This Is Not An Sk3! :-)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: jgeorge

Hi friends and rumormongers!

This post is a handy-dandy quick visual reference guide to the JPG that someone just mailed you and said it was an SK3. It's not, trust me. Chances are high that the image your friend just emailed you is one of the three below. :-)

NOT A SIDEKICK 3, #1:

THIS IS NOT AN SK3! It's an MDA-IV smartphone from T-Mobile Germany. It's a PocketPC phone and while it's very cool and very Sidekick-looking, it's not a Sidekick.

Source: Engadget (link)

Availability: Not available in the US for the forseeable future since it uses 3G which T-Mobile currently doesn't support.

NOT A SIDEKICK 3, #2:

THIS IS NOT AN SK3! It's a Photoshop representation of what a hiptop.com user (and a skilled Photoshop user no doubt) wanted the SK2 to look like when people were speculating about the SK2. It's from Feb 2004, long before the SK2 came out so it's most certainly not an SK3.

Source: hiptop.com (link)

Availability: None. this is a Photoshop image and isn't, wasn't, and never will be a real phone.

NOT A SIDEKICK 3, #3:

THIS IS NOT AN SK3! It's a Samsung SPH-M7000 smartphone from Korea. It runs Windows Mobile, and is a CDMA phone (not GSM like Sidekicks are). While this device is a clear winner in the "Sidekick clone" category, it's NOT a Sidekick.

Source: phonemag.com (link)

Availability: This is a CDMA-2000 network device, which currently only works in Korea. It's not available in the US and I don't know that Samsung has any plans to make it available. It will not work on US-based CDMA networks (like Verizon) and will not work on GSM networks (like T-mobile).

Thank You. Let's finally set this straight.

Posted by: Chinasaur

You might have to include the Nokia 9300/9500 as people might confuse them as well.

Good idea though JG.

Posted by: jgeorge

I actually wanted to add the LG one last night but wouldn't you know I didn't have a copy of the pic when I went to look for it.

NOT A SIDEKICK 3, #4:

THIS IS NOT AN SK3! It's a QTek 9100 (also known as an HTC Wizard) phone from Norway. It runs Windows Mobile OS (obviously) and is most definitely not a Sidekick.

Source: Engadget (link)

Availability: Norway. Since the phone is EDGE/UMTS capable it may work in the US but it's not known if it will be made available.

NOT A SIDEKICK 3, #5:

THIS IS NOT AN SK3! To be honest, I don't know the exact model of this device but it looks similar to an LG VX-9800 and may represent an older model of this phone. Note the demo screen playing Grand Tourismo 3, not a well known game title for the Sidekick.

The last one is a Korean model that was shown at CES, very cool and basically could only play a game on it while there.

and the first ppc you showed is the HTC Universal to offer WM 5.0

America is always behind on technology. By the time we get something the rest of the world has moved on to something else.

A lot of it has to do with the economies of scale. It's far easier for T-Mobile Germany to roll out technology in that country than it is for any carrier in the USA to roll out the same technology, if for no other reasons than the massively larger geographical area and larger number of towers that would require upgrades.

Joe

Posted by: braindead5400

It also has to do with a lower demand in the American market place. Super high end expensive phones don't sell well

Posted by: AarOnLineSkII

Thank you for clearing that up for all those guys who keep saying this and that phone is the next Sk. maybe they'll take notes of this to not keep spreading rumors around.

Posted by: JMillion

i was sittin arguin w/ 2 pplz over the 3rd phone 2day. lmao

Posted by: Kabuk1

Yeah, we don't get many cool phones here b/c Americans are some cheap mofos. I'm shocked they even released the Treo here. I still see all kinds of rich looking people talking on old green-screen Nokias or the obvious 'free phone' they got with their plan. These simple people want free phones & won't pay for a nice one. Guess I'm the odd one out in this country, I'd obviously be willing to pay for the technology the rest of the world has.

Instead of starting a new thread, I suppose this question goes with this sticky.

I was at our local cell phone store with my sister the other day, and she inquired about buying a SideKick 2. The T-Mobile representative advised against it, explaining the SideKick 3 will be out in the near future (but said no more). What is the SideKick 3, how is it better than the SideKick 2, and when exactly is it coming out?

Posted by: jgeorge

That tmo rep is a fool for killing an SK2 sale by telling you to wait for a device that doesn't exist.

Buy an SK2. They'll be around for a long time.

