7250 (verizon) vs. 7290 (cingular)

Is there a difference between the two? Ive been looking at the Verizon & Cingular Websites and it looks like Cingular would run my substantially more. I need a ton of minutes and here's what I've come up with:

Verizon:
4000 mins w/ Unlimited Mobile to Mobile & Unlimited N&W & Unlimited Data ($169.99)

Cingular:
4000 mins w/ Unlimited M2M & Unlimited N&W ($149.99) Then the Unlimited Data for the BB is $49.99, so my total cost for the same cost at Cingular is $199.98, $30 more then at Verizon.

I really like GSM, but $30 a month adds up. Also, the package at Verizon is a bundled package and I was unable to find bundled packages at Cingular...do they not have bundled packages?

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry7250/4.0.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

Besides the wireless technology, the specs are about the same.

Although the 7250 apparently has the ability to upgrade to EVDO--giving this device more of a life.

In my experience, the 7250 is a much faster device as well.

Make sure you check coverage with both carriers to ensure whichever one you go with works where you want it to.

That's good 2 here, I live in the Phoenix area and (knock on wood) have heard nothing but good about verizon in the area. I would like to go w/ Cingular just from the standpoint that it's GSM & if I decided I just wanted to use a regular phone for awhile I could just swap the sim card in. Anyone know of any bundle packages for Cingular?

Not much of a help, but if you bundle voice and data with Cingular the $49.99 unlimited Blackberry plan is $44.99. That is what I have.

Verizon is really getting aggressive with their data pricing.

I tried Verizon for two weeks, but now I have Cingular.

For me: Downside to Verizon was that you cannot swap to a non-Blackberry phone on the weekends like you can with a GSM (SIM chip) unit. That was more important (to me) than the cheaper data pricing.

Upside to Verizon & 7250: The 7250 is a faster device (faster processor) and the Verizon data network for Blackberry is faster than Cingular's (right now), so web browsing is better on the Verizon 7250.

Other well know difference: Cingular/GSM will allow you to use your phone internationally, not with Verizon.

I have a question about this.

I just bought both a BB 7100G and a 7290 (just in case I want to switch in the future.) I DO NOT have a BlackBerry Data plan. Do not. But I know I need one. As such...

  • What works for my situation? I would like my BB to have unfettered access to VeriChat, (of course) my email, and the RSS feeds of PocketDay. People have been telling me that BB's occassionaly miss calls because of the consistent GPRS connection. When a call comes in does it supsend the GPRS connection; how does this work?!
  • To properly utilize the BB data and IM capabilites, should I just keep my exisiting Cingular voice line, and open a 2nd line with a Blackberry Data plan? Input appreciated!

No current GPRS device allows voice and data at the same time. GPRS is somewhat better at suspending the data session while a voice call is handled than CDMA (faster)--however you will miss a call if the caller happens to call in while the device is actively handling data. Since wireless data is very "burst" like, the chance of missing calls is minimal. Obviously the possibility of missing a call increases the more data your device handles.

To answer your second question, you need to know how much you intend to use the data features. And do you like to carry on IM conversations while on a voice call? If you use plenty of data, and worry about missing calls, then by all means get two devices (many people do). However I would suggest trying out the BB for a month to see how it works for you. Personally I don't like carrying more than one device if I can help it.

That definitely helped, jase88.

Second monochrome Nokia for voice line, with no color screen or camera.
BB 7290 for data (and I'll flip the 7100 on eBay).

Thanks!!

Yeah, thats the main reason I want to go w/ Cingular, I just wish they'd have some decent deals...also, are you only able to sign a 2 year contract w/ Cingular? When I go to the website I only get the option for a 2-year contract...

Hmm, haven't walked through the online order recently. Just tried it and only saw the 2-year option as well. I know I was in the store the other day and had the option for a 1-year with less discount on hardware.
