Nokia 6682/Cingular ad Sept 2005 Cargo magazine

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

It is on page 23. Of course, these ads are set months in advance, but this may increase pressure on Cingular and Nokia.

I have a scanned image (put it in a pdf), but it is 242K and hofo will not accept it. pm me and I can email it, or tell me where I can upload it.

Thanks.
Brian

An ad in a magazine will cause people, other than those in this forum, to start asking about the phone. Public sentiment does have some influence.

Nokia and Cingular did pay for the ad as well.

That's a good theory, but I have never seen it have much/any affect with Cingular or any carrier, for that matter.

Cingular themselves advertised the 6230 (inadvertantly) months before it came out. This is par for the course.

That's my point; it could be months.

That's the same point I tried to make. I guess I should have been more direct .

OK, aresthoth and IHAP--you win. We can't make Nokia or Cingular do anything. I just need a new phone with bluetooth, and all that US carriers have to offer is crap. They have us where they want us, and there's nothing we can do about it!

I find hofo very useful and informative--I don't know why you both want to be jerks about me wanting to contribute. I guess I will just "watch" the discussions since you both feel I have nothing to offer (and I guess you two both have infinite wisdom).

Dude they weren't trying to be rude, only state the truth. Tons of phones get pushed back, specifically with Cingular, all the time, and not in time to stop press ads. The z500, s710, 6230, tons of phones are advertized and yet take a few more weeks/months to come available. It's a well known fact that Cingular planned to launch the 6682 end of July/early August, and that something on Nokia's fault held it up, and it's now somewhat in limbo. I don't know why people seem to think that carriers or manufacturers enjoy the negative press of advertising phones and then not having them. I would rest assured that Cingular and Nokia are both working on getting it out asap. As far as the "general public" exerting pressure on either, it's not likely. For one, the phone itself. The "general public" is not interested in a candy-bar phone, much less a smartphone. The "general public" wants flip phones with cameras on them. I am a cell phone salesman, doing T-mobile, Sprint, and Cingular, and most people walk up and are looking for either 1. the cheapest phone they can get or 2. a camera flip phone. That's all IHAP and the other guy were saying. Don't take offense so quickly.

That looks fricken sweet, but I am already sold on the hp65xx. I was just about to get the UK version but I will just purchase it outright from Cingular instead. If I don't like it maybe VZW might be my answer because I played with the sammy i730 with EVDO it really an amazing phone with blazing fast speeds while surfing the net. I hope the hw65xx will be fast for browing with edge or I don't need to tether. The good thing about the i730 it has 802b prebuilt and evdo.

Don't pay attention to some of the Cingular forum guys. They are really really arrogant, thanks for the info on the ad. Like I said that phone looks really nice.

i agree with all of your points, but aresthoth's first reply was very blunt and terse. it was not until his follow-up (which was edited) that he addressed the OP more directly and explained his reasoning. ihap came in a little late, and apparently didn't get past the OP.

their comments and subsequent explanations could have been friendlier and softer.

and again, while i do follow everything in your very detailed post (as always, thanks for that!), isn't this the New Cingular?

Often I edit my responses for spelling or grammar errors, because I don't want someone to misinterpret what I said. In any case, I wasnt trying to be rude. I just wanted to say the truth as I saw it. I have been with Cingular a long time and I know their business philosophy and thus how they work. I was simply trying to relay that. If my responses came off blunt and terse or unfriendly, that really wasn't my intention.

If you felt offended, I apologize. I wasn't trying to be rude, but rather consistent with what I know about Cingular. It has happened too often where a phone/device will get advertised in a magazine and then get delayed and in some cases is never released, such as the Moto A630. I was just trying to relay that. IHAP is a bit more knowledgeable of Cingular than I am, but I do have my connections. I know you want the phone; many people do. I owned it for a week (direct from Nokia), so I understand people's eagerness. I hope Cingular rewards that eagerness, but don't be surprised it they disappoint. They have done so many times before.

Shadowless is hosting a slightly larger version of the ad here: http://www.shadowreborn.com/webimg/6682_ad.jpg

Sorry that my frustration is so prevalent here. I waited for the original 6230b to come out for over six months from cingular and then settled on a T637 instead of waiting an additional 3 months. Now I have two dead T637s, just out of warranty. I would like to switch back to Nokia, but the current 6230b that cingular is offering is buggy, plus it is just an "old phone" these days. I don't really need a smartphone, but I do need a bluetooth phone compatible with my car, and cingular is just not offering much. In the old days, cingular would do firmware upgrades here in Houston, now everything is by mail and they are not going to upgrade past their "standard firmware" (for the 6230, 5.34 with buggy cingular mods).

I look at cingular.com, phonescoop.com, and here every day looking for a little news of something "coming soon". Maybe that just adds to my frustration. I just wish Cingular would "surprise us" and come out with a great phone that would meet my needs.

Thanks for listening.

Buy off ebay and get an unbranded model. Screw waiting for Cingular.

Posted by: Rcadden

you can get a 6230b for relatively cheap nowadays, if you watch ebay. $36.48 will get you 5.40 unbranded from iUnlock.com. Don't know about stability but Evan says that the unbranded tends to be more stable than the branded. I'll let you know this weekend when I get it back. I wouldn't hold out for Cingular too much if you're not looking for a smartphone.

We all get frustrated; it's just a matter of how we channel that frustration. When it comes to phone releases, frustration and Cingular go hand in hand, because they can be as slow a snail in molasses. I am not really sure why. I have heard so many reasons (excuses) for this that I am no longer sure what is truth or fiction anymore. One theory that intrigues me is the idea that Cingular's flex sometimes corrupts the original firmware in the phones and causes various issues. I cannot confirm this, but I know for sure that many of the unbranded versions of phones that I have bought don't suffer the same issue as the Cingular branded ones. I owned the 6682 for a week and didn't experience one software problem/glitch. I have heard that Cingular delayed it due to software issues. I would love to know what issues, because many people who have the unbranded version don't have any complaints. I returned my 6682 because even though money is not an issue for me, I just couldn't justify paying $600 for a phone that is no better than the one I currently use.

I mentioned this on the other 6682 epic thread and IHAP pointed out that Cingular decides what they want modified on the phone but Nokia still implements the changes, so it's still a Nokia problem if what I've read(erroneous battery indicator) is really why this thing was pulled back. Still, why fix something that ain't broke? **** you Cingular!

A search of eBay shows there are none listed, and haven't been in quite some time.

Many of us can get the phone from Cingular NBO with a nice discount so it's not like waiting a few more weeks to save $200-$300 is going to kill any of us.