Interestingly, when my wife spoke to a TMO rep last week, she was told that the SKIII would be out by Christmas. I founf that pretty interesting, considering I have seen absolutely NOTHING about it here, or any other phone forum.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMM. .

I hear this a lot from Tmo sales reps. I don't know why they all think this is true. I can't believe that T-Mo would allow their reps to kill a current sale on a product for one that doesn't exist yet.

Do the math:

1) The first time anyone referenced the SK2 online was in January 2004. The president of Danger flashed his prototype at an electronics show in Paris and all the cellphone forums/blogs picked it up overnight.
2) The FCC published an approval for a new device submitted by Danger in April 2004.
3) The device was shipped in September 2004 in limited quantities and retail quantities were available in October for the Christmas 2004 shopping season.

So it's now October 2005, nobody's seen a "real" pic of any new device, Danger isn't flashing prototypes to spur interest, the FCC doesn't show any new approvals, and its HIGH time to have retail quantities of a new device shipping out in time for Christmas shopping.

I'm certainly not holding my breath to have one of these in the next 2 months. the numbers just don't add up.

Hey Joe,

I'm not going to disagree with anything you said - my biggest issue is your point before "Do the math". WHY would ANY salesperson potentially kill a sale that they can make today for something that MAY HAPPEN in the future is way beyond me.

That's my point too - I would think that T-mo would be smacking their reps pretty hard to not try to go out of their way to kill a sale for what's essentially vaporware at this point.

I mean, first rule of sales is to not sell what you don't have. The SK2 is a hot device, it's going to get hotter with the new OS update coming out.

The only reason I can think of reps using this tactic is that a) the SK2 is hard to keep in stock at the moment and they may not HAVE one to sell (thus they may not be able to make a sale "today", and b) (I hear) the limited edition (black) SK2 is coming out in time for Christmas and this may be the "SK3" that they're trying to push. It's rumoured to have a MUCH higher pricetag than the current device.

But it ain't a SK3.

AMEN BROTHER! thats tru i think that the limited edition is what they mean by the SK3 but as u said no one at danger knows at all of the SK3 the FCC knows nothing so that means that its A. very secretive or B. non existing.... but yea like u said i find it odd that a t mo sales person would tell some one no to buy a sk2 because the sk3 is commin out... wen i got my 3rd sk2 they told me that n this was about 2 weeks ago....

In the Cargo Magazine, they said that the Black Sidekick 2 will be $399 with new activation. There better be some serious features for the price to be upgraded to $399. Thats an extra $150 difference from the current price.

If an SK3 were coming out anytime soon, the FCC would have documents listed on their website from Danger. The most recent documents submitted by Danger were from November 2004. Here is a link to the test pictures they submitted.
https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/...tive_or_pdf=pdf

You can go to the FCC's governemtn website yourself and search. You will see NOTHING was submitted for any new device not released in the US for Danger.

It might come out next year to take advantage of T-Mobile's EDGE network.

They do not have to notify the FCC if the hardware didn't change. The new black HT might just be a marketing thing, like a hiptop being endorsed by god knows who, likely someone in the hiphop scene or something. That whole black HT thing made people talk, so they probably succeded here...

You know, just Sean John clothes sells for more money than your regular clothes.

Even if its the same rag.

Posted by: PaisanNYC

So if they make a new model number just for a housing color change thats fine. I dont see why they would. Look at the razr. They came out with the razr black. it wasnt the razr 2 or the new razr v3x.
People are just speculating and wishing too much. An SK3 isnt going to happen anytime soon.

Posted by: jgeorge

If it's just a case/color/design change then the FCC doesn't have to approve. The FCC approves the circuit and specifications, just changing the case color or case plastics (as long as it doesn't demonstrably change the RF properties of the device) won't require new FCC paperwork.

I believe the LE black SK2 is being called the "Mr. Cartoon" Edition SIdekick named after a famous(?) tattoo artist.

So yeah, it's a SK2 with someone else's name on it. Like Sean John, it makes it more expensive and more exclusive but not really any better.

Joe

Posted by: yis903unposubl

just speculation, but could they have delayed the SKIII so it can take advantage of T-Mo's 3G network (due 2008)?

Posted by: dafabolous12k3

thanks for clearin evrything up.. since the sidekick 2 really hans tbeen out THAT long i really dont see a sidekick III coming out any time soon...especially as soon as xmas

This is also not an SK3!

