Help with P910 and convince me to keep it :)

As you can read on my blog, I just picked up a P910a from Buy.com yesterday and have put a few hours on it. I am a longtime Palm, Series 60, and Windows Mobile (Pocket PC and Smartphone) user, but this is my first UIQ device. I am trying to decide whether to keep the P910 or go with one of a couple other Windows Mobile choices.

I need some help that I haven't been able to find online and think this helpful forum may work best.

(1) How can I make the jog dial more functional and minimize my stylus use? (i.e. how can I access the top menus in different apps, can I use the jog dial to move left and right, can I use the jog dial to tab between fields)

(2) Is the keyboard useful for anything other than just entering text? (i.e. it doesn't seem to jump to apps when I press a letter or filter Contacts as I type)

(3) What do you think is the most compelling feature of the P910 over other smartphone devices?

(4) What application do you recommend I try out?

Thanks for any help in assisting me through this decision process.

Don't forget the jog wheel has click, tilt-click foward, tilt-click back. Experiment. UIQ is made with usability in mind in flip closed and flip open.

Go through contacts with flip closed. Roll up one notch, click Contacts. Then press corresponding number key to move quickly to that section of contacts. EX: Press 2 twice to get to the B's. I have hundreds of contacts and can select any one of them very quickly. Of course you can also click that contact and scroll to the appropriate Home, Cell, Work number and click to dial. It's the speediest Contacts I've seen on any phone.

One handed usability by far. Symbian UIQ also makes beaming anything anywhere child's play.

For music try PowerMP3. I personally like SMAN, QIRC, VNCViewer, Putty, and Opera but I'm a geek. Also, customize your phone.

Guess this thread is done so I'll hack into it!

How is the reception and call quality on it?

Posted by: haywood

reception and quality is equal to, if not better than my landline phone. i have never heard any interference over the year ive had my p910a. the signal will instead, cut-out.... but that is a very seldom problem anywhere i have gone in southern california. even in those buildings that my p900 used to lose signal in (like sam's club, ikea, costco, etc) i still have a good signal (usually at least 2 bars). that is the nice thing about the GSM 850 band in the p910a.

i am confident enough with my signal here, that i am cuting off my regular phone service.

Reception on the 910A is fantastic. I don't even need a regular phone line at home. And its stability - amazing.

I have to admit, it is rather amazing. I have one and I love it. It works great! I tend to be a phone geek too... Sman ROCKS!!! hehe. If anyone wants more help with their P910a's or Symbian UIQ devices...or if you just want a bunch of great downloads and such, go to www.a1k.co.uk . They specialize in UIQ technology. Check it out!

Can anyone speak from a Tmobile perspective or a 1900 MHz perspective?

Glad to hear it picks up a signal and has superb call quality, as I've had bad experience with SE's before (t68i).

I use Cingular, but I do live in the US so I use the 1900 MHz band. What were you needing to know? I might be able to help.

Just want to be certain I'd be making a good purchase for the basic phone use. I like the p910's ability for one-handed use among many other things. Just want to know for sure that the call quality and reception is second to none since there are no stores that carry them for trial...

These comments are good, they're certainly pursuading me to take the leap!!!

Definantly go for it! Its worth every penny and more. In fact, I am trying to trade mine, or at least get enough money to buy the 9300 or Moto MPX(300). Perhaps we can work something out. PM me your email if you want more info. I have a boatload of programs on here too. Im actually writing this message from my phone! There is absolutely nothing wrong with P910's, I am just a cell phone junky and would like something new. Hope to hear from you. By the way, I admin on the site I gave earlier... a1k.co.uk . You can check my credability there. :-)

I forgot to mention, my phone is completely unlocked and it is the P910"a" version with the 850MHz band that you will need as well. Signal quality is superb! anyways, just wanted to clerify which one I owned.
