It LITERALLY arrived 5 minutes ago via FedEx so no review as of yet. I'll play with it and post something later on this eve. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHA! Hopefully someone else will get theirs today too.

Posted by: skirtchick

Sweet! Can't wait to read your review!

Please try to post pictures of it sitting next to some of your other phones, from different angles, as I'm really interested in just how big it actually is.

Posted by: whtrbt7

Wow, it comes with foam in the case. I wasn't expecting that. I thought that the unit would ship with a big box and then have everything separate. I didn't think that they would send the Rs232 cable with it too. It seems a little redundant since the USB plug is on the stand. Oh, almost forgot. There are USB charging cables for the Ericssons. I'll post a reputable site so everyone can get one. They are REALLY useful for travel. I travel with my laptop so I just use USB in order to charge the phone without taking up an extra outlet. It reduces weight and bulk especially wen travelling.

Posted by: AdmiralAK

hmm.... metroworks makes codewarrior if I am not mistaken. The developer p800 costs around 1200 is I am not mistaken, why not just wait to get the commercial unit which will be cheaper (well unless you are a developer) ???

Posted by: whtrbt7

The CodeWarrior Personal edition currently sells for around USD400. This accounts for the USD1200 cost since the P800 is USD800 retail OEM. The first few P800s in the USA will not be cheap. I expect prices of USD800-USD1100 on OEM. Contract prices will also vary due to dealer inconsistencies. I think my Master Dealer has one of the best deals around. He's carrying a Nokia 7210 for USD250 with contract. Normally, people get the Nokia 7210 for around USD300-USD500 with contract. He also has no hidden fees. The cost for the SDK is actually within range. If you look at the market, the P800 orders are piling up. People will pay premium to have one. Devaluation of the units will be rather rapid starting in Feb 2003 but by then, there should be something better coming along. Who knows, maybe Motorola's lengendary Paragon 2 will come out.

Posted by: kaneman

The unlocked P800 will be ~$800 when it rolls out (the paperwork inside says Christmas 2002 so I'm assuming within the next three weeks if it does roll out on time). IMO $350 is a reasonable price to pay to have it now vs. waiting for it to be available through normal channels and then trying to get one. Should SEMC have a hiccup, it may not debut until Jan or even Feb. It's also likely that when it first comes out the P800 will be sold for a premium as it is (at least here in the states where it won't be readily available) which means early adopters will be paying $1100 ANYWAY.

Posted by: skirtchick

I've been trying to read the piece of paper in one of the pictures you posted, which explains the unit's 'pre-commercial' status and seems to say that it can be be upgraded to the release firmware when it's available.

Would you be able to let us know what that piece of paper actually says?

Posted by: rog

And in this letter, there also seems to be some comment on the Release Date of the Commercial Version of the P800 (it says something "...Christmas...") Does it say "Before Christmas"?
Would be great if you could provide us those informations (can't wait to get my own on monday )

CHeers,
Rog.

Posted by: MrSavoy

Congrats on your P800 dude.

Posted by: dapope

Question, will we be able to flash this phone ? or, will it be necessary to send out?
adios

Posted by: kaneman

Here ya go. Small file sizes and text don't mix well but it's somewhat readable

Posted by: praetorianer

Hello

Sorry my english is not so well.....

Can you tell me : Is the software to Sync with the PC include...and have you test it.

greetings

Posted by: rog

@kaneman: thanks for the scan mate! So they expect the Commercial Version to be launched around christmas... that's interesting. According to a SE Sales Manager over here in Europe, it will be launched in minor quantities in selected countries before christmas, and the big roll out will be in February 2003

Well, we'll see.

CHeers,
Rog.

Posted by: dale9271

Kaneman you think someone will actually buy your p800 for $2500 off of ebay!?

Posted by: kaneman

Considering BengalBoy's used one was up to $2100 before the current bidder (zero feedback, IMHO it's bogus)... it's possible. The reserve is nowhere NEAR that, but if someone's in a hurry, I ain't gonna stop 'em. (Note that I'm not selling MINE... I ordered a third on the off chance it'd show up before commerical release. With any luck it'll sell at the Buy it Now price and I'll cover the cost of my P800 and all the shipping.)

Posted by: dapope

hehe, at least u posted some pictures be4 u set it up on ebay , i also see some1 [ unknown bidder ] just put a kabash on bengleboy's auction, by bidding $3,500
adios

Posted by: caff

kaneman.
You can now change your mobile profile and proudly include this P800 on your list !!!!!!!! You make us all envy !!!!!!!! Waiting for your review !!!!!!