That's Verizon's new LG VX-9800 phone. LG's answer to the SK. Definitely NOT an SK3!

OK - these 2 are on the top of my list. VZW wins in coverage (you know "the network"). TMO wins on price. Yeah - maybe this is - you get what you pay for.

Actually, the way I would describe what I'm looking for is a "personal Blackberry". No corporate mail. Personal mail, web browsing, IM'ing. Would like music capability (maybe even enough to wait for the Q - with DRM). Oh yeah - also for a phone.

Any comments - pros, cons of the SKII, or the 9800?

THANKS!

I just took a look at it. IDK what to think. With tmobile just releasing 2 LE sidekick 2's, it doesn't seem to make sense to release sidekick 3 that close.

Bad link. All I get is this message:

It may be that the topic you were linking to has been deleted by the mods over there for some reason.

Bottom line folks: Until it is officially announced over at Hiptop.Com (which, judging by the launch of the SKII/HT², it would be announced there at least a month or 2 in advance of the launch at retail), there is NO Sidekick III/Hiptop³! That's the whole point of this topic!

the mods over at hiptop are being very quick about getting these pics off the site. All previous SK3 "pics" were just locked with a message saying what the phone auctually was. That didnt happen this time. they were quickly and quietly deleted. Insted of being a SK3, could this be more along the lines of a SK2.5? A few upgrades, but still basically as Sk2?

Heck if I know! Since the topic's gone, I never saw the pictures. Did anyone bother to save them to their PC? If so, post them here!

I know about the deleted topics cause I read them last night. Once someone posted a new thread thinking they were the first one to post the news, the Mods quickly deleted it. Keep checking hiptop.com. You will see what I mean about them removing them immediately.

Being a sidekick 2 owner I was happy when I heard there would be a sidekick 3 but my sister busted my bubble (She use to work for T-mobile Corporate). The sidekick 3 everyone is speaking of is actually NOT a sidekick at all but it has the features of the sidekick and is 10X better. There are two phones that reps at T-mobile are saying are sidekick "like". They are the HTC Wizard (set to be out in mid to late Jan) and The Motorola Q (Also slated for sometime in Jan) Both of these phones do the same thing as the sidekick but on a larger scale (The HTC wizard is MS Windows based) My sister told me that because both of these phones are geared towards the 30-45 age market and not the 18-25 age market there are plans for a Sidekick 3 but not anytime soon.

i bet as soon as the sk2 LE's are gone.. the sk3's come out

That pic is old. This photo is from 2 months ago. Nobody can confirm if this is the Sk3. Most don't think it is.

I saw a picture online with the device powered on and it looked like the similar danger software. i work for a certain company that sell certain products (think about it) and i there is no official product information released regarding a SK3. Internaly we thought it was going to be Christmas of '05 but even then that was only speculation. Now, there has been internal emails sent out regarding that yes there will be a version 3, what it is no one knows, but it should be released about OCT (4th quarter) of 2006. Sorry if that seems like a long time away, most "info" that gets out is just consumer speculation or miss informed employees. My personal opinion is that they released the LE sidekicks to cover the typical Oct release date that we saw in '04 and were hoping for in '05... Who knows

It's very possible that back in 2003-2004 they could have made mulitple prototypes but obviously only chose one. When Danger released the SK2, i'm pretty sure that the company wasn't doing too well. Now becaues the 2 was so much more reliable than the original, the company has a lot more capabilities. I've seen that pic of the black and silver "Sk-3" and i think it was an abandoned prototype... sorry guys.

Working for the company that sells this product, they definetly are keeping things under wraps. Expect a huge marketing campaign when it does reveal (remember OCT-'06)

That picture dates from October 2005. There are more recent, and better, photos out.

Next time, searching in the Danger forum BEFORE you post would be a very good idea.

Welcome to last year!

I just want to chime in I personally have recieved an email with expected phone relaes dates and the skIII is scheduled for end of Q4. Anything earlier is not on record.... but who knows... seems like HIPTOP has been keeping it under wraps.. heck every phone had a pic on it and then its features under it on the email and the SKIII was all blank.. friggin crazy!

Posted by: terryjohnson16

I think the FCC has already approved the SK3, its just that they don't want a repeat of what happened when the SK2 was going to come out. Once the FCC leaked that the SK2 had been approved, pics of the SK2 started to become official, so people didn't want to buy the Sidekick Color since they knew the SK2 was coming. That was back in 2004.
