Restoring VW 8910 phonebook and downloads

Lost my 8910 and got another 8910. I have a recent full dump (using bitpim) of the old phone. I need to restore my phonebook and if possible a couple of aps I downloaded (both were pay once, not subscription or expiring DLs). I have seen lots of threads on uploading ringtones and pics and attempts at games. I have also read the warnings on how fragile the firmware is on these phones. What is the safest way to try and upload these? Connect to the phone and replace the whole file structure with the saved one similar to individual ringtones or wallpapers? Do each seperately? Can I just do the brew directory and the phbk directory or does the phone have vital info for apps in places other than the brew directory? Does anyone have an idea on the odds of locking the phone up? The apps are minor, I can spend the $12 to download again if need be, but I need my phonebook and I don't have anything to read the saved file so I can do it manually.

Pretty sure the backup only backs up NVM (NVR in computerese) meaning Non Volatile Memory. That would be what was on your phone when it was brand new. Volatile Memory stores whatever you put on it either through use or by upload. "Volative" being the operative word.

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

When I browse the zip file I can see the different files for the apps, Nineball and Tetris. I can also view the phbk file with a text editor and make out some of the info. It just occured to me to try a hex editor to view the phbk and see if the info is readable under the ascii. I'll try that when I get home. I also finally found a post related to uploading the phbk on the 8900 and 8910 I need to try when I get home. Just not sure if the bitpim backup will work with the program used to restore.

to get your games, you'll have to buy them from the GetItNow service... but if you call up *611 and tell them that you had to get a new phone, they will credit your account the GIN fees...
