vx8000 - DATA CABLE or E-MAIL

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

i'm thinking of getting an 8000 for myself, and was just wondering if changing the newly cut .mp3 to .mid files is absolutly necessary and if u would recommend uploading them to the 8000 via data cable or e-mail, and if either has any advantages over another...

it would be nice to just send them thru e-mail n have them work everytime instead of having to go out n buy a data cable n connect my phone to my PC everytime.

just looking for some input... thanks...

(when i say thru e-mail, i mean thru the ###-###-####@vzwpix.com service)

i have a data cable and hardly ever use it, just inconvient. as far as changing .mp3's to .mid's it sounds better on my phone as a .mid but either way itll play.just if the file is above a certain amount of space then i have to make it a .mp3 to play. so id say just email them works fine quick and easy, and change em to .mid if you want em to sound good.

Thanks for the input...

i'm looking at the tutorial thread for the VX8000 and basically everyone thats posting on there is using a data cable... Now i don't care too much for uploading many videos or pictures of big size into my phone, just want some good quality ringers from my .mp3's on my comp...

So would i still just be better off e-mailing them one-by-one? or is a data cable something i should look into...

Also, it would be nice if someone could type up a step-by-step tutorial for uploading ringers n such onto a VX8000 via (e-mail@vzwpix.com). Though i think i get the thick of it myself, it would always be nice to have a guide behind my back, just incase...

If you sign up for the IN messaging plan you'll get 50 extra messages (emails) a month to use for ringtones, etc. I opted for the $10/250 message plan so I have lots of extra messages for that purpose (I also do it off-peak so I'm not using minutes.) I also use BITPIM and a cable with my VX8000, however I only use it to copy pictures off the phone (I don't use BITPIM to delete ANYTHING - I do that on the phone.) I don't BITPIM for ringtones because when you delete the audio.dat file (as is suggested on this forum) you lose the ringers you set up for your caller ID in your phone book and you have to reset them. So the cable is not really necessary if you use your messages.

For chopping down my mp3's, i was just wondering what FREE program i can download that would be best/user-friendly...

i'm running on Windows 98, just FYI, and i have GoldWave downloaded, just have to play around with that a lil more and figure out how to save the broken down files and keep the size down and what have you....

i use audacity or just www.cheap-cds.com because they have most of the songs i want from the part i want for the ringer.

As for uploading ringers via email heres the steps i go thru.
1. find the .mp3 i want as a ringtone and rename the extension to .mid (optional)
2. go to my email and address an email to yournumberhere@vzwpix.com
3. attach the .mp3 or .mid and hit send with no subect, header, or body
4. when i receieve it on my phone i hit the right soft key and then option 5
5. rename the file if you want and then just hit OK
6. Go to menu, settings, sounds, call sounds, call ringtone, and select one of the four options from the list and then find your ringtone in there and hit ok to set it.

thanks a lot, that should prove helpful...

but i did see somewhere that if you send the e-mail from an AOL mailbox, it's more likely to mess up n not work... so would sending thru AOL to ur @vzwpix.com work fine? or should i use a yahoo or hotmail account?

Also, i noticed that ur around the Detroit area, as am I... hows reception? i'm using cingular for the next week or so til i switch over to Verizon, n it can be good, but for the most part, it sux (especially around my sub in Farmington)

also, what is the suggested rate n stuff for the vx8000 ringtones... i've been saving them as 24000Hz, 64 Kbps, stereo, and their file sizes are in the 200 Kb - 230 Kb range...

Are those settings fine? if so, about how many of these files would fit on my phone if i transfered them to my @vzwpix.com e-mail... any info would be great...

BTW i've been using goldwave to play w/ my mp3's, n it gets pretty easy to use after toying w/ it for 30 mins.

to answer the AOL question i havent heard of that problem but i use Gmail and it works fine so probably just go with a yahoo or hotmail.

the reception in the detroit area is great for me, i have usually 3 to 5 bars, however, i never hear a difference or notice any difference in connecting from 3 to 5.

your settings are fine. and i have about 24 thirty one second ringers and its not full yet so i guess when i reach the max we'll see.

good luck and have fun
pm me if you have any more questions
