Verichat question....

I'm thinking about getting a Treo 650. I currently have a SE T637 and a OGO. I use the heck out of my Ogo on Yahoo messenger, but I hate carrying two devices with me. If I get a Tro ^50 with the Verichat program do instant messages go gprs/edge, or as a text message? With my Ogo, it takes about 4 to 5 seconds for a message to be recieved, how long does it take on Verichat?

Thanks!

Verichat uses the data network. You can have it alert you to new messages via SMS or data network when the application is not in use. The major drawback is that when it uses the network, you have the possibility of missing phone calls. More likely on CDMA networks, less likely on GSM.

Not true. You will always miss phone calls as your phone would be off when you use GPRS/EDGE. Your instant messages are instant. They are like when you are on PC.

So I wouldnt get any phone calls while using data...man that sucks, I guess I cant go that route then

I go the two phone route to avoid that problem. One for voice, one for data.

I used VeriChat and kept it on all the time and never missed a call. When a call somes in it disconnects from GRPS and reconnects when the call is over.

yup.. thats exactly what happens

I think Verichat is a really good chat program... i think the only thing i wish it had was tabs for multiple chat sessions..

VeriChat is good with everything except price. Here are some free apps (only problem is you might have multiple apps): ChitChat Lite is a free MSN client. ICQ(free). Yahoo. Hope this helps save some $$$!

There is nothing close to Verichat. It is as close as you can get to desktop MSN. You can even send files and stuff. Only missing some emoticons, display picture and some really simple stuff. I agree though, unless you are a hardcore messenger, you may be able to stick with the cheaper or freewares.

I have verichat on Treo 650 through VZW and although I prmariyl use data than cellular there are times when the phone does get through while I have verichat connected. I use the always on feature but most calls do get missed. However the verichat program is excellent. You get what you pay for.

I dont think this has to do with Verichat software. Missing incoming calls has been a comman problems my customers complain about with Verizon service.

Palm actually said that when using GPRS/EDGE, the calls would be forwarded to voicemail. However, it would make sense for your Treo to turn off the GPRS/EDGE radio to receive a call but I dont understand how it knows there is a call. Also, I find this quite annoying as you just got connected to GPRS/EDGE and have to disconnect because a call is coming in. I would actually prefer the voicemail method more.

ACTUALLY, one of the benefits of GSM over CDMA is the fact that GSM allows incoming calls while you have a GPRS data connection open. If you have a data connection open on CDMA, ALL CALLS will be forwarded to voicemail because there is no way for the phone to receive the incoming call. With GSM, even if you have a GPRS connection open, if you are IDLE on that connection, incoming calls will come through. However, if you are downloading a huge webpage in Blazer, downloading a large file, etc, chances are during that length of time you are "receiving data" the phone may not respond to an incoming call. If you happen to stop "transmiting" in the process of the incoming call, the phone will be able to still kick in and receive the call before it goes to voicemail. However the great thing about VeriChat is that it only transmits when you actually send the message, which is maybe a millisecond every so so. So unless you are sending/receiveing a file via VeriChat on a GSM treo, you WILL receive the call. That is why i will never go back to CDMA again. I'm big on two-way so im on AIM 24/7 and have never missed a call on my GSM treo!!

If you dont have multiple chat sessions, how do you click back and forth to different people at the same time with Verichat, or is this not possible?

Yes, it is possible. There's spot you tap, to pop up a list of open chat windows. I've had three open before.......same service, different service.....doesn't matter.

I do not know the limit on how many you can have open.