Posted by: whtrbt7

BengalBoy is going to be happy if the bidder is legit. The reserve is also met. I'm crossing my fingers for him. I unfortunately don't have the patience or the time to be on E-bay. It seems like a real hassle since you never know credit ratings on people.

Posted by: rip

and thanks for all the info regarding the commercial release and pricing.

I guess i'm gonna add that to my profile too...no other BT products at that level yet??!

Posted by: Jalal

Congrats on your buy...

Posted by: kaneman

Unfortunately I haven't had much time to play with it so no long review yet! Still at work and it's 9:30 PM. I will say thus far that I love the phone. Audio quality is just awesome. Not sure about RF yet but I'll find out on the drive home. IMO it's a bit fiddly to use (menus, etc) but I think that's just me getting used to a new UI. Still, some things could be more intuitive. One thing I LOVE is the handwriting recognition. I have no idea what the alphabet is that it uses but I already am having 95% success at recognition. Size is perfect... it's much thinner than the Sidekick but about the same height and a bit narrower... MUCH more convenient than the Pocket PC Phone ed.

Posted by: caff

So how's the polyphonic ringtone?? Loud and nice?? Have you try the camera?? How's the pic quality ????? Is there a screensaver features ??

Posted by: dapope

hi kaneman, , do you think the hch 30 car handset holder will work with the p800 ?
adios
stan

Posted by: kaneman

I haven't seen the HCH-30 so I can't comment... and the ringtones are AWESOME!!! It'll basically take any MID or WAV file and the volume is LOUD, very audible even in noisy situations. The vibe is also very strong.

Posted by: dapope

how do you like the case that came with the p800 ?

Posted by: [MDS]

nice packaging....
congrats on your purchase... i feel happy for ya..

Posted by: whtrbt7

@ dapope

The HCH-30 will be compatible with the P800 since the top part is retractable. It should hold the P800 quite securely since the "pop-port" or whatever you call the bottom is quite sturdy. You know my feelings on the P800 supplied case already. If you like leather, the Vaja case for the Nokia 7100 series fits the P800. The design is rather solid and is structured with a belt clip.

Posted by: kaneman

The case that comes with it is utter crap... it's basically a cheesy nylon draw-pouch. I need something better. White Rabbit... where can I find the Vaja case?

Vaja cases can be bought at www.vajacases.com. Click on the holiday special link on the top of the page to get free customization on your case! I just got one for my Clie NX70V.

BTW, I came in late in the game and am trying to catch up on whats going on with these P800s. The guy who stole your pictures is selling his P800 for $500 Buy It Now. What the difference between his and the one you are selling (sold?) for a lot more?

-SHaque

Posted by: kaneman

Uh, ever heard of an Ebay scam? He's selling thin air. Basically he took my wording and pictures from my auction and threw in a few pics from various shows and the descriptions from some of the other P800 scam auctions. As of now there are only two real P800s for auction on Ebay. Mine, and BengalBoy's which is up to $3500.

EDIT : Look at the other auctions... up until now the seller hasn't had a transaction over $20 in value, and suddenly has 200 7650s and 30 P800s to sell??? I don't think so.

http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.d...sort=3&since=-1

Posted by: whtrbt7

@ Kaneman

Shaque gave you the right addy. Just check on the Nokia 7100 series case. If you don't believe my numbers, I suggest you double-check the measurements yourself. I'm only human so I'm not infallible.

@ Shaque

The one selling online is most likely a scam. Normally users that don't actually have units will steal photos from someone else's site in order to perpetrate the act of fraud. My policy is always be a skeptic until the real facts are revealed. That's probably why I don't E-bay.

Posted by: caff

kaneman,
So you really gonna sell your P800 ??????? Or just try your luck see if anyone would pay that much money for it ???? Have you play with your P800 enough to sell it ?????

Posted by: kaneman

No no no no as I stated before I bought an extra. My goal is to sell the extra for enough to cover the cost of both units (in effect getting me a P800 for free). If nothing else I sell it for what it cost me and I'm not out anything.

Posted by: rayed14

Have you found a way of setting delivery notifications on SMSs?

Posted by: caff

So there's no profile feature on P800 ?? So how do you check the software version on P800 since the key are different from ericsson phones, also how's the MP3 ?? Is the quality great ??

A 911 in NYC? Do you park it 6 months outta the year??? I KNOW you don't take it out when there's snow/ice on the ground... or if you do you're a madman... those beasts are hairy even in the dry.

