The Official 8915 Info Thread (Snapper)

Ok, what do we know so far?

http://www.virginmobileusa.com/cata...do?skuId=VM8915

Yeah, that's what most of us know, but there's more.

Audiovox doesn't seem to have the phone listed on their site yet. It would be likely be CDM8915VM if it were there. Their online catalog doesn't include the model number in the url, so it may be there, or it might not be.

I thought about looking on Curitels site, and found three suspects, one of which is obviously the 8910:

http://www.curitel.com/english/product/cdma/TX-115C.asp

An interesting sidenote: the FCC ID of the 8910 includes "TX-110C", yet the TX-110C would seem to be the 8610 (It has no camera).

http://www.curitel.com/english/product/cdma/TX-110C.asp

But I digress, we're interested in the Snapper here.

So, looking at the other Curitel candidates, I think that by process of elimination, the Snapper is the following phone:

http://www.curitel.com/english/product/cdma/CX-880C.asp

The other remaining candidate would be this CDMA 450Mhz phone:

http://www.curitel.com/english/prod...450/HX-550C.asp

It's a safe bet it's the CX-880C, but that didn't get me any FCC ID or confirmation that it's the OEM Snapper, so I did a general Hyundai Curitel search on the FCC site, and guess what.....I found it, and a Verizon model too.

The Snapper:

Silver too....I bet that will be on Virgin's site, while the blue one is in stores.

https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/w...c_id=PP4TX-215A

Verizon 8915:

https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/w...cc_id=PP4TX-215

I also ran across this phoneareana page which has more Verizon 8915 photos:

http://phonearena.com/htmls/UTStarc...one-p_1211.html

Yeah, it's not like it blatantly says that the Snapper is louder than the Flasher (Actually, I didn't go through all the test reports yet!), but it's a good start to a thread.

Posted by: TakenAback

Well it's out now, so I wondered if anyone could add anymore information to this.

Posted by: TakenAback

Curitel has it on their site now (Not sure how long), and it's not the 880C...

It's the PN-215: http://www.curitel.com/english/product/cdma/PN-215.asp

Posted by: U_NV_ME

I just got the CDM8915VM about 2 weeks ago. It's a good phone. and the ringtones are louder then the 8910, alot of people were asking on oter forums.
I have a cable for it and have been messing around with bitpm.

This is my first time with a cable and changing ringtones and wallpaper. I'm not sure what I'm doing because the file system is different from the 8910, but not too much. I can replace ringtones, but I don't know how to update the name the phone displays. And I would realy like to add more rings to the phone but don't know how to.

If anyone else has this phone or any info pleasw post. Oh becarefull entering codes into the phone. I found one that was for battery setup or info and the phone froze up. It would just cycle the VM power up screen. Had to return it, Thank you Best buy...

Posted by: TakenAback

You say it's different. Can you post a screenshot of the file system tree fully expanded?

Posted by: JohnDough

I just got this phone. Can anyone tell me a way to download pictures to a computer? I know I will need to get a cable, Where can I get it?
will it be possible to download/Upload other things - addressbook, ringtones ect?
What software is needed?

What else can be done with this phone that the Virginmobil site doesnt tell you about?

You can upload/download ringers, images and phonebook. Just follow instructions posted in this forum for the 8910. (They're quite similar)

You'll need an 8900/8910 cable, which you can get for $8-$10 shipped, from ebay (just do a title search for 8910 cable), BitPim or QPST, and the Curitel drivers bundled with PC Sync.

Take a look at this thread for a compatible version of PC Sync:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=705666

Go to www.bitpim.org for BitPim, and search this thread for QPST:

File system is not similar at all. Look at both and you will see Easy to replace tones, hard to add new even if you duplicate the file changes VM makes when you buy a new tone.

Posted by: TakenAback

Thanks for the screenshot. (If you could do a fully expanded one, that would be even better)

Were you hoping to do the same as U NV ME?

Posted by: Fluxdragon

Here, this is as expanded as I can fit on the screen hehe. It's a long tree...

No, I can hex the names of the ones I replace, I just cant figure how to add. I duplicate the changes VM makes when I download one, and make a new directory with the same files etc.. but when I reboot phone it deletes my new folder and changes. It's like, smart or something. heh.

Posted by: Fluxdragon

Oh here is a tip concerning adding wallpapers, take a few pics with the camera, and under the camera segment of the filesystem, overwrite the pics you took (photo_003.jpg) or something, with your 480x640 jpgs. Just name your pics on your PC the same filenames and overwrite in bitpim from there. You can select cam pics as wallpaper so why replace the few you have when you can replace a bunch of lame cam pics. Yay. Halfway there, now to ringtones.. replace, easy, add, no so easy.

That's a bit of an overstatement. I've seen both, and there are clear differences, but someone could use 8910 instructions as a guide to accomplishing the same results.

For an example, here's a complete and fully expanded 8910VM fielsystem as seen in BitPim:

http://img487.imageshack.us/img487/...reenshot0xg.jpg

I did have to paste different screenshots to get that.

Hmmmm....

Are you 100% certain the overwrite has taken place? Just to be sure, I'd attempt the process with BitPim and QPST, to be sure it's the actual phone that's reversing the changes.

Posted by: Fluxdragon

Yeah, it wipes the new folders. I can watch em vanish when i have bitpim reboot the phone. I will try QPST to be certain as you advise. I was wrong about one thing, the 8910 is somewhat similar, but not enough to dupe the instructions for adding tones. I can overwrite existing, but I have not been able to add new ones. I have not seen a post on any forum or website that doesn't complain about the same thing, people all over seem only to be able to overwrite existing. Thanks for you help, I'll keep looking!

Posted by: synth7

I have this phone. This isn't about hacking it or anything, but I bet my question can be answered. As far as I know, you can only upload a picture to "My Pix" on the VM website right after you take it. Am I right in assuming this, or is it possible to upload pictures already saved on your phone?

Also, this thread and this site have really inspired me to maybe buy a cable and see what I can do.

