I've been pondering getting a new phone lately seeing that I've been getting lackluster performance out of my ngage QD. I've been looking at something in the smartphone variety around $200... something to hold me over until the motorola Q is available. (god told me i must own that phone. who am i to disobey?)

pros of the 6620:
EDGE capability
fairly fast
works with the mmc card i already have

pros of the mpx220:
windows smartphone.
i think it's sexy. unlike the football shaped 6620.
nicer display

any comments? other phone recommendations welcome whether they are within my price range or not

i would go with the 6620 only because of the edge. i like the screen better than the moto. i like the apps better that the moto.

the screen is better on the nokia? is it brighter? sharper? just wondering because the moto is listed as having 18-bit resolution as well as more pixels.

havn't had the opportunity to check out the moto in person.

to me the screen looks no different than my v551 i think its the same size to. the moto was is much brighter but you cant really see it in the daylight.

The MPx220 looks nicer and is smaller.

The 6620 has a much wider range of software available for it, has EDGE, takes cheaper full-size MMC cards and is generally more stable/reliable.

thank you for your response. i'll take this into consideration.

since you've owned both i'm curious about the voice dailing on the 6620 and mpx220. on my freaking ngage i can only store "voice tags" for about 8 (if i remember correctly) numbers. this is extremely frustrating. does the 6620 suffer from this sort of limitation? is there a limit on the mpx? in my reading i havn't found one.

also, i see that you have the smt5600. how does this phone compare to the mpx220?

last thing.... menu/navigational speed. the mpx220 has a much faster processor. does this translate into better responsiveness?

the voice dialing is 10 times better on the moto. the 6620 was garbage as for 5600 i like it better than the moto a little slower and you coudnt really modify hack it like the moto but the screen was bigger speaker phone was louder everthing i disliked about it the 5600 made up for it

you mean everything that you disliked about the mpx220 was done better by the smt5600?

I've had a 6620 for about a year, and i have to day, I really, really...love Symbian S60. Huge range of software, the bluetooth compatibility is through the roof, the reception is absolutely phenominal, and Doom.

Well, you could probably get it on Windows CE, too, but the point is that Symbian isn't Doom's native OS - DOS and Windows 9x is.

Anyway, the other thing is, Motorola is Motorola. Which, from my perspective means i think Motorola is junk. At least for the mostpart. If you're a cellphone retailer, though, don't get either - they're no longer sold by current carriers, so far as I know. The phone came out in Canada in 2004, so it may have come out in the US a year prior to us getting it.

However, it's an amazing phone. I've got an E62, which I've also fallen in love with, but I'm going to keep my 6620, too - and not just for demo purposes.

It works (had to send it in for repair after the first 7 months, but I've only had to send it in once. Motorola will be a different story) and i have a 4 year warranty on it. Sure, I could sell it but...over my rotting corpse. I'm not parting with my 6620.

As for imaging, the camera quality, despite being only .3 megapixels, is absolutely incredible. The best looking 640 x 480 pictures I've ever seen come out of a phone, period. If you like, I'll send some pictures of my stepmom's garden if you want an idea of how good they are; just don't blow them up. And the screen is better than most Samsungs of the same timeframe (Samsung phones generally have very colourful and vibrant screens).

For video, it can take a 10 minute video. Haven't messed with the audio recorder too much, but the daytimer is awesome - gives you a lot more freedom than any other phone other than a smartphone, and Nokia still has the best contact list setup, IMO.

The other thing is, transferring contact lists from a Nokia to a Motorola is generally a big no-no; last time I did that, it doubled up my contact list on my SIM card because the (consumer) Motorolas have one of the worst contact list setups I've ever seen - simple, but very impractical for business purposes. Even though the Motorola is a Windows based phone, i don't know what the contact list is like.

But a lot of customer reviews on Phonescoop regarding the Nokia smartphones generally mention that when a customer switches off of motorola, one of the biggest reasons why is the contact list.

Also, GSM Motorolas tend to drop a lot of calls, even in areas with wicked reception. I've only had calls dropped on my 6620 when the system is down. This has more to do with the fact that Nokia uses an automatic tower search instead of something predefined like what's in the GSM Motorolas.

The other thing is resources; a Nokia S60 phone only needs 16 megs of ram. Even if they run a bit slow, they can multitask like you wouldn't believe. If the Motorola (or anything running Windows CE) has less than 64 MB of RAM, you're in trouble.

Oh, and voice dialing on the 6620 was generally fine as long as the word "call" was used as a sort of voicetag prefix. So when you record the voicetag, you'd tell it to, for example "call home". "call the house" might be better though.

Just thought I'd share my insights.
