Hi, I sell phones, one of them being the kx414. I used to sell motorola star tac's, till verizon stopped activaiting non gps phones, so I still have lots of customers wanting that model, and they all like it because it can be dropped without breaking. I now reccommend the kyocera 414 instead, but customers want to know exactly how durable it is. So, I am doing a stress test on one. I had one in bad condition- paint or something got inside and it covered the earphone jack, so I cant unlock it (you unlock it with a cable that goes in the earphone jack). I could install a new jack but I dont know how long it will last (phone) due to the paint. I also had a LCD which had some dead pixles. Though their is dry paint on some of the upper main board, it has full service (4/4 bars outside) I did a test call (*611) and the volume works. So on with the fun part
test 1-(after it was re-assembled with the lcd with a few dead pixles)
inside house service level: 3 bars (4th bar on and off)
threw out window
outside service level: 4 solid bars!
notes: uppon impact it rolled down the driveway about 15 feet (threw "out" not "down") the removeable faceplate came off, and had some body marks from the tar which is expected. Not even a single scratch on the display though.
test 2-
inside house service level: 3 bars (4th bar still on and off)
threw out window
outside service level: 4 solid bars once again!
notes: uppon impact it rolled down the driveway about 20 feet (threw "out" not "down") the removeable faceplate came off, and had some more body marks from the tar which is expected. Outer display still in perfect shape! Still makes test call.
test 3
inside house service level: 3 solid bars (4th bar on and off)
threw out window
outside service level: 3 solid bars, 4th on and off.
notes: A little more dammage this time. uppon impact it rolled down the driveway about 10 feet (threw "out" not "down") the removeable faceplate came off allong with the battery cover and the battery come out. The metal covering the components under the battery also got dented, I thought this would kill it (usually causes a memory problem and goes to data mode if that metal is dented) but it didnt. The speaker is a little faint, had to put the volume all the way up. Also, inside this now only has 2 solid bars, 3rd on and off
test 4:
sugestions? I was thinking maybe drop it in water and dry it out to see if its recoverable (I repair water dammaged phones so I know what I am doing) but that seams kind of borring, anyone have any ideas?

wow, I got mine at verizon a while back and they told me it was a solid phone that can take a few drops. I guess they were not fibbing me when they said that. not to get to crazy, but I saw a car throw a bottle out the window the other day and was shocked to see the impact- thethe cap shaddered thing rolled like crazy, almost caused an accident, i wonder if this phone would survive

I hated that phone with a passion, but on thing I'll give them is they are tough!
I actually dropped mine in a snow bank one night (came home drunk, fell in snowbank). About 36 hours later I was retracing my steps and noticed something in the bank, picked it up and it still worked (battery was dead, but it was the one that only held like 30 minuets of charge).
But no, they're tough as nails, I've even known a person that dropped his into a toilet (prior to using it
) and it still works fine.
