Cingular out of stock of 6230's

In Atlanta, at least. I called to XBM my 6230 (for the 3rd time, no less) and they told me they're out. They offered to "upgrade" me to a Moto V551..eww... No chance of getting something else, like a 6620, he told me..

Anyone know anything about this? The rep also mentioned there's about 7000 on backorder...

I Guess the CSR from lockline wasnt joking..a few days ago when i recieved a se s710a as an replacement instead of my 6230b..i was told that the 6230b was bieng discontinued..so i guess that applys for xbm and cingular as well..this only confirms that they likely will be replacing it with another model..possibly a flip phone..but who knows..cingular sometimes plays the magic trick..one minute its forsale next day its not...we shall see in weeks time. in addition a Motorola V551 is in no way a comparable model for the 6230b..no expandable memory,no class 10 edge,no mp3 player..etc...since you already have an 6230B which you wish to XBM it..you would be better off sending it to a Nokia repair center, and they can upgrade the firmware..etc..otherwise you out of luck if you want to get another 6230b from cingular.

call XBM back and see if they can pull from the Fort Worth warehouse. I called my 6230 a week ago last thursday, called at 5pm, had my new phone by noon the next day! (Abilene's only 2.5 hrs from Fort Worth) so they had them in stock then. Perhaps they can order it from another warehouse.

Making way for the Motorola SLVR?

I hope so.

6230 is not being discontinued but it is being pulled of the shelfs for a little while... there was a software problem and they finally decided to pull it back and get the phones reflashed... it should be back on shelfs in about 1-2 months...

I thought they already did this at the beginning of the summer?

Posted by: spartacus13b

that was a scheduled one... this one they really did not anticipate...

1-2 months ? ggeez..by the time the 6682 may be out..well time for me to start preparing myself for the 6682..

Posted by: ncvaco

This is likely due to the FW version 5.35 freezing problem.

Heh..I should ask them to give me a s710a...or at least a 6620.

I'll try that as well. Unfortunately, high school starts tomorrow for me (ugh, why do we in the South start SO FRIGGIN EARLY?!?) so I'm not sure if I'll have time...definitely give it a shot, though.

wait, does anyone know the official reason for the pulling of the 6230b's? well, actually the official problem with the firmware?

Posted by: CIAlias

Oh I hope there's no issue. I just ordered one from amazon.com for ~$211.00 shipped.

Well, I don't know what the official reason is, but it's really cause the Cingular f/w f-ed the phone to hell...restarts, lockups, BT bugs, WAP pages loading funny...ugh...

Hope you don't get the 5.34 firmware.

Posted by: JebusChrist

hmmm, ****, so they did end up finding 5.34 to be buggy eh? ****.

Posted by: CIAlias

oh no, I did get 5.34 FW. Is this on all phones?

Actually, Amazon has a 30 day return policy. I guess I'll just use it if I need to. Do you know if these problems will be noticable pretty quickly?

Posted by: Hirby

Well I just got the 6230 (5.34 firmware) 2 weeks ago and it has been working fine. Played with every feature constantly without problems (no lockups or other problems). I am using it on a Blue account, with Blue settings though, so I don't know if that makes a difference. Are there any specific problems to look for or manually reproduce for testing?

Posted by: ItalianAngel831

I had 2 of them and they both froze and etc. so i moved to the moto v551 have to say it was a great phone until i called in and got blue prefrence now it sux. and i got to go 2 years with this phone.

Posted by: dobiegillis

I haven't used 5.34 personally but a friend has one and she has been exchanging it every 30 days. Unfortunately for her she bought it at an authorized retailer so she has to drive like an hour to get there instead of being able to go to the nearest corporate store. When she emailed me about the problem (freezing/constant scrolling so bad you can't even turn the phone off--she has to remove the battery) I did some research here on HoFo and came up with several threads complaining about those problems on 5.34. I had her check the fw version of her phone and you can guess the rest. I recommended she send it off to iunlock to get the firmware upgraded and unbranded for $35 but she is fighting with Cingular instead. Waste of time IMO. Way to go Cingular.

