Questions for the calendar

I just bought the treo 650, and had some questions. On my contact when i input the birthday of a friend, it only shows on the calendar but is there a way that it would alert me that i have a friends birthay with out me going into the calendar?
Also, anything else i should try or any software that would make the fun more fun?

When you enter the birthday in contacts it asks you if you want a reminder, and how many days in advance you would like to be reminded.
What fun do you want to be more fun?