Posted by: Fluxdragon

You can upload the pics you take to a friends e-mail address, or e-mail them to yourself at an e-mail address. But it costs 25 cents a pop. With the cable you can dump them free onto your PC, but they don't look really all that great once they are on the larger (pc) screen. The small screen on a cellphone hides the pics flaws. Its not bad for the price tho. If you want a nice High Quality digital cam tho, get the concord at walgreens for 80 bucks. Its like 3.1 megapixel insteal of the less than half a megapixel most cells have.

Still you can with the cable:

Overwrite taken pics with jpgs for free wallpapers, w/o having to wipe over the ones that come with the phone

Dump pics to PC

overwrite default ringtones with MP3 (30 seconds cuts, use Goldwave or something to cut them out, compress and boost volume). (I havent found anyone that can add new tones w/o buying them but you can buy 2 or 3 and overwrite them all with good stuff)

Posted by: TakenAback

You can grab a cable off eBay for $8-$10 shipped. Just search for "8910 cable" (same type)

Also, take a look at this thread:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=696147

Posted by: synth7

What kind of things can I do on the 8915 without a cable? Anything interesting?

Btw, I discovered you CAN pix msg a picture to My Pix, don't need to email it. Menu > 1 > 3 > highlight photo > Options > 2 (My Pix) > Ok > Send.

Posted by: U_NV_ME

Glad to see mor people with the 8915vm tring to add rings. I just got my cable back from friend so I will try more. I did also find out about over wrighting the pics you take and using them for wallpaper, alot more room. Taken I like the screen shot next time I will take mult. pics and past them together to get the full tree.

Posted by: JohnDough

OK- the cable FINALLY arrived ( over 2 weeks from end of auction) hooked it up- did bitpim all is fine - Thanks for the help.
Now I'm wondering if its possible to download and install games from somewhere VS the $6 fee for ea one from Virgin mobile?

Damn those upskirt freaks.

Posted by: Kopeke

anyone have the verizon one yet? Does it infact have a color outside screen? cuz if it does im going for that insted of the 8910 (for a family member)

Posted by: TakenAback

The outside screen looks blue, like the 8910. (from the photos I've seen)

Posted by: Ballaholic89

thats gay
they need to take it off for the "non-upskirt" people........lol

Posted by: Locke

On my 8915VM it was fairly simple to remove the shutter sound. Edit /camera/CameraState.dat and change the value of the 10th byte to 0x03. Then reboot the phone(I don't remember if it's necessary or not but it can't hurt).
I've attached my CameraState.dat for anyone who wants it. The extension was changed to .txt so I could upload it.

Now that I've contributed my bit anyone having success uploading java applications(games)?

Posted by: saasaa

I have a quick question. Not sure if it belongs here.

I recently got PN-215 for christmas which I have gathered is the same as the 8915. So does this mean if i were to buy a data cable for 8910/8915 from an ebay auction it will work on my PN-215. I don't mean to sound stupid but I don't want to waste 9 bucks+shipping on something that won't work.

My father owns at handheld computer that uses MCIA (which seems to be the same as these phones use) at his work yet it won't plug into my phone (the MCIA is too small). I don't know if this information is of any use I just thought I'd add it.

Excellent. I'd heard of some type of hex hack in regards to the shutter sound on the 8910, but to know it's true on the 8915 is good to know.

The cable is the same. You also overestimate its cost though. You can get one off eBay for $8-$10 shipping included.

is the sound completly off or just lower then it normally would be??

Posted by: Locke

It's off, if I meant it lowered the volume I would have said so. The 3 menu options for a shutter sound correspond to that byte having a value of 0x04, 0x05, or 0x06 so I tried setting it to 0x03 and it worked. It's quite possible that 0x03 has no special meaning and invalid setting for this byte will have the same results but I picked 0x03 and it worked so I thought I should share. I did not bother testing further as I was much more interested in getting java apps to work and I am pleased to say that right now my phone is running a free breakout clone . I'll probably post more details tomorrow after I write a little app to help format the files so the phone will run them.

Will this wire work with the 8915? The site says it works with 8900 audiovox phones.

I'm a relative newb to this stuff.

Posted by: Locke

chaisson72, I'm using bitpim to move files on and off the phone.

StrayTanGenT, I think it should work but I can't say for sure. The cable I'm using was intended for a Kyocera Slider SE44 and has a
Prolific 2303 chip to convert from usb to serial.

I'm already a day late with my promise of more info on games but uploading midlets is breaking my phone, all sound stops working, with distressing regularity so I won't be posting any files until I have that issue sorted out.

Posted by: U_NV_ME

Wow look at all the progress we are making since I've been out of action. I wish I had something to add but I have been way too bussy with work & other ****. I've been doing the picture replacments for wallpaper for a while. You can also get free wall papers from vm's web site, then over write them. The big thing I still can't figure out is adding more ring tones.

On another note I'm pissed that VM is changing the rates for text messageing. I get a **** load of incoming texts. Oh well

Good luck and keep up the good hacking.

Yeah, those Futuredial compatible cables reportedly work with the 8910, so they should be fine.

Those are a different animal. I think you have to use the secondary Curitel port with those serial communication cables. They also cost a bit more than the straight pass-through USB type, if I rememeber correctly.

