Reasons why I ABSOLUTELY HATE my Sharp 902

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I came back from Japan a few weeks ago and my japanese friends got me a 902 and I couldnt have been happier, they gave it to me so that i can keep in touch with my friends in Japan, and to be able to type JAPANESE through my phone to them. I was really happy. It would have been absolutely perfect to stay in touch. I figured get back and would unlock the phone, put in my e-mail settings and e-mail away to my friends.

I got it unlocked and now are so many things that i dont particularly like with my japanese 902SH i dont even know where to start...

1. first of all, there is very very little customization on the phone, besides ringtones and wallpapers, on my old Moto V600, i could change EVERYTHING, even create my own themes,

2. MP3s are DRM locked. I got a card reader, and software to create .dm files, and upload them to my SDcard, but it still doesnt show up.

3. There's no english predictive text!! how can you make a phone without that!

4. The e-mail client is locked, so i cant put in my own e-mail settings. Now i can't keep in touch.

5. I was told to flash my phone to use the e-mail client, but if i flash, i cannot Read or write in japanese, its a trade off, so either be able to get e-mails that I can't read, or type in japanese that i can't send to anyone.
My japanese friend's english isnt good, so i wanted to email in japanese, that is the main thing.

6. I figured maybe i would just use my browser to send e-mail from Gmail, so i could still read and write e-mails in Japanese,

However, sometime if i try going to Gmail, I keep getting "ERROR: exceeds maximum number of redirects"
after clearing the cache, it works,
once i get through, i get another error: "No Java script"
after i get select the no javascript site,
i log in and i type out an e-mail to someone in japanese, hit send, and its all good, then i notice that it has never sent. IT JUST DOESN'T SEND.

Also if i take too long it notifies me that "the conversation is no longer avaliable, please log back in" and my e-mail is gone.

it just does not send or anything, i can only read.

7. If i go ahead and flash the phone, lose japanese, but the e-mail client is unlocked, it still wont work because Gmail does not with the 902, there is no settings for SSL.

8. Little things like not being able to answer the phone by opening it, i have to press "ANSWER", and i can't change it.
It does not make a sound for missed calls unless I open the phone. It only makes a sound if the last time I used it, I closed the phone in the main screen. If i close in while in the menu, or setting box or anything else, it will not show until i go back. It really ticks me off, considering im a student and i cant always get my phone.

text messages dont make a sound either under the same circumstances,

Im always having to make sure that i didn't close the phone while in the menu.

There is no "vibrate then ring" mode. It only vibrates on manner mode.

The phone to me feels more like a burden to me, always having to constantly check it and go through long processes to check my mail.

the only good things are the camera, ok reception, and the looks. thats it.

The main reason for the phone was e-mail in japanese and it doesnt work whatsoever,
the browser gives errors,
DRM MP3s dont show,
Can't customize anything,
no predictive text,
doesnt vibrate.

Its horrible, If anyone has ANYTHING to suggest how to get things to work or easier ways of doing things, PLEASE PLEASE let me know.

What color is it? If it's the black I'll buy it off you

No really though, sorry to hear your troubles but it seems most of them are email app based. I'm not surprised to hear of your troubles regarding that area though since well...this phone was meant to stay within the Vodafone network in Japan...

yeah, but you have to consider the fact that you got a phone that wasn't meant for a market outside of japan, so of course there are going to be issues.

My advice is to just flash to the sx813 firmware. I had to deal with the same tradeoff of not being able to send japanese text messages, although it appears I can get them (sometimes...). I'm not sure about the japanese fw, but sx813 is pretty customizable. You can set pictures for different events (like alarm and calls- not just calls from a specific person although you can do that too). And it does vibrate and ring.

I think most phones don't answer automatically when you pick them up don't they? It gives you a chance to see the call and decide whether or not you want to answer it, or send it to voicemail. Personally I think that's a good thing. But the thing where it doesn't tell you about messages if you didn't close the phone on the main screen REEEALLY annoys me too- and that won't change even if you switch fw to sx813...

all i can tell you is, i have a japanese version flashed with sx813 and I pretty much love the phone compared to any other phone i've seen or tried. Like i said, of course there will be some side effects of using a phone that wasn't meant for the market you're using it in, but that's just the price you pay. To me it's more than worth it so far.

Even though I cant upload mp3 files to the phone memory, they work fine uploading to the SD card and play without a problem etc, I must say i LOVE my 902. The nokia 8800 has been shelved and will probably not see the light of day for a long time

the 8800 and the 902 are two different phones. i have the 8801 proto in front of me.. its styliung.. its classy. its such a different phoen fromt he 902. u can't compare the two.

Posted by: creztor

I disagree A phone is a phone You can compare them

Posted by: Timsta

you cant do that. both phones functionality are so different. one is a classic phone with barely any functinoality. while the other one is a multimedia phone.. its comparing apples to oranges.. both are fruit..b ut its different. one you eat with skin.. one you don't.

Posted by: Kamen

That...and the fact the two phones were meant for different markets with different demands...so in conclusion, no you cannot compare them after a certain extent.

Posted by: creztor

Its a matter of personal choice, they are both phones and you can compare them. Anyway this is pointless its not going to go anywhere I am however very happy with my 902

Posted by: creztor

The problem is they are both phones. Both can work on the GSM network. My girl friend faced with a Nokia 8800 or a Sharp 902 would pick the 902. The only way she can do this is by comparing the two phones, which one has what she needs, size, colour or any other aspects of the phones that she uses to compare. I know why people say you cant compare them, but you can and people do.

Posted by: ryoaska1

of course you can compare them, but he's right, they're two very different types of phone. If you are comparing them, it probably means you don't have a very clear definition of what you want yet. People that buy a 902 are getting the phone for very different reasons than someone buying the 8800- like for the fact that it's a media phone, as timsta pointed out. You wouldn't get very far comparing the two other than that they both work as phones... Also, deciding which of the two you want is a little different than comparing them. If i were comparing two phones i would be looking at similar features of each phone and deciding which one i thought worked better or fit me better. Just deciding which one has the features that you need most is just that...a decision, not a comparison.

Posted by: creztor

Yes the phones are marketed at different people, but how do you make a decision? You compare them against each other to see which one has what you want. They both are GMS, have cameras, can play mp3 etc. They have features/functions which will make people compare the two phones against each other and then they decide which one best suits them. Decisions are based on something, people will rarely walk into a shop see the first phone and buy it. They will spend a considerable amount of time looking at all the phones and generally asking questions about features/functions. The can be compared, they "shouldnt" as they are marketed at different segments of the market, but they can be compared. Anyway as I said above this going to go on forever as we all have different opinions on the matter

my mail works perfectly. whilst i cannot send in japanese, i can receive them. it's enough for me. i just type in romaji. a pain, but i'd rather have english predictive text when i type in english. my browser works, and my e-mail works. my phone vibrates. my microphone works. my earphone works. the keypad works. my mp3's work, but i've got my ipod for that. what more do you expect from a phone?

it's just a phone.

Posted by: psycho03

so there is no way to get the email client thats built into the phone to unlock while sticking with the japanese firmware?

Posted by: audiolines

I've been trying to get an answer for that for a long time and it doesnt seem like you can. You need to flash the phone. I've been experimenting with other java mail clients, but im having trouble with those too...

I see you have the Japanese V802SE. I was thinking of getting that when i was in Japan. are you able to use your own mail client with that phone?

Posted by: shaolinmonk

get a k750i/w800.. that's your solution

also get the phoen flashed you'll be much happier.....
