Use old AT&T Nokia 6560 on Cingular?

A friend has a Nokia 6560 that she has been using with the former AT&T.

She is trying to get a new Cingular plan and the salesperson is telling her she needs a new phone.

I'm hoping someone can save me researching the technologies they use and provide a quick answer: Is the salesman right, or is this the typical sales technique.

The label in the battery compartment says, Nokia 6560 rh-25.

Also, while I'm at it, he impression is that her 'AT&T' service quality is getting worse: More dropped calls, worse reception, etc. Does that sound familiar?

Thanks in advance,
guanxi

Seeing as the nokia 6560 is tdma, you would need a new phone. It may be getting worse because they are upping everything to gsm instead of TDMA.

It depends. In some areas of the US, TDMA service is being phased out a bit faster than in others. I have a 6560 in southern California and my coverage improved just a tad bit since the merger. I thought Cingular sold a bunch of new GSM plans to many older TDMA custumers and traffic has been reduced on that network in my area.

Unfortunately, your friend's only choice is to get a new GSM phone with a new service.