I've been working on getting java programs to run on my 8915VM and have had some success. Looking at the phone's file system with bitpim it's pretty clear that each midlet has it's own folder /I/games/X1 where X increases by 1 with each app installed. Both of the preinstalled games have the following files in common

suite.jar - the application
suite.jad - application descriptor but not in a standard format, more on that later
suite.mf - manifest file, mangled in the same way as the jad file
suite.idx - I'm guessing it is a cache index
icon.png - the icon displayed in the menu
jadUrl.utf
jarUrl.utf - these look to be the locations where the jad and jar file originally came from
settings.bin - not sure, I'll say it stores some settings :P This file is apparently generated whenever an app is run and is always 39bytes in size
content.dat - describes the contents of the folder to the phone software

Of these files only suite.jar, suite.jad, and content.dat are necessary.
suite.jar is completely standard other than the apparent name requirement.

suite.jad has all of the features of a standard jad file but instead of being layed out
Code:
<Property>: <Value> NEWLINE
elements are seperated by two bytes. The first byte having a value of 00 and the second byte being the length of the element it procedes. For example
Code:
MIDlet-Name: test
would become
Code:
..MIDlet-Name..test
with the . characters representing the following byte values 00 0B 00 04. Also the suite.jad file looks to be terminated by a series of 4 bytes FF FF FF FF.

content.dat begins with a byte indicating the length of the first 4 fields followed by 4 null bytes(00). Fields are terminated by null bytes. The fields in order appear to be
Code:
folder name, app name, mime type, midlet size, app version, vendor, midlet source, N/A, N/A, N/A, N/A, 1
I have no idea what the last 5 fields are intended to store so I just copy their values from the preinstalled midlets. The midlet size field is the combined file size in bytes for suite.jar, suite.jad, and if present jadUrl.utf, jarUrl.utf, settings.bin, suite.idx, and suite.mf. As settings.bin is automatically generated when an app is run it should be included in the size or contents.dat will have an incorrect value after the first time the app is run. This also means that when putting an app on the phone settings.bin should be included or content.dat will be incorrect until the app is run.

/I/games/folder.dat is also important when dealing with java midlets on this phone and lists all of the apps installed on the phone. If this file is deleted it will automatically be regenerated when the phone is restarted.

So to install a downloaded midlet DON'T DO THIS UNLESS YOU'RE WILLING TO BREAK YOUR PHONE
create a new folder with the proper name on the phone
rename the jar file to suite.jar
create a properly formated suite.jad from the original jad
generate a content.dat
upload suite.jar, suite.jad, settings.bin(copy it from another app), and content.dat to the previously created folder
delete folder.dat from /I/games
reboot the phone

I've created a small perl script to help me generate the required files called 8915VM.pl it is run from the command line and takes 2 arguments AppName and the folder name on the phone. If the folder is not specified it defaults to 31. It assumes that AppName.jar and AppName.jad exist and will create a folder AppName.8915/ with suite.jar, suite.jar, and contents.jad. These files and a copy of settings.bin can then be copied to the phone. This app is currently very unpolished and in its current state was intended for my own use. However I'm attaching it as 8915VM.txt(extension changed so I can upload it) if anyone else finds it useful. Although I would recomend waiting for a better version.

I'm also attaching 31.zip which contains a copy of Dwindle with the suite.jad and content.jad files necessary to run on a 8915VM when they are copied to the folder /I/games/31 You will also have to download Dwindle.jar from the above link and rename it to suite.jar. If the folder 31 already exists because you have games other than the 2 demos installed you'll have to create a new folder and edit content.dat appropriately. Do not use notepad for this, use a hex editor.

Once again I can not stress how dangerous editing your phones file system directly is. It is very easy to break your phone. While working on this I have messed up my phone more times than I can count. I frequently put the phone in a state where no sound would play and the only way to shut down the phone was to remove the battery. I make no promises that the files I have provided are correct in anyway and if some thing goes wrong with your phone it is not my responsibilty. BE SURE TO BACK UP YOUR FILES BEFORE TRYING ANYTHING. That way as long as you're lucky enough not to brick the phone you can easily undo whatever happens to go wrong.

Posted by: Locke

For those looking to add wallpapers or ring tones I imagine you can do basically the same thing I did for games.

Attempting any of this will probably break your phone, don't blame me, etc.
Create a new folder under /I/ringers
Generate a new content.dat, looking at the default ringers the format is identical but the last parameter should be 0 instead of 1
Rename the audio file to suite.mp3
Upload the content.dat and suite.mp3 to the new folder
Delete /I/ringers/folder.dat
Reboot phone while crossing fingers and praying.

I'm assuming that contentUrl.utf is not necessary for ringers since jarUrl.utf and jadUrl.utf do not seem to be needed for java midlets.

There are number of audio editing apps out there that should allow you to increase the loudness within the file itself.

True. But I was wondering if there is a way to increase the phone ring volume on the phone itself? Thank you

Unfortunately... it doesn't seem like it.

It just keeps constantly resetting. I see the virgin logo (the static one, not the animated star asterix one) and the I get that message with eiter a "[1], [2], or [3] with it."

That's the log I get from bitpim. It just keeps repeating the above over and over again... even though I have disconnected the phone... AND bitpim refuses to exit. So i have to alt+ctrl del to open windows task manager and close it that way.

However, I JUST bought this phone within the week from best buy. Is it possible to do an exchange? And while I'm on the subject... can I keep my old phone number? Like... can I use my slider phone number still if I use that number to activate a new phone?

And from your emoticons... I think... it would seem that this phone is bricked.

Posted by: StrayTanGenT

I think I know what crashed it though... I didn't make my mp3 file mono. =\

It's driving me nuts to know that it won't boot up.

What did you think I meant when I said that?

Posted by: TakenAback

StrayTanGenT, your phone IS likely bricked, but in that instance when the phone turns on, you might be able to fix the problem.

It totally depends on knowing what you did wrong to begin with. If you overwrote a particular file, and backed up the original first (ALWAYS DO THIS), you could prepare to overwrite it back, and then try to do it in that split second before the phone reboots.

More often than not, people can't seem to do this, but a few have. It may depend on how quick a draw you are.

Posted by: StrayTanGenT

I exchanged the bricked phone. However that piece of information is valuable.... I will keep that in mind the next time my phone is bricked (hopefully never again).

What I realized is that I didn't change the hex codes and junk for the content.dat and url files AND uploaded a stereo mp3... hence the programming meltdown.

=\

But now I have TWO Van Damme quotes from Street Fighter the movie on my new cell as ringers... and I will add more rings and soon pics when I get the chance, now that I understand how to do it implicitly.

=)

If anyone wants them, lemme know and I'll throw it on here as an attachment.

Posted by: StrayTanGenT

COM5: could not open port: (2, 'CreateFile', 'The system cannot find the fiile specified.')

