Hello i just got my 8100 a few days ago and i had 2 questions about it. If these are already answered im sorry but i tried to find my answers and was unsucessful.

1. I seen that you can transfer ringtones and everything using bitpim and a usb cable but is it possible to take the pictures that you took on your phone and transfer them to your computer using the software and the cable?

2. Since theres no 8100 usb cable out yet, what cable will work with it?

Thank you.

No USB Cable? Of course there is. The cable for the VX6100, as well as the software found in Verizon's "Mobile Office" kit for the VX6100 works great. And if your VX8100 has V-Cast enabled (meaning you are paying the $15 per month for V-Cast as an extra) you can also get your phone to connect to the National Broadband Network without paying the extra data charges.

I did this myself last night and it works. You first have to go into the phone's service menu (Select Menu, then hit "0", then type in all zeros when it presents you with XXXXX, then you should enable both Bluetooth DUN and Cable DUN. Then just hit "end" and return to the default screen.

Next, you should go to the Verizonwireless website, and download the latest VZAccess software (can't find it? just type in "VZAccess" in their site search and you will see a link to download the latest software and drivers). Of course, you need the cable for the VX6100 in order to make this work. If you buy the VX6100 Mobile Office kit, then you will also get the necessary software too, so you don't need to download it.

Simply connect the cable to an available USB port, make sure your phone is on, then run the VZAccess software (use the "Wizard" to let the software detect both your wireless and phone networks). You should then be able to connect to the National Network and/or the National Broadband Network as well as the Verizon High Speed and Quick2Net as well (all provided by Verizon).

I've used the VX6100 regularly this way whenever I have my laptop and I'm out of range of an 802.11x network or a wired network, and it's pretty quick. But with the VX8100 last night connected to the National Broadband, it was screaming.

I realize this answers only half your question about the cable. But to reiterate, you can get the cable directly from Verizon, or you can also get one from Radio Shack. Just make sure it is the cable for the 6100, not the 6000 (they are slightly different). The VX 6000 cable does NOT work with either the 6100 or the 8100, whereas the latter two are interchangeable.

By the way, you can also use Bluetooth to connect to the internet, either by way of BT DialUp Networking (DUN) to connect to ISP's like AOL, Earthlink, or even to a VPN, and you can also use the BT to connect to VZ Access and gain access to the Verizon Wireless data networks too. Bluetooth is a LOT slower though when using the phone as a modem. With a direct USB cable, it's blazingly fast.

As for your first question, pictures are most easily transferred from the 8100 using a mini-SD card. Simply transfer the pictures (or save them by default) to the mini-SD, then pop out the card and transfer the pictures (or songs, or whatever) to your computer, and vice-versa.

Ringtones can be transferred and played, but you can't use them as ringtones....A lot of people have written about this, and some are trying to hack the phone to get them to be able to play as ringtones, but I don't think that's possible...at least not just yet.

Thanks for your reply, helps a lot. One more thing, you mentioned the Sd card....i understand what your saying but how does it hook up to the computer? Is there some kind of pod that hooks up to computer and then you plug in the mini card? Sorry never used one of those mini cards b4 lol. And my computer is kinda old so it doesnt have a mini card reader. Thx again.

I am not familiar with the 6100 software mentioned in an earlier post but if you use BitPim you can transfer ringtones and use them as ringtones, just change the extension from mp3 to mid.

Even if you don't change the extension from .mp3 to .mid they still play as ringtones.

I Also Just Got A Vx8100 And I Am Having Trouble Finding A Usb Cable. I Asked Verizon About The Vx6100 Cable Or Any Others That Might Work And The Local People Said No Other Cable Would Work Nor Would The Software. Are They Just Uninformed Or Can I Use The Vx6100 Office Suite They Have?

They're not uninformed. They are instead intentionally giving you mis-information because VZW doesn't want you to be able to use a cable for anything.

But you can get a cable from Radio Shack, Circuit City, Comp USA or on E-Bay, or any number of other places online. You can get the LG Data Cable which is made for the VX6100 and it will work, no doubt about it.

VZW is trying to stop people from using cables. They want you to use GetItNow (GIN) and they don't want you to use DUN either (Dial Up Networking). They are in business to make money, and they want to charge you $80 a month for using their broadband network (EVDO) in your laptop, requiring you to buy a card for your PC and then to commit to a minimum 2-year deal at that price ($59 if you already have a phone and just want to add a line). If you're like me, you probably only use a tethered (USB-cable connection) phone as a last resort, for example, when there's no wired or other Wi-Fi connection available. I use my phone maybe, just maybe, 10 or 15 minutes a month. No way I'm going to buy a PC card and pay $80 a month for that.

Anyway, VZW is in it for the money. They've separated their "consumer" marketing from the "business" marketing. For those of us in small businesses, who are both, they really don't have a suitable middle ground. I've talked with their tech people, their marketing people, and others throughout the company, and they really just don't give a ****. They know they can't be all things for all people, so they will take the path of most resistance, the one which yields the greatest ROI for VZW, but not for their customers. In fact, many of these VZW folks have told me that the company thinks of most of their phones as "entertainment" devices, or diversions, or revenue generating devices. If you want a "business" tool, they'll sell you a Smartphone, or a Treo, or another type of phone/pda. But if you want to use an EVDO-capable phone for anything other than a toy, watching clips from Comedy Channel and ESPN, fuggedaboudit.

No, they are not "misinformed."

They are lying to you, and they know it.

I bought my cable from Radio Shack and it works with my old phone LG VX6000 as well as my new phone LG VX8100. It is cable 19 and on the box it says For LG Models 1200, VI5225, VX4500, VX4600, VX6000. You are suppose to use it with Future Dial software but it works perfect with the BitPim software (you can download for free from http://www.bitpim.org)

HTH,
Melvin
