Sharp 802/902 WAP using Japanese Vodafone Firmware

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: foo_mark

I am just curious if anybody in this forum that owns a Sharp 802/902 (using the Vodafone Japanese firmware ofcourse, not SX813) has manage to use the WAP settings from Rogers/Fido in Canada to surf their mobile internet. I was thinking of buying myself a Sharp 802 since its so cheap, but after looking from post to post in this forum, I am rather skeptical of purchasing one, due to the fact that WAP may not even work, as well as the 3G capabilities may not work in Japan if I ever bring it there . It's something that I really need as a bare minimum to upload J2ME applications that I am developing (and probably will develop a WAP browser/File Transfer tool using the bluetooth API, in order to save costs on testing).

If anybody could answer to this, I would be very greatful.

oh.. you can get on wap using Fido/rogers on the japanese firmware. i helped audiolines with that. not sure about the email and mms tho. u'd have to ask him.

Posted by: foo_mark

Thanks Tim, that eliminates a lot of suspicion that I have with those phones, since they are pretty cheap (238$ I believe at WorldEX) for what they do, was thinking that it would have some sort of limitations. Now all that is left is to check if they are selling the Japanese version of that phone, need to test my app to work with the double byte japanese characters.

Posted by: bakakumo

I searched for WorldEX and found WorldEx Online but they don't have the 902SH.

I am looking for an unlocked 802SH or 902SH with Japanese firmware. Where can I get one and about how much should I expect to pay? (US$238 seems awefully cheap!)

Posted by: foo_mark

Oops, sorry for the short words, I really meant WorldExOnline, thought maybe people already know about them so I put it in short form. Yea, sorry about the price, it's 338$ from WorldEx. And I was confusing with Starlin Wireless that WERE selling it at 269$, now they bumped it up to 305$. Probably they found out it was too cheap.

Dont even bother with Starlin Wireless, they dont even have the 802 and the 902 instock, yet they still let people order it. I got screwed by them since they dont bother updating their site whether a phone is instock or backordered. That site is a waste of time, but suggest people to email them first if they have any phone instock.

Just a tip..

Thanks for the tip, now I will most likely purchase it from WorldEx and start uploading the game that I was working on for a year in production.

Does anybody know where I could get a Japanese unlocked Sharp 802 outfitted with the Japanese firmware? I have been looking through many e-tailers and auction sites, however I can't seem to find one outfitted with the Japanese firmware, most of them are using the Japanese device outfitted with the Euro firmware. Mostly the reason I want to have that phone is that I can run the programmed J2ME apps that I have made which supports the double-byte Japanese character.

Posted by: bakakumo

foo_mark, I've looked online but couldn't find any places either. I'm now asking a friend of mine who's in HK right now to try to find one for me. If he can find one, may be I can get one for you too... no promise though.

BTW., if u only need a firmware that supports double-byte characters, then I guss one with Chinese firmware will work for you too right? I heard 902SH are mostly flashed w/ Chinese firmware in HK, and the price are coming down b'coz 903SH is coming out...

Posted by: kms-lai

the 802sh in hk all has the japanese firmware at HKD2000, they are available everywhere.

the 902sh will not go down in price, it may go up, becuse japan has just stop production of this model.

Posted by: foo_mark

Are you sure about that kms-lai? Because I asked WorldExOnline (HK Based e-tailer)like a few days ago if they were selling their 802 outfitted with the European firmware. (They said that the Japanese firmware is not unlockable, obviously I checked L & K and they have theirs unlocked, just the only thing is that they can't use their custom MP3 ringtone due to the DRM, but I really don't care about it)

Oh and bakakumo, I already have like 2 phones that support the double-byte Chinese Characters (NEC N820 and SE K508i), just that the japanese firmware of the 802 comes with a specific set of J2ME programming libraries exclusive to Japan (JSCL) that I need to use in development.

from all the shops that I know, there supply of 802sh are japan stock, they have only been unlocked, but contains the orignal jap firmware, they will not change the firmware to a european one, because it will not sell, shops in hong kong only sells phones in hk to locals, that is why there are not many online service and people in hong kong want chinese lang, although it's jap firmware it does display some chinese, and will receive chinese sms. but all the sales are from it's big brother the 902sh, because you can flash to the sx813 which is the rom from the official hk model.
you do know that the 802 won't be official in hk, so there will be no chinese rom for this model, that is why the sale is a flop, and that it is very cheap.

if you live in hong kong, you can always take the phone to a dealer and flash it to a european rom for around HKD100, but it will not be standard of the shelf.
I'm not saying you will not find one, it will be hard.

Posted by: Timsta

ohh.. i understand... so while u can buy the 802sh. but its hard to find.. cause its not really geared for the HK market. but you if u do find it. u would need to flah it ot the euro firmware. right?

Posted by: foo_mark

Yeah, I figured, since my friend came back from HK with an unlocked Euro SE K750 that had a 200$ price difference all because it didn't support Chinese characters.

I am rather suprised that everywhere in HK is selling it unlocked with the Japanese firmware intact, is it just me that is seeing all these European flashes. (WorldEx has photos of an 802 in the japanese body (japanese keypad) outfitted with the Euro firmware (unconfirmed)) By the way, know any "other" place where I can get it, or at least they "claim" to have the unlocked Japanese version.

Yup, I know that the 802 doesn't sell officially in HK (and it's only available in Euro and Japan), I checked SmarTone, they only sell the SX813 (902) and the SX833 (907).

Posted by: kms-lai

yes

the 802sh with jap firmware is available everywhere, but with the euro firmware, to be honest, i have'nt seen one

Posted by: kms-lai

to foo mark

how do you know that it is the euro firmware,

the jap version phone has japanese and english lang selection as the display lang.