Posted by: dapope

Not much of the snow and ice last few years up here, it stays mostly in the garage during the winter months.I've had a few 911's [ targa, coupe ] even had 356 cabriolet, back in the day . To be honest they handle the bad weather and snow very well,

u should do this in the testing threads...

Posted by: dapope

Your close MrS , im just a little closer to the water , take another guess, and kaneman, this photo's for you. who says they dont take em out in the snow . i actually think the 911 out handled any car in the deep snow, having its engine in the rear sitting on top of its wheels.

As i watched this forum it seems that ppl ordered before 23. nov got the phone after they have been placed in back order right?
Do you know exactly when they will get them in stock again?
Or can you send me sms (somebody who ordered and is in waiting list) when your order resumes?
Thanx and regards Spacer +35699868904 spacer.cc

i'll try to post some more pics later, i have to go now, i left it charging.

Posted by: kaneman

Hey Stan, notice the adapters are Rat Shack specials? Someone LITERALLY wiped out a Radio Shack, cut off the top of the card, and stuck 'em in the box! *ROFL* Look on the back and you'll even see the Tandy address.

Posted by: Spacer

Hmm this is discrimination ! somebody can order it somebody not.
I couldn't order it from here (malta) then i tried via Germany office
where it failed because it was "out of stock "
there is no tel.number to check directly ...
who is selling this bundle anyway? metrowerks, ericsson ,sonyericsson or digitalriver?...
Please somebody help me to get p800 so i can start coding
my soft!

Posted by: dapope

ya kaneman, just noticed that , let me just say, this is an awesome phone, has a great feel to it, not to large, fits very comfortably in my hand. I have some errands to do, and my battery needs to be charged, hopefully i'll post some more pics around 4 est.
i luv this phone [ so far ] rf is better than t68i, for sure

Posted by: Spacer

That would be nice if you post some pictures from your p800.. also can you tell me if you got memorystick duo and also
how big is internal ram of your p800 is it 32 internal with 12MB for applications? or it is 12MB + 16MB on memoristick?
Description on Eric. site was not clear about this.
also nobody was able to answer question if its possible to play mp3 songs ditrectly from memory stick (preproduction units couldnt but this pre commercial unit should

Posted by: dapope

ok spacer here u go, 12 internal with 16 ms duo card with adapter.
i'll try to post some more , but, i've been really busy today.

Posted by: dapope

im pretty sure u can do the mp3 off the duo, but i havent had enough time to play yet, i'll try to get to it later on.I need to print out the user guide and do a whole lot more reading on this new beast. I thing i will verify, if has the feel of a small phone, which is awesome, and seems very user friendly.

Posted by: Brimme

Great pictures !

Can you post some more ?

Posted by: dapope

here's another, but, i have to print out the user guide , and figure out how to enter some info.

I would spend the $1150 if I had it, but i'll just have to wait till it gets realesed.

Anyone wanna sell their used P800

Posted by: dapope

i've never sold anything on ebay, but, your right i should identify them. dam , what carrier do you have ? Right now im printing out 180 page manual to figure out how to enter my name in the dam phone.

Posted by: p8002k2

Pardon my dumb question, but are these pre-commercial
P800s locked or unlocked ? Which provider is the best value ?

Thanks

Posted by: dapope

these come direcly from SE,they are unlcked

Posted by: rudedog

Congrat guys on your new P800s

I just received conformation that mine has shipped, Hopefully by Wednesday or Thursday. I'm so existed I can't remember what type of shipping I ordered, LOL

Posted by: Espo

Where is everyone getting their P800's? Is everyone ordering the development kit for $1150?

Posted by: Spacer

Rudedog when did you place your order?

Posted by: dapope

ya espo, development kits from SE. If only it came with a had cover user manual, instead there were about 15 different manuals , on 3 cd's. i havent been able to find the locations for turning on the vibrater or changing ringtones yet, just printed out 200 page manual

Posted by: Espo

Once again...I WANT ONE :

Posted by: LostTexan

damnit, you know what I just realized? this phone is tri-band (meaning no 850mhz GSM)

Oh well I'll still get it when the price falls to $500 (w/ activation)

Posted by: Espo

What do u mean when the price drops to $500...it isn't even out yet with a set price...or is it? What provider is going to carry the P800?

Posted by: LostTexan

well I could buy it right now for $1100, I have heard rumors (ah yes rumors ) that Cingular will carry it in the 1st Quarter of next year.

Posted by: rudedog

I placed my order on wend Nov 27th

On Nov 28th I was told it was back ordered

Today Dec 2nd I received my e-mail. Stating that it has shipped.

Posted by: Bengalboy

Kaneman,
Congradulations on your P800, althought your time with this particular one was brief, hope you have got to use some though till your next one arrives.

