I was going to buy a 6230 as a birthday gift for my girlfriend, but someone pointed out that some people are having problems with it. Who has had problems with thier 6230? Freezing, resets, etc.? Thanks.

the freezing problem seems to be with the updated firmware 5.35 i believe it is.
i have the 4.43 and not once has my 6230 froze
although the BT is buggy, i don't use it much so no complaints here

I had three 6230s with 5.34 Cingular build. They all froze, one did a reboot and two of them had the continuously scrolling contacts. Called Cingular, no help. Called Nokia, they are aware of the problem but have not reproduced it. Some say upgrading the firmware to the latest 5.4 would help. I decided to take it back and borrowed another phone until something better comes out (6682?).

Cingular really fubared the phone with all the branding...as mentioned, a firmware upgrade will fix the issue...

Its not the 5.35 firmware that is the problem. I believe it is the Cingular branded 5.34 firmware that freezes/constantly scrolls. My unbranded 5.35 is perfect.

Yea, I've been having problems (freezing and constant scrolling) with my Cingular branded 6230 w/5.34 as well. It's only happened twice so far though, and I've had the phone for about a month.

Mine is 5.34b and has the freeze and scrolling issue, sometimes when it freezes, I have been able to get out of it with hitting the button on my bluetooth headset, which leaves me to believe it is related to BT. I am curious any of you that have gotten a Cingular 6230b recently (within the last month or so) what firmware does it have now? Just wondering if they have fixed their problem. I am probably going to have to send it to get it flashed to 5.4 from iunlock.com which is going to cost some money. I would like to see Cingular stand behind their products since its their firmware that seems to be causing all these problems, and not get the runaround by them telling me to send it to Nokia for service.

Gee, I'm glad I stuck with 4.43. I can take the BT resetting itself once or twice an hour. Other than that, my phone seems not to have the litany of issues people discuss here on HoFo. No freezing, no complete reboots, nothing like that. Made 11/2004, with 0382 bluetooth.

Like many here I also have the 5.34 firmware and after having the phone since June I have had it turn itself off once and reboot on its own once. It's so infrequent, I don't consider it a big deal and I don't think it's serious enough to stop you from getting the phone. Aside from those two things, the phone has been great. It's easy to use, comfortable to hold and gets great reception.

If anything, get the phone flashed to v. 5.40. That's supposed to solve the problem. I would do that if I knew of a local place to take it to.

scroll to the bottom, fill out Step 2 (you dont need to put in your email). click submit. click the link under Option A. if nothing comes up, change the radius to 50, and click search.

i see you're in the Bay Area. the only one that came up for me was:
INFINITEL COMMUNICATIONS INC
637 HOWARD ST
SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94105
415-957-1688 - voice
415-777-3646 - fax

i dont know what they would charge...you could call and ask.

Thanks for the info. I think up in SF, Sunrise Wireless will also do firmware upgrades. At least I know they would for Sony Ericsson phones, so I would assume Nokias as well. I hate driving in SF though, so I've held off on it. I've been trying to look around in the South Bay, but if I can't find any place I guess eventually I'll go up.

well, those are just the Nokia Authorized Service Centers. there probably are little independent shops all over the place that will upgrade/flash firmware.

5.34
23-03-05

Heh...fubared...love that word...

Anyway, the problem, as other have said here, seems to be with the "fubared" Cingular firmware. If you buy an unbranded one (or a Cingular-branded one and pay some company like iUnlock to unbrand it) it'll be fine, I think.

Good luck.
