are the data cables the same for both phones?

Technically(at least according to Verizon) there is no data cable available for the 8000. Seriously. That is what they will tell you if you ask, and if you visit their website (verizonwireless.com) and look at the accessories available for the 8000 you will not find any data cable available. Verizon used to advertise a data cable kit for the 8100 (as of last week though they took down the link). I ordered it directly from Verizon, and what I received was a cable which states that it works for the 4700, 8000 and 8100. It is the same, identical cable as the one which comes with the data "mobile office" kit which is sold for the LG VX6100.

So, the answer to your question is "yes," any cable which works with the 8000 will also work with the 8100, even though Verizon is not technically supporting any cables at all at this time.

If you want something that works, get the mobile office kit for the 6100. The software works, and it works great, including the phone book transfer and the modem software too. And for now, it's almost as good as using BitPim (which really doesn't yet work for the 8100)...well, not if you want to play with the files, but doing that isn't for everyone anyway, and you have to be extremely careful not to screw up the phone beyond all recognition.

I'm not sure about cables purchased from Future Data (i.e., the ones at Radio Shack), but I have heard many people here say that they work for phones like the 4700, 6100 and 7000 (i.e., non-V-Cast phones). If you can find one cheap, give it a try.
