Why do we like BlackBerry?? Can't remember any longer

Receiving "uncaught exception: invalid text" when trying to edit many of my 600 Address Book contacts since upgrading to v. 4.0.2.32 (did not happen with previous crappy 4.x update). This is yet another issue which makes me long for a Treo. Though I always get flamed for saying this, Blackberry = nothing but problems. T-Mobile (my carrier) has yet to release a system update that does not present MAJOR problems for the user.

Is it just bad programming or bad hardware???? I actually don't care and would just like my Blackberry to work as advertised. I am thoroughly OVER RIM!!!!

Using a 7100T (2nd one sent by T-Mobile due to the shutdown issue)

Don't know why you are having problems, but my 7520 works perfectly.

Try the treo, I did and went back to the BB in less than a week. They got their problems, too.

I'm with Greg. I never thought I'd dump my Palm and use the address book and calendar in the BB. About a year ago I did just that - threw the whole Palm seteup out the window.....and never looked back.

Coupled with a Blackberry Enterprise Server - I don't think you can beat the BB device for integration with your email, calendar, addresses and tasks/notes.

If you want third party applications - then I do feel the Treo or PPC have more to offer - because of more developers. The problem I found with my Treo is that the developers tended to make the OS itself relatively unstable with all the hacks and tweaks.

So I've been very happily using my 7520 via Nextel plus the outsourced BES services of Mailstreet for about the last year. I am a consultant and the time this combination saves me is worth probably 10 to 20 times the monthly fee that I pay. Easily.

Interesting first post!

This type of posting is what tends to tilt the scale so that people think a certain product is bad. Few people post "Well, I have been using XXXX BlackBerry for a week now, and it works as advertised." Which in fact, is the way it works for the vast majority of people. But one guy has problems, and then the whole of the system is terrible and it sucks.... :rolleyes2

What do you hope to get out of this post? Go and buy a Treo and be happy, for crying outloud.....

I doubt that!
Seeing as I'm a Treo 270/600/650GSM ----> BB 7100G convert!
I love it so...

Wirelessly posted (your electric?: BlackBerry7520/4.0.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Browser/5.0.3.3 UP.Link/5.1.2.12)

No offense to you other T Mobile 7100t users, but I think for your first BB expierence you picked the worst d*mn BB out there, main saying for that is SureType and really nothing else (Dr. Evil: I can't back that up).

In your opinion, of course. As in my opinion I have come to prefer SureType, and I passed on the 7290.

You're probably getting flamed for broad and wildly inaccurate statements like this. I've used a number of updates from T-Mobile without incident.

Posted by: akmedia

Yes, this is my first post on HowardForums but I have posted on many of the other BB-oriented boards.

None-the-less, whether you're a crackberry junkie or not, the 7100t has been plagued with numerous issues: shutting off spontaneously during calls; infierior signal; outrageously bad outgoing sound quality; hardly any 3rd-party support; T-Mobile and the "closed Internet ports" issue; extruiatingly slow boot-up times; and, shoddy (T-Mobile) handheld support, and the list goes on. Of course the biggest problem (and this never sits well on these posts as I always receive the equivilent of the go-back-to-Russia-if-you-don't-like-it-here response is that I use a Macintosh -- which makes using a BB even more of a joy!)

It is completely disingenious for anyone to say that this model, RIM's first consumer-oriented model, has not had its problems. That being said, I too have used a Palm and have experienced frustrating issues. However, not nearly to the extent of the BB 7100t.

Oh, and to add to the list, SmartType stinks! (though it's no Newton, thanks god).

So why do buttheads insist on telling us "oh my phone is working just fine."

Hey buddy, you don't even have the same model number phone as me???? So listen Ensign A**hole, your comment is meaningless!

With everyone giving their Psyche 101 responses to my post, none of you so-called "experts" have bothered to address the error I'm getting (Check this post and others like it: http://blackberryforums.com/showthr...hlight=uncaught ).

Thanks for all the help!

Probably because you are such a friendly, charming self.......!

Well put... Let's see ... I need your help, I have several people respond with experiences/advice, then I

The 7100 has issues. I have been using the 7290, have done the T-Mo updates, and have had 0 issues. I also flip flop between my Treo650 and my 7290. After trying virtually every latest and greatest PPC device (all now for sale) I narrowed it down to my T650 and my 7290. And the 7290 is winning ... I wish it had a nicer PIM but you can't beat the e-mail functionality, ease of use, voice quality and overall rock solid performance.

I hope you find what you are looking for. It will be a long trip though, if you continue with your current attitude towards the people trying to offer assistance.

