Hi,
I'm new to the world of hi tech mobile phones. my last mobilel was a 4 year old sanyo. I got the sharp 903sh today and have been playing around with it, but the manual is in japanese. i thought i could find a pdf manual download somewhere but i haven't been able to find one yet. I have been trying to make ring tones out of songs i have. i have been cutting songs to about 10 second bites and converting them to aac files in itunes. then transferring them via bluetooth to my phone. at first the phone tells me that it doesn't recognize the file type (i was told it should by the vodafone worker) although i can send it and play it on my mobile no troubles. BUT i get a file error when i try to place the song as ring tone. Is what i'm trying to do illegal? technically speaking it could be seen as a public broadcast, but it is music i have purchased and using for my own interest. grey area. is that why it won't work or is the aac size too big for a ring tone? do i have to save it as another type of file? and if so what software should i use to do that.

thanks for any help.

ps. i live in japan. i don't have a hacked phone.

for it to work as a ringtone.. u might have to download it via wap.. or it might need to be a DRM mp3/aac file for it to work. from our experience.. we can send ringtones to the phoen via the memory card.. or from wap.. this is from using the sharp 902

have you tried converting it to a mmf file?

I've also heard that the sound file needs to be in the phone's memory, not on the memory card, to be used as a ringtone. I know for Chaku-Uta it definitely has to be in phone memory and not the memory card.

yah it definitely has to be stored on the phone memory.

I haven't even put my mini sd card into my phone yet. i have been saving these sound bites as AAC (m4a) files but it doesn't seem to be working. I reckon that converting them to mmf is the way to go, but where do i get a proggie that does that? i searched some forums and found one, but it was an exe file so i couldn't install in on my mac.

try using the foobar aplication and extracting an actual .aac file from the m4a that itunes makes.. hope that works, i'd really like that phone

thanks for the advice though. i have come across plenty of progs that do this stuff but they are all windows only. mmm...my just have to give up.

Half the quickstart guide is in English, there's an abbreviated English section at the back of the full manual, and the UK English manual will be online shortly at vodafone.jp, as mentioned in the guide. Also, the utility software can be installed in English.

speed69, do you mind taking some pictures and posting them here? sorry for this offtopic request, but i'm interested in the quality of the phone. thanks in advance.

bushcat, the part of the guidebook in english is lacking to say the least. very function oriented only. i actually haven't tried to install the software yet. and didn't see the part about the manual being online soon. i will check that out. thanks.

To be honest, i got the phone because of the camera. i have been holding out for a 3meg camera on a phone for over a year now. the phone is a little too big for my liking and the design is pretty standard.Let's face it, sharp aren't known for their imaginative and inspired designed. sit this next to the latest toshiba and you will see what i mean. i acutally wanted the toshiba but it just didn't have the specs i wanted. i shouldn't complain though as it will certainly do the job. in terms of usability: the buttons are nice, but the d-pad is too far embedded in the case. The build is solid, but the camera controls on the side are clunky and very small. i'm yet to test the camera out but i hear it's pretty good.

sorry, i'm not sure why there are no pics. i will try again.

U gotta host it on some other website such as www.photobucket.com and then paste the link in the [img][/img] tag.

Speed69, if you think the manual's bad, the software will reduce you to tears...

Posted by: speed69

well i sort of wish it could reduce me to tears but i can't actually use it! it seems that it's all exe. files and being a mac user nothing on the disc was usable. not that any of it seemed useful, but still you think they would make it mac compatible...aren't vodefone the biggest mobile phone suppliers in the world? now that i have used the phone i am impressed with the camera, but the buttons are still a little on the small side and the whole flash thing doesn't seem to be logical. and where is the external screen?!?! i use my mobile as a time piece as well. it's a real hassle to open it up to check the time. i know you can turn the screen around but that isn't very functional either. bad design. apart from that it's rather good.

most of the phones on the market which provides communicating or transfer software are not made by the phone manufacturer, but by third party companies, paid by the phone manufacturer to reduce their overheads, mac computers are not widely used, although they are great computers.
phone companies are not willing to spend money on mac softwares for these phone because there is a bigger market for microsoft software.

I have the 903SH.
I downloaded some ringtones from the sticky at the head of this forum. Then I used the handset manager software that was included and transfered them from my PC to the handset via Bluetooth and they seem to be working fine so far.

Posted by: kms-lai

they should work fine, they are mmf ringtone
