Using my 6610 as a modem?

Thinking about changing to Cingular. Curently with Verizon. I have an Nokia 6610 tri-band phone that will work, but confused about the data service. Called Cingular 3 times and no answer from the sales people except a couple of hang-ups.
With Verizon I get 14.4 baud with my CA-42 cable and works ok for email. This just burns my minutes.
How fast is cingular's service, and is is all paid per MB? One person told me 20-45k and another told me 384k-1.5mb.