That's the message I get now whenever I try to open up the file tree. =\

Is it the phone, wire...? The phone still works.. but unfortunately... I can't access any of the "downloadable content." (Ringers, wallpapers are not recognized).

Help please?

hey so i need help again (yeah i'm dumb)

i recently got a cable from ebay for my phone. when i followed the steps here http://www.vox8910.ca.tt/ and followed everything except

Quote:
3. Make sure the Phone is OFF and plug the cable into the phone and into the computer. At this point the phone should turn on automatically (don't open the phone).

which my phone just won't do.

when my phone is connected i have 3 new devices:
modem->Curitel Packet Service
ports->Curitel Packet Service Diagnostic Serial
usb->Curitel USB composite device

all of which i updated the drivers for.

however both bitpim and "my computer" don't show it connected.

pc sync say's it's connected, but after that it gets stuck on "Reading schedule information"

my fone's front says "this phone is in offline"

if there is any other info i can provide, just ask.

thanks

Rename the audio file to suite.mp3
Upload the content.dat and suite.mp3 to the new folder
Delete /I/ringers/folder.dat
Reboot phone while crossing fingers and praying.

I'm assuming that contentUrl.utf is not necessary for ringers since jarUrl.utf and jadUrl.utf do not seem to be needed for java midlets.

Well I finely got the balls to try to add ringtones to my phone. First I wanted to correct the name of one of the ring tones I had replaced. All I did was change the name and the file size in the content.dat file and delete the folder.dat file. I figured that this would be ok. Well When I rebooted the phone I keep geting the message"

Please wait.

Damn I bricked my phone again!! Well I will wait until Locke or someone else can figure it out and sucesfully add ringtones.
I'm glad I just backed up the entire phone so I can restore everything onto its repaclement.

Posted by: U_NV_ME

Oh Locke, I'm not blaming you I just figured you info would work.

Posted by: U_NV_ME

Ok Best Buy is so cool if you get the extended warrenty you can return your phone as many times as you want in one year! Witin 2 hours of bricking my phone I have another one.

Does anyone know how to restore the contact list? I do not have a hard copy of all the numbers I had on my phone but I backed the whole thing up before I messed with it.
I've tried restoring everthing but alot of files are write protected. I did restore the phnbk file but that did nothing.
I hope someone can figure out exactly how to add ring tones and explain it to my DUMB ***.

Goofed up and posted this to the wrong thread so I will post it here. It is very simple and most have probably already figured it out but works pretty good. Have been reading the messages here - This is a great forum. One thing I wanted to mention is that with my Audiovox CDM-8915 service provider Virgin Mobil, I can send wallpapers to myself through the vmpix.com server. Just compose an email in your email client (Outlook, etc) and attach the picture file (picture.jpg) to the email message using file attachment. Send the EMAIL TO (YOURPHONENUMBER)@vmpix.com - I have been using .JPG files but think pretty much anything will work. If not, you can convert to .JPG using GIMP, VUEPRO or whatever. The VMPIX server does some file conversion and maybe also size conversion so try sending before messing with converting it. You will receive the message on your phone. Click receive, (it will download the pic), then click options - save attachment, then go to my pictures (it is under camera menu on my phone) - Highlight the picture and hit options then select use as wallpaper. This also works with sending yourself sounds through the vmpix server and it converts them to the phones format too...wav and .mid files work for sure, not sure about mp3's but there is no way to assign them to a ringtone once you have them saved. If anyone figures out how to do this with one of the software packages please post here. Hope this help!

I have been playing with the 8915 lately. It's better to pay a few dollars to download some ringtones and fill the phone to max (is 9 the max?). Then, replace the ringtones with your own. I have screwed up alot, but as long as I restored the original folder.dat and content.dat files, I never bricked the phone when replacing existing ringers. I can even change the names of the ringtones as long as they are the same character length as the original names.

Posted by: StrayTanGenT

I'm going nuts... I figured that the problem before could be fixed after resetting my computer... but now I can't upload more than 1 original ringtone.................

I've recovered the rings to status quo... but no success. If i try to create a 70 folder and stuff, "error" or even if I try to replace one of the default ringers, no dice.

=\

Posted by: saasaa

Hmm the file system for VZW seems to be a lot different then VM. The place ringtones go is just user->sound->ringer however, i can't actually edit any of the files on my phone. i keep getting an error. any idea why?

Posted by: StrayTanGenT

Rocinante... so... i HAVE to dl new ringtones to replace?

Posted by: marcor12

Which data cable works with the PN 215, i have a 8900 cable but does not work. Any help would be great, my email is marcor12@hotmail.com............thanks

Posted by: CandyNJ

I posted this in the VM forum before noticing this thread so...Correct me if I'm wrong but I was baffled as to what seems to me is a reversal of the camera resolution on the audiovox 8915 Snapper phone. Instead of 640x480, the numbers are backwards and are backwards for the medium/low resolution. I have noticed in reviews they say this is a VGA camera phone 640x480 resolution. When you reverse the backwards numbers they all come to regular resolutions that are on most camera phones. Even the manual seems to have them reversed! I could be wrong like I said but I do think it's a wierd mistake? Also no one seems to mention that this camera has a 4x zoom (medium/low resolution only) in reviews I have read. Anyone know about the resolution thing?

Posted by: CandyNJ

Nevermind I got a reply to this in the VM forum!

Posted by: U_NV_ME

So... Has anybody figured out a safe way to add ring tones yet????

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I uploaded this ringtone from a website and saved the media from the pix message. And instead of it saving to my ringtones, it saved to my recorded sounds which i cant find out how to make into a ringtone. But in the book it says you can make them into ringtones. Anyone know how to do this? The file that i even uploaded has the ringtone icon next to it unlike the 1s that i recorded my self. ? What can i do to fix this?

Posted by: five

When making wallpapers for this phone, what resolution should you use?

Example: for my e815, I use 176x220 and it fits perfectly.

Hi every one i just bought a cable for my phone and downloaded bitpim and a driver for the cord but i can't get the driver on the cord and reconize my snapper is there anouther way. im new to this

Where in your book does it say you can make a recorded sound into a ringtone cause I don't see that in my book?

