What you did was overwrite one of the ringtones that comes with the phone. You can't do that i dunno why. Just go to the VM site and search ringtones for VMU. just download those (They're free) and overwrite those. Trust me I know the whole system here LOL.

FALSE. You can overwrite the ringtones that come with it, EXCEPT the "Jingle" one. My "jingle" one disappeared for some reason (don't ask why) and when I tried to put another ringtone on it by downloading a free one from VM, it borked over the "Jingle" spot. I luckily had a backup of the old "Jingle" and just overwrote it and all was fine.

You can overwrite the other four without a problem. I recommend it instead of doing the hex editing thing. It is a lot easier. Does the title even matter? Not to me it doesn't.

Well excuse me lol. Thanks for the info though. I haven't had the chance to hack my phone anymore, since lately I've only had access to public computers. I do know a Jamster thing though. You can get free ringtones from them, just make sure you ONLY are using top-up cards. (No paypal/debit/credit) then make sure you have less than 9.99 in your account. Just sign up and it won't cost you to download stuff. That's how i get my fodder ringtones lol. oh and don't forget to opt-out before topping up. I probably won't have my VM phone for much longer cuz on my 16th birthday i'm probably going to get at&t phone.(Sony ericsson w580i yay!!!!!!!!!)

after several weeks of research and experiments I'm stuck -

I broke my old vm8915 snapper handset containing my downloaded wallpapers, games, phonebook etc. and got the bright idea that maybe I could put the old card inside a new handset/lcd; this failed, because the new lcd would turn on, but perhaps was not getting full connectivity since it would not actually display anything I could see. Still, I had hope that I might be able to retrieve ringers, et al via data cable and after much toiling and small miracles I was able to copy all files to my computer via QPST. Now I have run into frustration trying to get these files onto my new handset (same model vm8915 snapper - unsmushed)

I have tried backing up nvm of old phone and restoring it to the new one, and get an error message ("can't communicate in diagnositc mode" i think it said) Also have tried adding new directories and files via efs explorer only to have them disappear again.

Is there any simple solution to this that I am missing? I feel so close and yet so far... all I want to do is get my phone back the way it was before it was smushed (*sniff*)

btw - I am a complete newbie (albeit a resourceful one) and don't understand half of what is being discussed in general - I consider it a true accomplishment that I managed to get as far as I did, so please be gentle with me... oh, and my carrier is virginmobile.

I have the Snapper and am going to purchase a data cable from Cell Phone Shop. After I download BitPim, how would I go about disabling the annoying camera sound effects that cannot be disabled by default?

Thank you for any info.

Posted by: OmegaWolf747

OK... no one wanted to answer my question. Fine...

Anyway, I bought the cable and was able to get my computer (Win Vista Home Prem) to detect the phone and assign it to Port 4 (USB).

However, when I run BitPim, it just won't connect to the phone. I set it to manual, COM 4 and COM 5 and nothing works.

edit: I read on a previous page that an older version of BitPim is required for it to work with the Snapper. Where can I get the older version?

You should be able to use the version you have. Turn off the autodetect feature, go to file system view. That's the only function that really works with this model. If you want to try the older version search this thread and the flasher thread. There is a link in one of them to the older version in my box.net acount.
Good luck. ;-)

Thanks so much for the info! I had been clicking on Phone instead of File System. The procedure worked and the camera is silent. Thanks again!

You're welcome, glad to be of service.
Good luck. ;-)

Well, i have the CDM8915 phone, and i have the data cable, and i have Bitpim 1.0.5. i can't get it to work. i've tried most of the stuff mentioned on this thread. older versions of bitpim won't work on my computer, and the newest version of bitpim just won't recongize my phone. all i'm looking to do is remove some of the sounds from it, like when you turn on or off the phone, and the camera noise. any thoughts?

Have you downloaded and installed the drivers for the phone? Choose filesystem view rather than trying to detect the phone, set up the port manually.
Good luck. ;-)

Hi. I would like to know how can I access the phonebook on the 8915. I used Pc Sync for my other phone (8910) and worked perfectly. However, the 8915 can't seem to connect. I do go pass the Com3 password and it says it connected fine. Then i try to get data from the phone and it keeps trying forever (I left the computer doing this and came bach 30 mins later and still the same screen with no info yet). All I need is the phonebook, not pics or audio. The lcd is broken and I need to retrieve some phones.

Thanks for the help.

Hello pinchi2, sorry I didn't give you a response sooner. Which Cellular Provider do you have for the 8915? If it's Virgin Mobile, it sounds like from what everyone is saying is that the phone is practically unlocked and free from limitations; However if you're using the Verizon 8915, then i'm afraid i'm about as stumped as you are. Even with bitpim, (and from the sound of it, Curitel's PC Sync) you can barely grab any file off that phone, period. even if you were able to grab the phonebook directory (nvm/pb? not positive, sorry) and then opened the files to look at them in a hex editor, (or just simply, Notepad) the names/numbers would most likely be seperated and unorganized, you wouldn't be able to tell whose number went with the person's name, not only because the phone seperates the names from the numbers in seperate files, but really jumbles them around and completely moves them out of order. I really hate to say it, but since your screen is broken, you will probably have to resort to taking it to your local Cellular Provider (judging that your phone isn't with Virgin mobile, but with a different provider,) and ask them to back up the phone numbers and other information for you to a new/replacement phone. Sorry about that, wish I could be more help, but sadly 8915's with other providers are extremely limited in functionality. Good luck.

He claims that nothing unusual happened. All we know is that the main screen is dead. The keypad works fine, the sound works fine, and the little screen that shows the time works fine. Just the main screen is dead. Is this the end of the phone or is there a way to fix this?

My boyfriend has a tendency to put things in his pockets and then sit on them.... I have seen some flip type phones that get used alot wear through the connecting ribbon in the hinge section, but if the small screen is still working I'm stumped. Sometimes mine freezes up and I have to pull the battery to jump start it, but usually that is an "all stop" situation without sound or keypad. Is it lit but black/no picture or really dead with no power at all? (lit = maybe software/programming glitch, all dark = probably hardware related) How long has it been in service? Any customizations via data cable?

You might try getting a used one off ebay (I found 2 for less than $15 w/ free shipping) and then switching out the lcd for one that works, but then if you actually get one that works you can activate it yourself and keep the same phone # on the virgin mobile website for free - it would only be worth switching the lcd for whatever data might be on the current handset that you can't live without or duplicate. If you are quite desperate I think I've got at least one extra (bricked one or two, but the displays still work) though I don't know how much patience you have for fiddling with stuff...
and again, I'm not sure it would fix the problem. Anybody else in the family have the same phone? you could try their lcd as test run and then if it works at least you know what to look for.