True! Also notice that the op in the link he sent, outlines the problem and asks for help, rather than the way he did of slamming the product and going on from there....THEN he slams the people in follow up posts...and now he gets bent out of shape because people are not trying to help....you are right - he'll have a long trip.....

What a useless thread. Why don't we get back on track here... Why do we like the blackberry was the title so perhaps we should answer it?

Thanks for your post. Finally someone that has some cogent answers and admits there are indeed issues with the 7100. Perhaps a switch (though it would cost me) to the 7290 would help make my BB experience a better one. Though, I must say, reports from people I know that use the Treo 650 are generally good so it might be a tough choice.

Now, to all you board members that take issue with my brand of 'Charm" oh well... It seems that ranting about a product people may have developed a very personal relationship with (i.e., their BlackBerry's) hurts. As a Macintosh tech support person I see this all the time on PC and Mac boards: both sides draw clear battle lines that rely less on fact and way more on emotion. And, as a New Yorker, I tend to say it as I see it (rants included) and in the case of my 7100t, I think my rants are well deserved.

Oh, and while I'm at it, one more rant: what's with the lack of BlueTooth file exchange support? And why is there no BlackBerry vCard support either... Just more thoughts.

Also, although the headline for the post was indeed provocative (or perhaps even hyperbolic) I was hoping people could read past that and answer the question at hand. You know, the one about uncaught exceptions when trying to edit Address Book entries. But alas...

  1. PIM features
  2. No crashes / Rock solid BB performance vs. Palm based smartphones seemingly designed to crash :rolleyes2
  3. Tight push-email integration

Oh dear.

Posted by: astro_warp

Its not a tough choice. The Treo 650 road is a rocky one. Sure there are many many many [poorly written in most cases] applications for you to download, but hardware, interface and platform is a crock of crap. I prefer a device that does what it says on the tin, the Treo is just too vague, it does a bit of everything, but none of it very well and I say this an an owner of a treo who decided not to upgrade to the 650 after testing it for 10 days. Its terrible. Its gimmicky and almost childlike in its desire to be good at everything, but fail miserably at everything. Then we have companies offering push email on them, fair enough if the device itself was anygood. Type an email and half an hour and one line later you are staring at a pile of your own hair on the floor wishing you had listened to those who said dont! Its fiddly. If I was in a situation where I wanted to get a message to someone quickly using a treo, I'd light a fire and use smoke signals, its that much easier.

Nothing Palm makes comes even close to the stability of Blackberry (not incl 7100 in that as I dont consider it a true blackberry like say 7230, 7290.....even older stuff like 58xx series) and the perfect design and ease of use.

I've used Palm o0n and off for years and yes, if you are facing a long journey on the train then it might be more entertaining (in between soft, warm and hard resets!), but frankly the long winded approach to everything, the lack of serious multitasking and the keyboard/UI layout is piss poor frankly.

No, it may crap on a few peoples heads to hear it, but no matter how many slick games, utilities, cameras and "entertainment" products you install on Palm, its still a Palm, and Palm is not even in same league as Blackberry.

P.s: Sure I'm going to get feedback about saying 7100 series isnt a real blackberry - sorry!

As a recent user of the 7250 I can agree with your 7100 comment. I am an email hound and love the versitility of the full QWERTY keyboard.

However, I do use the phone on occasion. When I tried to answer incoming calls I would always hit the ESC key which would ignore the call. I even tried getting a leather case vs. the plastic holster but had the same result (less w/leather case). My only option was a BT headset but not for occasional phone use (don't like things sticking in my ear).

So I returned it within the 15-day trial period. I hope the rumor about a 7103e BB for Verizon will come to pass this fall. It won't be as email-efficient but it will be a BB. Treo's were never an option.

It isn't owned by Bill Gates . . . . yet

If you are talking about the esc on 7250 (which i think is like 7290) then its down to the method you use for removing it from the holster.

Alot of people make the mistake of dragging the BB out of the holster by grabbing it from the side, but there is in fact another way, much more efficient, using just one thumb.

Its difficult to explain, so I can take a few pics to illustrate what i mean and post a link if anyone is interested.

Please do post a link.

I never tried to extract the BB using the case sides. Having had a non-phone BB in the past, I've always "pushed up" from the bottom. But in order to not drop the BB AND answer the call within the 4-5 rings AND clicking the trackwheel to answer the call, I almost always hit the ESC key.

I like the proposed design of the Electron RIM - they include the Send/End key on the fron of the unit, eliminating the ESC key from phone operation.
