Microsoft activesync 4/3.8 prolems.... (Can't sync/uninstall)

Ok so to begin, I just installed a fresh copy of windows XP home. I decided I'd try out Active Sync 4 with outlook 2003.
I get it installed and try to sync.. I get some error saying it can't access the resources nescessary. Restart the computer and if the problem persists go into outlook express, click on help then goto detect and repair.
I tried both detect and repair and tried to reset, still no sync action happening. I get fed up, I uninstall activesync 4, and try to install 3.8... It's now telling me activesync 4 is installed and I need to uninstall that before I reinstall activesync 3.8...
This is quite annoying, does anyone know how I could possibly fix this so I could sync with my phone again?

ActiveSync doesn't sync with Outlook Express...only Office Outlook.
Go to Program Files on your computer and delete the ActiveSync Folder, AFTER you uninstall ActiveSync. Reboot after you install ActiveSync, and reboot again after you remove the folder and then try installing again, if that fails, repeat what I said in the same manner but go into your computers registry and delete all keys that has anything to do with ActiveSync. If you choose to go this route MAKE SURE you create a System Restore point, not only that but if you Norton Ghost...make an image of your harddrive. If you delete the wrong key on your computer...your screwed without a system restore point or a hardrive image...unless you want to reinstall Windows XP Home.

active synch 4 will onlly synch for me if outlook is the default email programme which it isn't as I like incredimail, so I uninstalled to return back to 3.8 and you know what same chuffing problem as you fella think I'll just rip the guts out and start again after all my laptops due for a spring clean.

The thing is I can't even install 3.8 now because it's saying 4.0 is still installed meanwhile it's not..

ok here is what i did and it worked I had exact same problem....
goto c
rogramme settings and delete folder that say "microsoft activesynch"
reboot computer.
install 3.8 when it gets to the screen that says in stalling in c:/programme settings/microsoft activesynch. do NOT click next instead hit browse add 3.8 to the directory name an then continue the install.
every thing will install nice and neatly as they are not cross referenceing old file in the registry... that is is if you dan' mind the extra files that effectivly redundant.

Active Sync 4.0 works great with my MPx220 and office outlook is not my default email program. I use gmail and groupwise with my MPx220 and Active Sync 4.0 works great as did 3.8
I had no problems with either version

are they not both server based email programmes like yahoo and hot mail ? ie you have to visit a website to view them
Incredimail is programme based and active synch says that outlook must be the defualt but only wih 4.0 not with 3.8 or it is for me and nby th looks of things some others...Your just lucky wanna buy me a lotto ticket?

ok scrub everything prior... install 4.0 again then but before doig so open outlook do detect and repair then set as default... when option to set up email don't choose to continue with no email facility... continue install of active synch... in synch options choose all except email...if you use another email client as i do then i imagine you would not be synching emails as i do too. it now works just fine and dandy.
also if you install rutten soft homescreen and set your zip applet (objectzip winrar etc etc) to function with .cab files your PC left click gets the option
"install homescreen/.cab to mobile"
no more copying to device via active synch unsure if it works with bluetooth but just fine with USB try the bley and let me know i might consider the upgrade then
