K750i in the Bay Area

Hi, I am planning on getting the Sony K750i, but since it doesn't support the 850 band I was wondering if the reception will hold on 1900. Has anyone tried this yet, or have a phone running on only 1900 and how's your reception. Any suggestions are appreciated as to what I should do, and if I should go ahead and get this phone.

Thanks!

PS. I'm in Sunnyvale, near San Jose.

It'll work ok. Just think of it as no worse than T-Mobile coverage.

Last time I was in California using my K750i w/ a friends Cingular sim I found the RF to be good but not great. There were areas where my call quality was quite poor... I found using my Razr was much better due to the 850/1900 for North America. In San Jose specifically my RF on K750i wasn't too bad. Issues I had were in a few buildings or stores in malls but other than that it was fine.

For the 10000000 time... Non-850 phones on Cingular are a bad idea.

AT&T Wireless's network in California was 850/1900 and since they are disolving the roaming agreements with TMobile a 1900 only network, it would be in your best interest not to purchase a phone without 850.

Why would you buy a car without an engine or wheels?

I agree, but a better analogy would be why would you buy a car with a 4 speed manual transmission or maybe a 3 speed automatic. You'll still be able to drive (as in still get a signal in most areas) but the experience won't be up to snuff.

With the shifts in spectrum right now... Buying a 1900 only phone is like buying a car without an engine or wheels. UMTS is going to be taking up large chunks of 1900 spectrum. That means 850 will be even more important.

You would do fine up here, Edge Wireless, the Cingular Affiliate providing GSM/GPRS/EDGE service in this area (Mendocino County, as well as Lake, Humbold, Del Norte, Trinity, Siskiyou, Lassen and Plumas Counties, and in SE ID, parts of Sou Ore and SW WY) runs strictly on 1900. So you'd be well covered up here in God's country

Anyone who thinks it is OK to run a non-850 phone on Cingular is out of their mind no matter what region they are in....

The chances of someone staying in a 1900 only area 100% of the time is slim to none...

Um, that's happening in a couple of years right? I don't know about you people, but I will have had like 5 more phones before that happens.

Thanks for the replies! I'm guessing I'll give it a try, if its not working out well, I guess I can always sell the phone and be out only a few bucks...
My friend runs a Motorola thats on 1900 and he seems to be ok in this area so it might not be that big of an issue, and mainly I'll be able to use my phone back home in europe where most of it is 900.

Edit: Is there going to be a SE 750 model for the 850 market soon ?

If they live up here, and rarely travel out of the area, it's VERY likely they would never go off 850. There is NO 850 on Edge Wireless, they are a PCS Carrier, and have no licenses in the 850 band, and are the ONLY provider of GSM in the areas I listed. I understand this area, you probably don't

Now, that said, Edge Wireless only sells phones with 850 now, I'm sure that has much to do with them being a Cingular Affiliate, and with the buyout of AT&T. Before AT&T Wireless got bought by Cingular, Edge was an AT&T WS Affiliate, and almost all of the phones they sold had no 850. AT&T WS sold phones without 850 for a fair amount of time as well.

I never said having a non 850 phone was good, I only said in THIS area, a person would be fine without it.

so then are you saying, if you buy a phone without the 850, its basically just like having t-mobiles service since it only runs on the 1900 band?

Posted by: nskgti23

No, because TMobile's network was designed as a 1900 only network. Networks designed for 850 spacing perform much differently. If you have 1900 overlay on a 850 network spacing you will have huge coverage gaps.

Yeah, I will. And you DO know where we, as in the OP and I, are right? CA...where T-Mobile uses Cingular equipment. Yeah...? And I've been using this phone for like a month both in Nor Cal and So Cal? Okay, good.

Any you do realize that Cingular is moving EVERYONE to the "Blue" network in Cali where you will be on an 850/1900 network. Have fun when the switch happens because your coverage will suck...

Yeah, and like I said, I'll have a new phone by then. Don't worry, if they do it tomorrow and my coverage sucks, I'll just go back to a 850 phone. No big deal.

My wife has the K700i. When she wanted a new phone I told her to get a phone w/ 850Mhz but there was no somewhat high end SE phone w/ 850 so she got that. Now she complains sometimes that she doesn't get good signal inside buildings. When we're out together my phone gets full signal and she has less. She now has the Treo 650 and is much happier because it has 850 and EDGE.

Hey I'm in Sunnyvale too and trying to get my hands on the K750i. I'd rather pick it up locally then purchase it online. I went to this shop in a mall tonight in San Jose. They wanted $425 for one which is way to much compared to EBay. Plus it was silver and I want the black one. Any suggestions on where to purchase?

No, I havn't looked at all, didn't even know they sold it here hehe. But so far the best I have found is howardforums.com.com which comes out to 415$ after shipping, which is probbably better since you will probably have to pay tax on the 425.

foneart at clement and 9th, in SF
or world communications (mobile communications) on 11th and clement.

asian dealers usually have horrid return policies though. I am off to try to get coverage switched to cingular. T-mobile didn't cut the mustard anywhere outside SF city.

Chrisk,

I'm next door in Mountain View. Can you tell us which shop in Sunnyvale carries the K750i?
