quick q: can you run pda functions + wmp without an inserted sim?

The short answer is no. I just tried by removing my SIM and firing up the phone. Once it starts the screen shows "SIM Failure" on the top line and "Invalid or missing SIM card" on the second line.

In this state the only button that works is the power button.

sorta...

you can put the phone in 'flight mode' and reboot it w/o a SIM and it'll work...but if you then take it out of 'flight mode', you'll get the SIM error and the phone locks up.

that does still require that you have a SIM to begin with, unless you can still connect via AS and set 'flight mode' in the registry and reboot...