Posted by: CIAlias

I hope I don't have any problems. I love this phone! It's my first bluetooth phone, and I can't believe the ease in transferring pics from my iBook to the phone! I felt like I was on Alias.

Posted by: CIAlias

Well I think I discovered a problem, but I'm not sure if it's a problem, or much ado about nothing.

When my phone goes to it's screen saver, it's normal, but when I press a button to bring it back to stand by screen, it quickly has a weird little screen...

As you can see, it all happens in less than a second.

So should I just send it to iUnlock and have them update the fw for it? I'm not sure if it will lead to more problems.

Plus, the only reason I got the phone was because I'm going to use it to tether my iBook. And I'm sure there are cheaper phones that I can do that with, but I love Nokias, they're the only phones that I'm able to make calls from in house with.

Posted by: dobiegillis

Well if it works for your needs I don't see why you need to upgrade the firmware. However I'm very happy with my upgrade that fixed a number of irritating bugs.

Posted by: walkguru

i just got a new one from a walmart connect center, for 79.99.

the store is the only one with this low price, and yes 2 year.

Posted by: nwok2u

Where is it located and will any other walmarts have this low price in the near future. Id love to get my hands on a 6230 for the lowest possible price. Any suggestions.

the operator specific loads are not made by the operator, they are made by the handset vendor. It is the vendor's job to make it work properly.

Hm, I had no idea...thought it was the reverse, actually. Thanks for that, IHAP.

Yeah and I'd bet my lunch that the operator specific loads aren't planned far enough in advance to do adequate testing. Then the operator pressures the manufacturer to rush to market a product that has serious flaws noone knows about. Of course I'm not saying the operator has to take full blame, but it is pretty sad that these companies (operator and manufacturer) keep releasing equipment that doesn't work right. Haven't they heard of six sigma??

Posted by: djfusion

So now it sounds like this phone is being discontinued...what do all the folks having these problems do from here? Should I call XBM and ask for a 6620 or s710a?

you'd be incorrect. The manufacturer is given the specs they need to achieve each year. If they can't, that's their problem

Man, why can't everybody be like Motorola? They are the epitome of meeting the operators (Cingular) requirements for quality and performance.

See, I just went through the XBM for my 6230 (vibrate stopped working - thread in other forum) and they offered me eier a V551 or a Siemans S66. When I asked about getting an S710a, even if it meant I had to pay extra for it, they said "No way" bascially. That's weird that you guys got the offer and I didn't, but then again we all know how CSM's are.

I had the same thing happen to me last night. I called CSR and they told me that they could offer me a v551 (of course I said NO). Then she said that I need to work with NOKIA to get my phone fixed.

Another one of my friends had the same issue, and got a new 6682 out of the bargain. Guess thats not the offer anymore :-( The CSR Rep mentioned that maybe my friend had 2 Exchanges instead of my 1 preveously with the 6230!!

OMG... so a third phone has to break before I can get a phone that works?!?!

Gonna try my luck with Nokia. Wish me luck. ;-)

I mentioned this in the other thread, but I did take the S66. Other than mp3's (which is the big downfall for me) and EDGE, it did everything I needed it to do. Tradeoff was that I got a 1.3MP camera out of it.

Last week I picked up an S710a off eBay and sold the S66. The S710a is way better for my needs, but for the most part the S66 is a decent phone. Now, that's not in any way saying that I agree with XBM's choices on this situation. I'm eligible for an upgrade in January, and plan on picking up a new phone anyway so if I ever have a problem again I won't have to deal with XBM. If I had a backup, I would have worked through Nokia to get my 6230 fixed, but having no backup and needing the phone for work purposes - shame on me, I guess. In the end, my situation worked out, but YMMV.
