3+ MP barrier for camera phones?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Will Cingular be the first to break the 3MP barrier for phones in the US. I'm not talking imports that you can buy and bring over. I'm talking a company offered phone.

Just a thought....

I'm gonna say yes.

that's what I was going to say. As much as I hate Sprint (for NUMEROUS reasons) they ARE usually on top of the features game, bluetooth aside.

Sprint were the first to get 1mp camera phone

Sprint is supposed to get a variant of this Samsung by the end of this year. Sprint was also the first (in the US) with a 1MP and 2MP camera-phone, so I would think that Sprint would beat everyone again. VZW will actually beat Cingular with a 2MP camera-phone; the Samsung A970 is expected to be released next month.

Not sure...

then I think tmobile quickly followed suit with the v205...my first camera phone and my second phone ever haha

Actually I believe it was ATT that offered the first camera capable phone in the US and also the first color screen phone. The Industry breaking Sony Ericsson T68. That phone was legendary in paving the way for what we have now in the lines of bluetooth, color screens and camera capabilities in my opinion.

Question: why does everyone care about megapixels when what camera phones really need are better lenses! I've seen pics from 1mp cameraphones that are worse than the 640x480 pics from digital cameras a over decade old!

I'm pretty sure it was Sprint. I just don't remember the model number, but it was a Sanyo. Anyway, the T68i wasn't a camera phone in the US; it just had a camera attached, which was sold separately, so it was a camera capable phone, as opposed to as camera phone, meaning on integrated into the phone.

I agree. I absolutely don't care myself. I was just answering some questions. Anyone who understand cameras know that mega-pixels affect resolution/size, but have very little to do with the actual picture quality. Picture quality is affected more by the lens, the senor, and the way these things are integrated/executed/implemented.

I would be more concerned on the optical resolution than mega pixel. Since phones are too tiny I do not thing they will have a chance of making an outstanding camera until someone perfects or near perfects miniturization of optics, which is probably near imposible.

These are probably the same people that goes out and buys the higher mega pixel camera rather than the higher optical resolution and complain that their pictures are too pixalated at farther distance and wonder why.

who the hell needs a 3MP camera phone yet alone a 7MP camera phone...?? My 3MP digital camera works just fine and takes fine pictures. And how many of you guys actually print out your digital prints to full resolution?

you dont print them out at full resolution, you'd be nuts.

when they get printed out, they will look so much sweeter at 8 1/2 by 11 or small 4x6 shots

Actually, i think that the first camera phone that Sprint offered was the Samsung n400 which had a separate camera that you could use and then hook up to the phone to send pics. So, that is basically the same as the SE.