DaPope, I have the manual if you need one, 1st edition draft for consumers.

Posted by: Afonso

If the P800's user manual provided with the SDK bundle is more recent than the "provisional" one that has been online on the FCC approval forms/site then I would be most gratefull if any1 of the lucky owners could post an URL to it.

Thanks

Posted by: LostTexan

What is the max resolution that the camera can take pics at?

Posted by: Afonso

640x480

Posted by: Tr0LL

Does anyone know if this is returnable? Any of you guys that bought it know the terms and conditions for returning?

Or at least, can you cancel the buy if it's not shipped before it is released.

I would hate to pay $1150 plus tax and shipping only to have it come out in the US for like $600-$800 before I even get it, or have it come out like 1 week later for much less.

Posted by: kaneman

I tried it out last night with a pair of headphones. I'm not sure if the P800 will output stereo (I was using a pair of headphones with a 3/32" stereo jack from a japanese Sony credit card radio... at least I THINK it's 3/32, it ain't the standard 1/8) and sound came from both ears (surprisingly enough considering that's a headset jack) but it was Mono. It sounded GREAT though... I need to get some MP3s on the memory stick and see how it does. Has anyone else noticed that the quality of the audio that comes out of the speaker is VERY good??? I'm very impressed.

Posted by: MrSavoy

Just out of curiousity, have any of you P800 owners tried the games? I thought the P800 had like doom and a few other games on it. Or at least downloadable. Any comments? Mark? Pope?

Posted by: dapope

MrSAVOY, I havent gotten around to the games yet, there is just so much to play with on this phone, it take a little getting used to[ a phone that does so much]

Posted by: rog

Actually, the games didn't come with the Developer Kit. They'll be in the Final Release only (at least, that's the case for my package. Anyone gotten the CD with the games??)

CHeers,
Rog.

Posted by: oneeyejack

how's the RF on the phone?? better than the t68i?

Posted by: kaneman

Chess and checkers came on my unit but otherwise, no games Oh well, patience until the release version rolls. As far as downloadable software, if anyone finds any let me know.

Posted by: Bengalboy

I played solataire and chess on the plane. The games were very entertaining and have great graphics. The "flight mode" is a great feature for traveling, turning the phone off but allowing the user to play games, listen to MP3's etc. The MP3 player is also very good with the headphones, but a application for adjusting treble, bass, etc. needs to be developed for that feature.

Posted by: whtrbt7

I think my post is long overdue on this thread. I jotted down some initial thoughts of the P800 on the following page. Just go there and see what you think. The directions to remove the flip are also there. I will post more pics as soon as I get a chance. Enjoy.

http://noirgroup.hypermart.net/p800a.htm

Posted by: rudedog

Has anyone tried to listen to MP3 threw their bluetooth headset?

I know this will drain the batteries on the headset, just wondering if this is possible.

Posted by: whtrbt7

Sorry Rudedog, it's not possible yet. Someone will have to design new software for that one. Bluetooth headsets aren't like normal headphones in that manner.

Posted by: rudedog

Thanks, it was worth a shot.

Posted by: Bengalboy

Actually RudeDog, that is a very good question as one of the engineers on the Bluespoon has stated that they are working on a MP3 player at Nextlink. I assume that it will be connecting through a bluetooth connection, maybe Jan will see this post and let us know exactly what their MP3 player will do and how it connects?

Hey, thanks for the review man. Yours touched on certain unique aspects the other reviews didn't. You mentioned typing emails on the Keypad. Does this mean that there's T9 in the unit? (yes, that same boring question again, but no one has given a constructive affirmative answer thus far.)

Thanks white rabbit.

Posted by: kaneman

White Rabbit I'm surprised you don't think the MP3 player/headphones combo sounds good? I have Etymotic ER4Ps with custom earmolds and while the Ericssons aren't equivalent I am VERY impressed with the stock headphones... decent bass extension and highs (well what highs there are that MP3 compression doesn't trash). What amazes me about the P800 is how LOUD the thing gets. For those that like to crank it I've never heard a portable device push so much sheer SPL through headphones. Not sure if the headphones are just hypersensitive or if the P800 has a serious headphone amp inside it but it gets LOUD and doesn't seem to distort at all. Once larger MS Duos roll out it'll make a great light-duty MP3 player. Also, apparently you can use MP3s as ringtones but they have to have certain attributes. I'll play more with this and see what I can find out. (I haven't cracked a manual yet so I'm sure some of this is documented... might help to read but I'm toooo hardheaded for that. )

On T9, I couldn't find an option for it. IMO you shouldn't need it though as the phone does very good handwriting recognition which is much faster than Tegic anyway. I may just not be looking int he right place. But one thing I DO know is that the more time I spend with the phone the more I think it's a revolutionary device. This truly blows the PocketPC Phone Ed away.