Posted by: foo_mark

Hmm, maybe we should trade places, and you will see quite a couple floating around (claims).

Posted by: kms-lai

do you have the address, I'll check it, and get back to you tmr

Posted by: foo_mark

Address of the store? Well most of them are e-tailers i checked as well as some eBay posts, only found this one that has the 802 japanese unlocked: http://cgi.ebay.com/SHARP-V802SH-V8...1QQcmdZViewItem
As when I asked what firmware was included, and it was the Japanese one.

For the e-tailer that i mentioned, here is the link to the address:
http://www.worldexonline.com/index....rowse&pageid=80

I am sure you know it already, since they are one of the biggest online resellers.

Posted by: kms-lai

they are very expensive

Posted by: foo_mark

Yes, they certainly are, for what you are used to seeing in local shops in HK.

According to one of my friends who was in HK back in a few months ago, tells me that the ones sell locally (in shops) in HK are sold cheaper, usually because they are unpopular, so to make it up, they sell the those ones outsiders at a higher price.

Posted by: kms-lai

they know they can make more money through mail order

Posted by: foo_mark

Yup, well now I am currently waiting for one of the eBay resellers to reply to my email for the purchase of the 802 using paypal, giving the person a full day to answer, and if i get no response, then I will move on to buying it at L & K. Unless someone could give me another suggestion on where I can buy it, I certainly can't physically go to HK to get myself one, so online ordering is the only way for me.

Posted by: bakakumo

kms-lai, my friend said he asked around at the big "cell phone mall" in Mong Kok and everyone said 802SH is English only, no Japanese. I wonder if it's only because they don't know what they're talking about, since Japanese 802SH has both Japanese / English. Do you know if they are still using the Japanese firmware? I hope they didn't flash it to a european firmware or something...

Posted by: kms-lai

is your friend chinese or english, also when your friend asked the dealers, what language did you friend speak to them with, if your friend spoke in english some shop will presume he wants a english version.

lots of these shop only speak basic english.

if your friend went to sincerely plaza, i think thats what it's called, I know at less 11 shops.

anyway I'll check it out tmr.

You know the 802 SH from LK? http://www.landk.ne.jp/en/mobiles/index.html
I was wondering, if i could use it in united states, hawaii with t-mobile?

plus does anyone know if the V903 SH got unlocked?

If i had a choice i would hands down get the 903.. lol anyways. just wondering. thanks

Posted by: foo_mark

Not sure, going to find out sooner or later whether it will work. Just payed my 802SH (Japanese firmware) from eBay, now waiting until next week to find out.

The only thing I just don't like buying from there is that I have to pay through wire transfer which costs a lot. I would rather pay it through PayPal, which is much easier to manage.

Posted by: ijuok

would it have been better to buy it from L&K ? cause wiretransfer blows.. i was looking at that option and who doesn't accept paypal.. damnit lol other wise i think i would've bought that.

Posted by: foo_mark

I really do not know, only thing is that, wire transfer, if the seller decides to run off with the money and leave you in the dust, you can't find the person to be liable, rather than on Paypal, I can always state that if they don't deliver the merchandise within 20 days, that I can claim back what I just paid. Also Paypal permits me to get off easy with the credit card to make payments later.

You can tell the difference between the JP and EU firmwares for the 802SH in three ways:

1. Check the languages menu, JP firmware has only 日本語 and English, the EU firmware has English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, Swedish, Greek, Hungarian, and Turkish.

2. Look closely at the font type used. In the EU 802 the font is small and letters are closely spaced, while the JP 802SH the letters are large and spaced evenly with big spaces.

3. The top left menu option is called V-Appli in the JP 802SH, and called Games & More in the EU 802.

Hope that helps.

Posted by: foo_mark

Preferably, I would love to see the phones in my hands in person, but where I am living you really can't get access to this kind of hardware unless you are living in Toronto or Vancover.

Posted by: ijuok

hey markfoo, is the seller of the phone you bought
moviesonsale ( 485Feedback score is 100 to 499)Member is a PowerSeller)?

Cause he put up another 802SH vodafone up and i was wondering if you bought it from him, if you could tell me if you got the phone and tell me if it works. Cause i'll end up buying it from him too. Thanks

Also, Whats the difference between the EURO vodafone and Japanese EUROFone?

Posted by: Timsta

802sh. i will have one for sale in a week... after i finish playin with it.

Posted by: foo_mark

Yup, it's from him, as I also asked him to make sure that he had the Japanese firmware installed in the 802 (which he claimed to have it), now I am just waiting until he sends it to me or sends me the tracking number for the shipment. I sent him the payment on Thursday. If he was prompt and quick (like most eBay sellers), he would have sent mine like on friday.

Posted by: bakakumo

Yay, I'm glad to report that my friend was able to get me a red 802SH in HK for HK$2080. He said all the 802SH were actually flashed with european firmware, so he had to pay $80 for the shop to re-flash it back to its original Japanese firmware. Yay, I'm a happy man!!!! This is my first Japanese mobile!!! I can't wait...

Posted by: ijuok

The only thing that sucks, is japanese firmware = no mp3 ring tone.. or custom made ones.. thats one of the things i was looking foward too. so i think i'll settle with euro.

Posted by: foo_mark

Got my 802, but it's not outfitted with the Japanese firmware but with the EUROPEAN firmware damnit! Seems to me the guy doesn't know what he is selling, or he made a mistake or I have been had. Does anybody know a place where I can flash the firmware on this 802 for a good price, somewhere in Toronto or Vancover preferable?
