecting GPRS this morning. I get the bubble that indicates Cannot Connect. Dialed wap.cingular. The answering modem has disconnected. Check the modem settings.

I did check through the settings and they do appear to be correct. The only potential problem I see is the password location. It has more asteriks than you would need for CINGULAR1 (all caps). I retyped the password but it seems to always go back to the way it was before when I go back to it. Could this be the Caller ID program issue someone reported? If so, how do I correct that? Thanks.

UPDATE - It seems that my phone was not seeing GPRS at the time. Possibly the cell site had an issue. It is unusual at that was at home and I have not had a problem in the past. The GPRS indication is different than before and I did not realize that the small X means that there is no GPRS available. It is only available when the G is shown. I was able to connect then. I still think something may not be 100% but at least I know it is not the settings. I did notice some display flickering that I have never noticed. This was on the Today page.

Help!!!

I've followed all the steps on the Standardization project and must say it was great. Unfortunately, I have a blue SX66 on the Cingular network and cannot get MMS to work. I spent 2 hours on the phone with Cingular tech support only to have them refer me to the warranty exchange department (which is when I promptly hung up!).

Anyone who has any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I love the way it works now with the exception of this problem.

Thanks,
Ron

I did the update from the Standardization Project last last week. My whole reason for doing the update was to upgrade the Bluetooth to get my Jabra 250 headset to work. The update appeared to work fine but I still cannot connect with the headset. It appears the bluetooth was not updated, when I look at the settings/about it says Bt-PPC/PE Version 1.0.0 Build 3500.

Did I miss something or is there something else I have to do? I still cannot connect with the headset. I eamiled Chris but go no reply. I'm thinking though that my spam filter might have killed his email. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
-Jeff

Did you do the Extended ROM update? That is where the BT update is. Go to that page on the same website and follow the directions. My SX66 seems to be connecting better with my SE HBH-660 BT headset. Not that it matters much as I should have my new K-Jam tomorrow and my SX-66 goes up for sale.

Hmmm. I did not do anything different. Do you have some applications you did not have before such as Magic Button? If you don't then maybe you got your extended ROM confused, that is you may have mistakenly put the old data back in. I guess you could always just try re-installing the extended ROM again. I had the same BT version prior to update the extended ROM. Not sure what else I can suggest.

There's a few new applications and Magic Button is one of them, the startup screen has changed and the wallpaper has changed. Everything looks like it worked but for whatever reason the Blue Tooth version is reading the same and I can't connect the Jabra headset. I'll try doing the update again and see how it goes. I thought maybe there was a step I missed or something I forgot to do...looks as though no one else has had this problem.

SX66 Crew,

I found a Problem. After a Clean Firmware update of the 1.13.00 For Radio and for the Os is 1.40.00 and Ext Rom 1.40.125 for Cingular. I noticed after a while the Wireless network doesnt work or will not come on. But here is the other thing if i try to turn it on and it doesnt work. I soft reboot. Well it reboots and then when it loads everything it sticks at 20% on contacts and locks up. I have to ether hard reboot or run it in safe mode. This is a Major Problem. I have reinstall from front to back everything on this unit and it does it every time. Even on the other one i have running the same SX66 stuff with no software installed. Also I noticed if i run like my contacts and some other things and i try to turn on Bluetooth a msg comes up saying there is not enough memory for bluetooth to run and asks me to reboot. I check the memory and it is like 45 storage and 50 for Programs. What is going on here anyhelp please on this. This is not just on one unit i have 2 units that are brandnew. if i put cingulars stuff back on it standard os ext rom and radio rom it doesnt do it.

Posted by: Dsstech

Another problem i have fund that if you have a lot of contacts if you have contacts open and go about your day. When you close contacts it gives an error about Critial Low memory for contacts contacts has to close now

Posted by: Dsstech

also is there an WM 2005 yet instead of WM2003SE?

Posted by: N7TND

I have the same problem and have gone back to the Cingular ROM....Problem solved.

Posted by: BrianSkibinski

There is a WM5 release, but it's still pretty unstable. I had it installed and the patches helped quite a bit, but pocketbreeze wasn't working too well so I had to downgrade back for a while.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde...eangel_WM5_Home

As for the memory issues, it's long been known that the BT isn't the greatest and some ROMs suck up the memory. As far as I know it's considered a Known bug but I'm not aware of any new development on the issue (everyone is focused on WM5)

Did I miss something or is there something else I have to do? I still cannot connect with the headset. I eamiled Chris but go no reply. I'm thinking though that my spam filter might have killed his email. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Try upgrading to BT Stack Build 3900. I beleive Chris has the cab for that on his site. It seems to stabailize the BT a little bit.

I upgraded to the august Cingular extROM today and i'm happy so far, except that I have no option to turn on the WIFI ... any ideas? There's no longer a check box next to "wifi is OFF."

Where did you get that ROM from? The Blue Angel one has just been too unstable for me.

And it's a change in the way the OS is set up, now that i've done a bunch of reading -- turned wifi on in the wifi manager and it's on, the checkbox is no more

Thanks...That is the ROM I have been having the problems with....I'm just gonna stick with the 'official' Cingular/Siemens ROM - more stable for me.

since there is no check box anymore you have to go to the WLan icon on the bottom left of that screen and turn it on....

For all the people that are having problems with these upgrades....are any of you trying to load any backed-up files after you install the latest updates...because if you are then doing a restore after a ROM or ExtROM update it will revert back to the old ROM or ExtROM and will basically cause some issuses for you....in order to successfuly do a Back-up/Restore you'll need a program called Sprite Back-Up...this program has a feature that will allow you to do that....and as reguards to the bluetooth issues Build 3900 seems to be the most stable and you can find it at the xda-developers forums....though like someone mentioned earlier bluetooth headsets has always been an issue with the SX66/BlueAngel, i seem to have the best results with the motorola headsets vs. the others and i've tried plenty of different ones....

and whatever you do stay away from the Windows Mobile 5 updates for now since there are soooooo many issues with it still.....hope this helps some of you.....cheers...

In my experiences, I have always done a complete 'rebuild' from scratch; never had much luck with backing up.

I have found the "Blue Angel" firmware to be buggy and had the best luck with the latest 'official' Cingular/Siemens load.

By less buggy I mean:

1. Better Bluetooh performance
2. Less need for regular resets
3. No odd "Out of memory" errors.