The resolution for the wallpapers is 128x132. You can aslo over write pictures you've taken with a wallpaper you want the resolutin for that is 480x640. 480x640 is for the best quality pictures.

I also had a lot of trouble getting into my Snapper CDM8915.

The newer version of BitPim does not support 89XX phones. http://www.bitpim.org/help/phone-audiovoxcdm8900.htm

I was able to use BitPim 0.7.28 to view the filesystem and replace the ringtones & wallpaper, and download the photos.

Sometimes when I try to view the filesystem, it just hangs and never connects. It may work better if I connect with PC Sync first, but it might just be a coincidence.

Hope this helps.

Posted by: woceyes

how do i find the pass word to pc sync then to connect im lost on it.

Posted by: Erroll

You don't have to find a password. Just click user registration and make up a user ID and password. I still couldn't get it to do anything with my Snapper, though.

Posted by: Erroll

Yay! I got it to work. Thanks Edjon. You da man! I snagged Bitpim 0.7.28 from BitPim sourceforge download site. Then I deleted 0.8 version from Add/Remove Programs in Windows. I rebooted. (Never hurts) Then I installed BitPim 0.7.28 but didn't start it up immediately. I plugged in my phone. Started BitPim. Made sure the settings were for 'Other CDMA phone' and the port my computer uses for the curitel service packet. Then I clicked on "View" then choose "View Filesystem". Then I clicked the '+' under the 'Filesystem' tab. It only took a few seconds and the file system popped right up. The only thing I've done right now is copy photos to my hard drive. I'll try switching wallpapers and all that good stuff at a later time.

I'm just so glad I got this work. As much as I've fallen in love with this phone, if I can't get pics off it, it's useless to me. I was on the verge of selling it off and going with Sprint. Now I can get my pics and customize it just the way I want. I feel like the phone is truly mine now. Virgin might end up making more money off me now. I already bought two games for it. I wouldn't mind getting one or two more now that I know I can the kids pics and give my phone the personal touch.

tried it it didn't work for me and i can't seem to find the files for screensavers to.
o thx for the pcsync help

Posted by: Erroll

You select cam pics as screensavers by using this path

Menu->Settings->Display->Graphics->Screensaver->Screensaver

Once you get there, you can just push left or right on your directional pad and it will switch over to "Pics taken" and you can chose any of those for your screensaver. Too bad animated gifs won't work, though. I could put together a kickbutt screensaver.

Okay. Nevermind all that. I just realised what you meant. You're right. I can't find where the screensaver files are either. I looked in all the folders.

thats ok i would of done the same thing but o well many some one can find it

Has there been any update to being able to access/upload the phonebook file on a VM Snapper (8915)? I can access the phone via USB with BitPM and PCSync, but I have been unable to upload a Contacts/Phonebook. Has anyone had any luck? Which software, etc.

How do you take the faceplate off of the virgin mobile Audiovox "Snapper" cause on hte bestbuy website it says there is no changable faceplate but i see on ebay there are faceplates you can buy for it

I apologize for the repeat if this has been asked previously or if this doesn't belong here. I don't have an 8915, but I'm considering one and I read on Phone Scoop that when the signal is low on this phone, it beeps constantly and I wondered if there is any way to turn it off with the data cable? I know it can be turned off with vibrate mode, but that doesn't seem the best solution. Thanks for any info!

I used bitpim to over-write the original with his after I changed the extention and it worked for me. I doubt the shutter sound selected would matter, but I had mine set at the original one.

*Also has anyone had any problems or been 100% successful at uploading the game he put up? I'm rather nervous to try to do it, until I know others have had success.

*Also, I can't recall this being addressed..I know you can replace photos taken with graphics you want for wallpapers, but what about the original wallpapers in bmp format? Are those replaceable too?

Has anybody tried to use MidpSSH on a snapper? I haven't succeeded in installing it from the phone by using the web browser and I am wondering if it's worth trying to install it with bitpim. I'd like to hear if anybody has succeeded in installing any programs (other than games) on their snapper.

Thanks

I got a couple on ebay. There was quite a few of them. I think the official 8915 ones come in pink, navy and black. But 8910 and 8912 should work too.

Posted by: synth7

Are there any Snapper (8915) cases that hold the phone while it flips open? I don't see any.

Still looking for information (as this thread does not contain verifiable working steps) on gaining full write access to all ringtones and wallpaper directories on the Verizon version of the Audiovox 8915 (Pantech PN-215).

Steps provided so far allow for viewing of files, but attempting to write through Bitpim or QPST's Explorer returns errors (suspect due to Verizon's security measures).

Posted by: Snakedal337

I know im going to feel mighty stupid after you reply with "Well its in the settings" or "RTFM N00b" but here goes.

I'm with virgin mobile, and own the snapper, and everytime the phone turns on/shuts off, it makes that annoying *** music! I dont have the data cable that has been refrenced to many times in the thread, nor do I have access to a ebay account

Is there anyway to shut it off??

Posted by: naushika

I'm not sure if anyone here has seen the VM Snapper Game exchange over at Cell Phone Hacks but I thought perhaps anyone here who has bought games might wish to share them and their folder.dat file.

There are some games posted over there right now on the second page..but to preserve people's bandwidth I encourage you to add other's game files on your own website so that not everyone is downloading from one place.

As it says over there, It's quite easy to replace the demo games with full versions of other games and if you know how to edit hex files you can actually change the names of them too.

It's still a java app regardless of whether or not it's a game. Although your problem with that or IM clients as mentioned in the next post is internet access which is where I suspect things will go wrong.

It should be obvious but that would be software piracy and not so much legal. There are plenty of free and legal java apps out there.

Well it worked for me and even when I did screw up things in the games folder it never rendered the phone unbootable so I wouldn't worry too much if I was you. Worst case is probably you lose all sound have to restore the original games folder.

Anybody figure out how to disable the screensaver on the Verizon version? It comes on after about 5 seconds.

