Purchased NEC N840...some small questions

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi, I'm new to these forums, and I just purchased the NEC N840 off eBay and so I'll be using that by the end of the summer for sure.

I was wondering what accessories do I need to buy in preparation for the phone.

For example, what's the difference between the USB cable and the miniSD adaptor (for transferring files)? Should I just get the miniSD adaptor? And if so, what's the max. size for the miniSD card the phone can take? Finally, for Java games, I can just download some and upload them to my phone with no problem?

Sorry if it seems like a lot of questions...I just bought it and i'll be receiving it quite soon. I'm excited because this phone has a lot of features I really want in a phone (but I better get another battery!) and of course it's a big step in comparison to the Panasonic GD88. Finallly, I can see how 850 mHz is like using Rogers because my old phone doesn't have it.

First off, congrats! You will NOT be disappointed with this phone, and yes, having the extra 850 band makes a HUGE difference with Rogers!

Difference between USB and cable is that USB can transfer anything from your computer to the phone and vice versa.. but.. it's a cable, and a little bit of a hassle. I prefer the memory card, however with the card you cannot transfer ringtone files such as MMF/MFM/MIDI or images other than JPEG. You can only transfer JPEG pictures, MP3 files, and 3GP audio/video movies (ringers).

I don't often use formats other than 3GP for my rings, and I only work with JPEGs for pics anyway, so I find myself using the memory card 99% of the time.

The other difference is that with the cable, the files can be named anything. With the memory card, in order for the phone to read them properly, you need to follow a specific format. For example, pictures must follow the format NEC_0000.JPG, where the 0000s are any numbers. 3GP movies must be named MOL000.3GP where again, the 000s are any numbers you want. MP3s just need to be 8 characters or under, but ID3 tags can show up with no problem.

As for uploading Java games, you just need the USB data cable and a program called Java Uploader. You can get that program as well as a bunch of games compatible with the phone here:

Hope all this helps!

i asked in a another thread about where i can get some stereo headphones for this phone but no one answered. so i'm asking now. where can i get some stereo headphones to listen to mp3's?
i don't see them on ebay.

I think you can use any headphones, there's a setting in the phone to set the headphone output to stereo or mono.

Do you have the adaptor thing that plugs into the weirdo connector on the phone and terminates into a 2.5mm (or 3.5mm, whichever it really is) plug?

I'm not sure if they're all the same, but mine came with a NEC branded plug connector thing, which doubles as a wired headset (the connector was a mic you could speak into when on call, and it clipped to your shirt)and then your headphones doubled as the earpieces.

if your phone didn't come with the headset attachment, you can get a somewhat stripped down headset+headphones as one 1-piece and use this.

now of course its not gonna be easy, but here is a big hint.

the headset of the v902sh/sx813 is the SAME as the n840, thus interchangable.

they sell the headset+headphones @ pac mall in toronto ~ $20-$25, im sure u can find it elsewhere.

imagestation? imageshack maybe? or your ISP might give you hosting spaces.

I'm having trouble transfering .mmf files to the phone. In MemoryEditor, I can only send .mid files.....it won't recognize .mmf files. Am I doing something wrong? (I'm using the USB cable, btw).

Hi,

I was wondering why can't I transfer larger (>6MB) .mp3's? Is there a way to do that on this MemoryEditor? How can I transfer to the miniSD card instead of directly to the phone with the USB cable?

Hey, anyone know where to get the usb cable?? or is it the same as other NEC models?!?!?!

thanks

The USB cable comes with the phone in the box.