Posted by: Afonso

Is the User's manual shipped with the SDK bundle still the one that has "PRELIMINARY" all over the place?

Page 2 =
First edition (September 2002)
Publication number:EN/ LZT108 6039 P1A

???

Posted by: whtrbt7

The P800 does not exactly have T9. There is no predictive text input. It works exactly like the T68i when you have the flip closed. Very handy for quick SMS or E-mails.

The P800 sound from the headphones sound like what my gameboy headphones sounded like way back when it first came out. The quality was okie but nothing to get excited about. The volume is definitely loud. I'm trying to find a way to connect my nude Exs to the P800 now. I might end up splicing the actual headset/headphones.

P800 still ranks above the Pocket PC right now since the overall form factor is light years ahead. The only drawbacks I see right now are all software related. The potential for the P800 is excellent.

Posted by: rudedog

well I just received my P800.

Some initial reactions:

Same charger as my t68 "standard charger CST-13" with a domestic adapter ( included )
I have quit a number, of adapters : home, office, car, travel..This is nice. I don't have to spend any more money on charging the p800

The external antenna adapter, scares me. There should be a cover over the adapter on the phone. 1st thing I'm going to do while charging it will be find something to cover hole with so the center conductor does not get damaged.

Phone feels very nice, screen is awesome. Wish it had more colors but 4k is fine.

The only bad thing right now is the case. I did find someone selling a p800 case but it looks like it's for another phone. Just something to fill there p800 accessories page.

I did not receive my T-shirt, If I would have known they were not going to enclose the T-shirt I would not have ordered this phone.

More testing and comments soon.

Posted by: Brimme

Congratulations On your new phone! i'm realy jalous How long did it take to receive yur p800 from the moment you orderd it ?

Posted by: whtrbt7

I don't think anyone sells an official P800 case right now. I recommended the Vaja Nokia 7100 case because it fits the dimensions and the materials are pretty svelt.

Posted by: rudedog

It took 7 days including weekends.

I received a message from MetroWerks stating they ship them the say day if possible. The backorder status is bogus. Just a glitch in the system.

Thanks for the recommendation on the case. I will look into ordering one ASAP.

Posted by: dapope

i just got the vaja case, nice work, but, its about 1/4 to 1/2 inch to long on both sides, also, there is no cut out to insert a headset[no cutout on the sides], and, there is also no cut out on the bottom of the case, which you would use your fingers to pop the phone out , forcing it up from the bottom, so, basically , you have to stick your hand inside the case and pull the phone out, i show some pixs of my nokia case with t68i. So, if your in no rush, i would wait on a better solution.

Posted by: dapope

here's the t68i with the cut out to help remove the phone from the case.

Posted by: rudedog

Thanks for the pictures.

I think I'll wait until they release some custom cases for the P800.

anyone know how to attach the lanyard to the phone?

Posted by: dapope

rude, i was just gonna ask the same question

Posted by: whtrbt7

Dapope, the Vaja case is made of nice material right? I think the original intention of that case was to completely shield the phone from any foreign substances hence, no cut-out. It the lanyard that comes with the P800 supposed to attach anywhere? It made me scratch my head all day. I couldn't figure out where the darn thing was supposed to go. There's no hole on the case that comes with the P800 either.

Posted by: whtrbt7

What is everyone's max MB usage on GPRS in a month? Please post your phone model too.

The screen is very resilient. If you take a look at my review on http://noirgroup.hypermart.net you will see my opinions on the screen. The tool in the box on the other hand is not used for the P800. All you really need to take apart a P800 is a mini screwdriver and a T6 torx. My best guess is that the tool is for general usage. It's pretty compact and is like a victorinox knife.

Are you serious that the P800 does not have T9? You said that the P800 functions like the t68, but the t68 has T9?

The T68i has T9 since it has "predictive text input" When you turn off the T9 and use the multitap function, the P800 reacts in the same way the T68i does. Personally, T9 never really sped up my typing process so I used the multitap so I knew exactly what I was typing as I was typing.

Mobileguy, I talked to someone there the other day. As I was waiting for mine to arrive.
They said, all orders are being shipped the same day. They where / are having problems with the "backorder" showing up on orders.

So I would say, you should see it b4 Xmas

Good luck you wont be disappointed.
