Hi,
Just got the SMT5600. I've noticed if I use the browser, the signal strenth icon changes to the GPRS in use icon" (Signal bars with the small G box to the upper left).
Even after I quit using the browser, this icon stays on until I power cycle the phone... (And I do mean really quit the browser through the task manager).
Is this a bug? I'm not on a data plan so I don't want to mistakenly get hit with more charges than what I am actively using..

I have the same problem. To get rid of it, I switch to "flight mode" and then back to "normal mode" and it disappears.

If your apps are shut-down, even w/ that icon showing, you are not transferring data...it's a frequently discussed 'bug' on this phone compared to something like the MPx220.
This works much better, if you go thru the process of unlocking (application unlock) your SMT 5600, the following link has info on adding a program called Shell-Orange to make this function like the MPx220 where you double-tap the end call button to disconnect from GPRS...works great on my SMT5600.