Apparently not that obvious, otherwise I wouldn't have posted about it.

And while I have tried to convert other java games, I have been 100% unsuccessful. I have yet to see clear and concise instructions regarding every step one must do to convert games, no matter how small.

Yours was helpful and much appreciated, but it was too much of an overview for me.... It was well written, but it was almost written with the assumption that people following it have some experience with hex editing and such. And I know I certainly don't. Also providing a suggestion for which hex editor to use would be fantastic and then doing step by step instructions for that specific program.

Does anyone have the default ringtone's directory including the folder.dat file? I believe I somehow got rid of one of the original tones and I have absolutely no idea how.. My backup only has folders 10, 20, 30, and 50. I am assuming there was a 40 at some point. Thanks!

Posted by: bcarver78

Ok, here it is in a nutshell. I have a virgin mobile 8915 snapper cell phone. It's a great phone but i'm finding myself getting HIGHLY annoyed. After 5 hours of trial and error I've discovered that either I am an idiot or my cell phone and pc are conspiring to ruin my week. I've downloaded and installed about 7 different programs.. some programs i even tried 2 or 3 different versions of. These ever so popular (and thus far utterly useless) programs include futuredial snap media, bitpim, QPST, and even PC Sync. None of these programs work. They all detect the ports that the drivers have set up but beyond that they refuse to do anything else. PC Sync claims it connects but I think PC Sync must be practicing for a career in politics cuz it's damned sure lieing!!! I can't even get it to allow me to bring up my phone book on my pc or check the messages on it or even look at the photos. I'm at a complete loss here. Anyone have any suggestions???

I'm not sure if a certain version of bitpim is needed.. but you might wish to check on that. Also, in bitpim did you go up to view and then view filesystem? Once when reinstalling bitpim I failed to do this and wondered what I was doing wrong, because the filesystem tab was not there. That's what you want for transfering files and such. If it's not that, hopefully someone else might be able to provide other suggestions.

Once you do get in there, if you'll read above, I am looking for someone to upload their ENTIRE, default ringtone directory for me. If you might do so, I'd appreciate it greatly. :-)

Posted by: bcarver78

Well, after some trial and error (I bricked my phone and had to exchange it for a new one) I've discovered a few things. First, Naushika, you were correct.. many thanks to you for explaining what I was doing wrong. I was able to access my phone however that turned out to be a bad thing as I got a little too carried away and ended up totally screwing up my phone. Oh well, I'll chalk that up to a lesson learned. As for uploading my entire default ringtone directory... that's not a problem at all. However before I do so Id like to make sure you have the same exact ringtones and such that I do as I know virgin released these phones with at least 2 different sets of "default" ringtones. So here is a list of the ringtones my phone came with.

1) Hey Baby
2) Metal
3) Scratching
4) Synth
5) Jingle

If these are the same ringtones your phone has let me know and we'll work something out on me transferring my ringtones directory to you.

I'm sorry that happened to you.. I think we all fear such a thing happening at one point or another. I know some have been able to return their phones without much difficulty. Perhaps that is a possibility for you.

Those are the same ringtones as I have, I have sent you a pm with my email address to send the directory too. It's much appreciated. Thank you, so much!

Posted by: bcarver78

I was able to return my phone and exchange it. As i said... I chalked that experience up to a lesson learned. As a side note.. I think it would be an excellent idea for some of you who have had luck ringtones and such to perhaps post a step by step guide that pertains the the virgin mobile version of this phone that doesn't involve hex editing a bunch of files or overwriting the files we currently have... some of us aren't as technically inclined as others... and some of us need a "how to add ringtones for dummies" guide.. (ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HINT HINT!!!!). Anyway, if someone would be kind enough to come up with a more.. trouble free way of doing the ringtones.. it would be greatly appreciated by EVERYONE I am sure. I saw earlier in this thread that someone had made an irc client type deal for making ringtones... however.. as nicely designed as it may or may not have been... it lacked one key thing.. a MANUEL!!!! Not even the first line of "this is how you do this" was included with it and seeing as i totally tanked my first phone attempting ringtones.. i'm not in too big of a hurry to attempt experimenting with the phone again.

Good to hear you were able to return it. I agree, a step by step guide would be nice. I think it's easy to forget when writing instructions for others that you may need to simplify things and make them something everyone can use, not just those who are more advanced. And that certainly isn't to imply that instructions in the first place are not appreciated, they definitely are, but a little refining wouldn't hurt either.

I don't have any difficulty making ringtones and adding them, especially when vm had the free VMU ringtones. I would just order them and then overwrite. Does anyone know if those tones are still up? W/ the new site design, there isn't a search feature for ringtones that I can find.

If it's not that, hopefully someone else might be able to provide other suggestions.

Once you do get in there, if you'll read above, I am looking for someone to upload their ENTIRE, default ringtone directory for me. If you might do so, I'd appreciate it greatly. :-)

Can you tell me what version of bitpim you ended up using to view the snapper directory? Is it the most recent release or did you use 0.7.28 (as mentioned in an earlier post). I want to use the dat file that will silence the shutter sound on the phone. I'm assuming this is a simple drag and drop? (or similar technique). Thanks in advance!

I use version 0.8.14 and it seems to work ok. Oh, hey... Naushika.. since you've had a lot of success with adding ringtones... any chance you could clue me in on how the hell to do it without tanking my phone???

Worked using the latest ver of Bitpim (0.9x)...

Have you tried out the following technique on the link below?
http://www.cellphonehacks.com/viewt...p=167860#167860

Posted by: bcarver78

That method is for an 8615 and NOT an 8915... the file systems and setups for these phones are as different as night and day. First of all the 8615 uses .mid files for the ringers while the 8915 uses .mp3... and thats just the first EASILY noticable difference. Second, hitting menu 4 would take you into virgin XL on the 8915 and I'm no rocket scientist but I DO know you can't possibly rebuild the file structure of a phone from there. Don't get me wrong, I'm not flaming you at all man... we all make mistakes and I can see how you could get the 2 confused based only on the model numbers... but these phones are fragile enough as it is... MANY of us have already tanked our phones more than once... we aren't looking forward to repeating that process.

