First off. I am getting an sony ericsson s700 soon but I have been reading these forums that people are requesting firmware upgrades for their phones. Is there a particular firmware that a ericsson s700 needs for more features? Also I was wondering where you can download firmware for my phone or any of these sony ericsson phones?

Also I have been wondering about Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick Pro Duo. I know the s700 can only support Memory Stick Duo but the k750i can support both. What is the main difference between the two? What are the advantages of the Memory Stick Pro Duo.

If someone can help me answer these questions I will be grateful.

Hey, Sony actually posted a section on their site specifically for updating your phone. It's in the Support - Update Service section. I've supplied a link to it for you, the only catch is you may need to buy one of their SyncStations like the DSS-20 or DSS-25, they run around $50 but you may find a deal on eBay. All-in-all that should keep your s700 running smoothly.

As for the memory, the s700 was one of the earlier phones to the market in its class and thus didn't have Pro Duo support. Newer phones like the k750 or the higher end w800 will support them however. The primary difference between the two is storage capacity, the Memory Stick Duo goes up to 128MB which is sufficient for most applications, but the Pro Duo reaches heights of 1GB in standard configuration, or 2GB in the high speed configuration but don't you worry about that one... it's still over $400. Yah, that's right $449 for a freakin' memory card. I digress, the Pro cards are also a bit faster than the regular Duos, but I have had no issues with mine. The 128MB Duo cards are cheap enough (~$45) you can afford to buy a few if need be.

I hope that answers your questions, if not write back. I hope you enjoy your s700, I know I love mine. I bought mine in Hong Kong in November '04 and still get tonnes of comments on it.

Peace out!

Steve

Hey thanks for replying. I have a few questions.
I have a question about the firmware. Is it necessary to update it or will it run fine with just the firmware that comes standard in a brand new box? I don't know if I feel like spending 50 bucks for those SyncStations like the DSS-20 or DSS-25 just to update it.

Also Ive read that someone else had a problem when they tried to put in a 128MB memory stick in the phone. I heard thats the maximum capacity you can put on those MS Memory Stick Duo sticks. He said that the phone had a problem recognizing it. Is there something in particular that you need to do to the phone in order to accept it.

Lastly does it matter what brand of memory I can buy if I want to upgrade to 128MB. What I mean is that does it have to be Memory Stick Duo or only sony brand or can it be any brand as long as its 128MB or less and not memory stick pro duo. Thanks.

Hey Eric, my s700 is still running on the stock firmware and I only have a few little problems, nothing detrimental. Once in a while it mixes up the names in the call history, so it may for example say that I called Trevor when infact it was Amy. The number is correct, but it has mixed up the names. It only does this once in a while, and took a few months to develop. And the only other thing is that the random option for the mp3 player will do just that and randomly turn itself on. I've put up with these things as they are very minor and are not too frequent.

I suppose I should add that the Magic word feature is quite buggy, but that's to be expected given what it does. When in handsfree all you do is say your 'Magic word' and it activates voice dialing for total handsfree operation. I use it when riding my bike, but it's too touchy and apparently thinks that when a forklift honks its horn it actually said 'chicken leg' which is my Magic word. Hey who knows, maybe in forklift language it did.
So you don't really need to update at all.

As for the memory, 128MB is the max that the s700 will take and you got it, not Pro Duo. As far as I know the manufacturer of the memory doesn't matter, I've used official Sony and SanDisk brands in 32, 64, and 128MB formats with no issues. So long as it's Memory Stick Duo it should work fine, but I can't speak for some of the lesser known offshore brands, they may be more touchy. There isn't a big price difference between the major brands, so if want to be sure there will be no issues you should go with official Sony brand cards, but like I say I've had no issues with my SanDisk cards either.

Peace,

Steve

My friend has the same unit but different problem - "phone battery charging indicator".

According to her, when charging the unit (at night) she noticed 1. No blinking red light and 2. When fully charged the indicator says "charging" still (shouldn't suppose to say "charging done" or whatever?). And the following day all bars are gone already, the indicator shows the battery needs re-charging. For curiousity sake, she left it that way and was able to use the phone for several days without charging.

Any idea what's wrong? Will SonyEricsson's service upgrade solve the problem?

I bought the unit here in California and sent it to the Philippines for her use.

Your reply will be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Best regards,

Ernie