Posted by: baldbear

The phone uses, .mid, .mp3, and .pmd

(I have all 3 working btw)

Posted by: bcarver78

oh.. point made... but reguardless the method he posted will not work for the 8915

If anyones still interested in Java on this phone...
Just discovered that settings.bin has to do with the phone's settings for the app (this includes security clearance for web access). Trying to get J2ME AIM (JohnnyChat) and Opera to work. Sadly I'm still stuck with a broken data connection, as I purchased the VM phone and activated it on U.S. Cellular.

wtf are you talking about? its only a website that tells you how you put games and stuff on your phone. Ive been using it and have gotten no spyware. spyware is software that steals info from you for ad purposes. unless if bitpim or pcsync has spyware, i think that site is clean.

Posted by: linedrivekid123

srry about that last post.. it looks like the mods deleted the one before it about the guy saying that i was sending you to a site full of spyware.

Posted by: bcarver78

look, i went to the site and ended up with over 60 different damned spyware programs on my system and i know for a fact it was clean before going to that site and i also found 5 viruses. claim what you want but i know they came from that site so i am advising others to avoid that website you posted like the plague!!!

Posted by: linedrivekid123

i cleared out all of my IE cookies and when i went to the website i got no cookies. however, if you click on the ads then you get some cookies. cookies are different then spyware. even this site has cookies on it. the definition of cookies are:"Text files downloaded onto a visitor's computer hard drive to store the visitor's actions in order to better customise their following visits."spware comes from a program that you install from the internet like kazaa or a filesharing program.

Posted by: bcarver78

it can also come from embedded .exe files hashed into the html code of a website using pop-up banners to initiate them and i am well aware of what cookies are. i've been dealing with computers for years and i certianly wouldn't make such claims about a website without first having substantiated such claims by visiting the site more than once to make sure it wasn't a fluke instance. i went to that site a total of 3 times. all 3 times i encountered spyware and viruses, one of which was a keystroke logger. no doubt about it folks.... if you choose to visit that site you do so at your own risk.

As a matter of fact.. here is a list of spyware found on that site.

I went there recently, did 3 virus/spyware checks all from different companies after reading your post here and found none of those. I found a couple others, probably that I'd gotten in the time between v checks, but none of what you have listed.

I'm not saying the site doesn't contain such things, but I didn't have a problem with it. I doubt it matters, but I use firefox primarily and I have ie set to very strict specifications.

oops. sorry. No more profanities.

anyway all I did was goto the site, did not even click anything and McAfee went crazy..

Does anyone know if there's a way to turn off the loss of service alert on this phone? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Also not specifically to do with this phone, but if you hook the phone up to your computer does the phone need to be active in order for you to be able to retrieve anything off of it? email me any help at emz322@rochester.rr.com or leave it here

Yep, Outlook (installed but not configured) tried to run the setup wizard twice when I visited this page. A quick look at the html code showed 2 different java scripts.
Windows defender not showing anything loaded from the page, but the cancelled Outlook setup probably prevented that.

Posted by: linedrivekid123

its because of the javascript for the clicksor ads.

Posted by: bcarver78

I'll be honest guys... personally.. I don't care how the dang things infect your system... I just know I had to format my system.. not once.. but TWICE to get rid of that crap my system got infected with on that site. You guys seem to think I'm crazy or that I'm lieing... but now it's been VERIFIED by 2 or 3 other people right here on this thread. If you go to that site you are probably going to be having computer problems. You know, I try to do the right thing and warn people about stuff like that but it seems my efforts have been in vain.
Now that we have gotten that out of the way.. let's get back to my question... can someone post an easy to use step by step guide for making and adding ringtones to this phone???

Posted by: naushika

I unfortunately don't have time to write up a guide. For making ringtoness, follow the directions in the se47 slider thread. That is how I make them. For adding, I've seen guides all over the place. Individually adding is not the best method, getting the free ones on the vm site and overwriting is much easier, just don't get too many. There is a warning about that either here or over at cellphonehacks. Hope that helped.

Oh and I don't know that anyone was accusing you of lying about that website. I didn't have a single problem, maybe because I use firefox along with a few extentions and other things and can pretty well control what runs from sites and what doesn't. Either way, different computer configurations could easily explain why some are more at risk than others. There is a site that runs diagnostics on how susceptible one's computer/browser is to such things, I don't think it would be a stretch to highly recommend anyone who did have problems find something similar and check their vulnerability.

Posted by: linedrivekid123

note to bcarver78: you better never use the internet if going to that site made you have to format your computer. going to one website cant do that.(unless you download a bunch of stuff and active-x controls... which this site doesn't have) if you really had to format your computer 2 times because of going to website, then you definitely download a copy of firefox!

Posted by: linedrivekid123

OK, maybe you have to clear your cache, but go to virginmobilesnapper.com and report here any spyware you encountered on the site. its completely free of spyware.

I've attached my CameraState.dat for anyone who wants it. The extension was changed to .txt so I could upload it.

Now that I've contributed my bit anyone having success uploading java applications(games)?

OK, for the people that have done this, I just download the file and rename it to "camerastate.dat?" Changing it from ".txt" to ".dat" will make it a ".dat" file?

I can't wait to get my cable! Hopefully this week.

The reason i had to format my system twice was because one of the dang viruses i got from the site embedded itself in the master boot record of my hard drive and i didn't catch it the first time.

do you still have kazaa?

Posted by: bcarver78

i don't use kazaa as it is a hotbed for viruses and such

I assume that no one knows how to turn the loss of service alert off for this phone since there hasn't been any replies about that. Only replies lately have been about how a website supposedly messed up bcarvers comp.

Posted by: linedrivekid123

all you can do is keep your phone on silent if you have no signal.

If you have the QPST software you can turn off the alert, mine's been off for 2 months.

Posted by: HalfPint0303032

I do have the QPST software, would you be able to tell me how to do it?

this has been bugging me for months now.

What are you having a problem with?

This thread has certainly been neglected.

It would be lovely if someone who knows how to add programs and games could write a detailed description as to how exactly to do it w/ the hex editing detailed and such.

I have an AudioVox 8915 Snapper from VM.

I purchased a MyBat USB data cable (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...em=180025762214) purported to be for this phone, and installed Curitel PC Sync and BitPim.

I can't get detection.

Is my cable the wrong type? Did I do (or not do) something wrong?

I usually use QPST, but since I've noticed some people prefer BitPim I installed that. QPST recognizes my phone fine, but when I tried using BitPim it saiid no phone detected. I would suggest trying QPST and see if that will recognize your phone. QPST asks for the SPC for Virgin Mobile its 657223 If you need any help with the set up of that I can help you with that. But again, I would suggest trying QPST and see if that recognizes your phone.

@ tandy1000tl2 & HalfPint0303032, Did either of you just try the filesystem view without trying to detect the phones? Good Luck.

Hi! Is there somewhere to download BitPim 0.7.28 or could somebody send me the install file?

Posted by: VOX284

Just came back from Target. I always check the back aisle in the electronics section where they put the items they are trying to move/close-out.

I have a VOX8500 which I am very happy with, altho not that thrilled that MOST merchants are now refusing to stock the $20 TopUp cards($30 min); luckily Target still has twenties. That may seem odd to heavy users, but I don't use my phone all that much, and consequently, have a lot of time on it.

Anyhoo, I didn't have my glasses with me, and looked like the Target price was $39.99 for the Snapper. The only reason I would 'snap' up the Snapper is for the camera, which not all that hot, definition-wise, would still be neat.
Great price on a closeout; they had like about 8-10 of them.

Store: Harrisburg, PA.

Posted by: VOX284

Bought the Snapper; will changeover my Virgin account this week from my trusty VOX8500.

Was surprised to learn that Target is selling the Virgin $20 cards for only $15! I had previously asked the clerk if he knew if Virgin was going to a new quarterly topup rate of $30, but he had no clue. Other vendors of topup cards seem to NOT be stocking $20 anymore, e.g., WalMart has only the $30 cards, as a minimum, so something may be in the works down the road. The cards are only good for a year from date of purchase, so it is not practical to hoard $20 cards in any quantiy, especially if Richard Branson needs more bucks for his space program, and ups the ante to $30 every 3 months, as the new minimum. Since Virgin is on the Sprint network, service seems quite reliable to date; I try to test it everywhere I go; no complaints so far. Paying $80/year, in $20 increments, is best value in cellphone service.

Hey,

Where can I find bitpim 0.7.28? I tired sourceforge.net and came across almost every release bitpim had except it skipped over any release after 0.6 and then began back at 0.9. I have an audiovox snapper cdm8915 and I read on here that version 0.7.28 was the only way to get the snapper to work with bitpim. Also when I select Curitel Packet Service does it matter what USB port I have my phone plugged into?

Thanks for the response and the download. I thought this topic was dead. Turns out it's not. Anyway I'm going to go try it out now.

Edit: I just tried it out and there's a problem. I was able to choose what com port to use and the phone settings but after hitting OK the program just exits automatically. Now when I start the program I get the splash screen and then it exits, but the task is still running in the task manager. What should I do?

Uninstall the other version of BitPim then reinstall the old one. Same thing happened to me and that's what I did.

Posted by: djallen

There's gotta be something else to it, because I did what you said and the same thing still happens. I also went into the programs folder to make sure everything was deleted and it was. Any other suggestions? In the mean time I'll be trying to figure out what it wrong.

Edit: Figured it out. I had to delete a bitpim folder from My Documents. That was the thing that was messing everything up. Everything is working ok. Thanks.

Posted by: zigg77

Can someone explain why BitPim 0.7 is needed? I used 0.9 to connect my 8915 with "Other CDMA". Granted, I did it in read-only mode, because this thread has made me wary

Posted by: djallen

.7 is needed over .9, because the snapper cdm8915 has a shoddy operating system and is prone to "bricking" very easily, so bitpim decided to drop the support for it completely in version .9 as in .7 they told you not to use the cdm8915, but it could still be done. I've had no problems yet, so if your interested in doing this use version .7 because it's the only one that will work.

I have a Virgin Mobile 8915 that I had added a few ringtones to. I made sure to back up the ringer directory in bitpim.. but as it turns out.. only the 2 files in the ringer folder were backed up and not the entire directory. I need a backup of the original ringer directory because after messing up somewhere along the line all I get is an error in my list of ringtones on my phone. So, if someone has the file, it would be greatly appreciated.

I've got a backup of the original directory as it was from the store. It actually has 5 ringers though. Did you remember to delete the folder.dat file? I have the snapper script as well if you'd like it. It eliminates the need for all the hex editing and such. I'll post the ringer folder and get you a link to it. Good luck. ;-)

That worked, and I was actually able to add one ringtone, but after folder 60 I would get the error again. I can replace all the rest of the tones, but even if I buy a ringtone it gets messed up if it goes over 60.

When you add folder 60 are you modding the utf and dat files? The phone is also very picky about ringer format.
Good luck. ;-)

I've been thinking of getting this data cable It claims to come w/ a CD in the title, yet says no software included in the description.

My main question is: is the CD necessary? Can't I just download the drivers from http://www.curitel.com/UploadDATA/m...X115CPCSync.zip ?

No, the CD isn't necessary. My cable came with the same driver cd, and the drivers are the same as the ones on the site.

Anyone have any games/graphics that you bought from VM to share? I just bought NFS Carbon for $6 and I will post all the files if someone else posts a game other than the other ones available for download (golf, poker, and bejeweled)

I will post two wallpapers I bought awhile ago (before I had the cable).

Thank you naushika for the game.

Another tip for Snapper users is that the wallpaper works perfectly at 128x160. Just google around for them. With the 240x320 wallpapers, the phone resizes them and can't fit the whole thing on the screen so it cuts off the bottom part. With 128x160, everything is fine. 128x128 doesn't work though. I keep getting
