Making the switch from Nextel... Does Cingular have any decent phones!?!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

All I need is a decent looking flip phone with a speakerphone and good reception... is that too much to ask for?

Posted by: killah21

Your asking if Cingular has any decent phones!?!? Only the best lineup from any carrier atm.

Posted by: elushon

Cingular does have about the most thorough (as far as brands and form factors) phone selection out there. Instead of asking is it too much to ask...Start looking around.

This is what everyone says about Cingular yet I cannot find anything that fits...

Looking at their website and reading the reviews here at HoFo...

Most of their line up seems to be nothing special?

LG C1300 .. cheap and flimsy..
V180.. sucks
X497 and LG C2000 both have a thread to them here and people say they are crap.
C207, 3120, etc.. are not flip
leaves the RAZR, V551, V220, and E317...

I dont like the Razr, don't like the V551 looks, V220 is build like crap, E317???

You have definate opinions about almost every Cingular-line phone, don't you?
Maybe it would be easier to go to eBay, buy yourself an unlocked phone that you like (if there is one), get a free phone from Cingular with a new contract that you can use for a backup, and put your Cingular Sim card in your new phone of choice...and you are set!!!

I want the same features, clamshell & speakerphone. I tried alot of Moto's, poor reception, weak speakerphone's. I then found the S/E Z500a, great reception and the best speakerphone in a clamshell for Cingular. I like not having the external antenna & the camera is a bonus I thought I'd never use but find myself using it quite often.

I just switched over from Nextel and am getting the v551. My father has had one for a while so I've played with it and really gives me everything I need (flip, camera, bluetooth and data, etc...). Have you actually gone and used some of these phones? (Or found a friend with them and played with it a little)

Granted I was coming from an i90c (not even color screen), so anything extra in a phone at this point is gravy.

Cingular should be coming out with the Nokia 6102 flip phone this month.

^And don't forget, the Nokia 6682, hopefully.

There are a LOT more GSM phones than are listed on Cingular's site. Just look for quadband GSM phones, or any triband GSM that has the 850 & 1900 bands. Some of the most popular phones are not those offered on the website. Coming from Nextel, I can understand that shopping at places other than the site and eBay may be new to you.

Yes, you will often find folk griping about individual phones here. But, I would not base my choices on that. Folk typically come to these forums to b*tch and find answers to problems. The thousands who do not have problems never post here. I've been following the Nextel forums too and there's quite a bit of griping about phones over there too.

I have never heard much about exceptional phones in the Nextel lineup. I have Nextel service on my Blackberry 7520 and I have no gripes about the service. But I couldn't find a Nextel phone that I would want to carry around. They all seemed huge to me.

Of course, Cingular GSM may not be the plan for you. That is personal too.

If you buy an unlocked phone, why would you then get a contract rather than just getting the unlocked phone activated and be contract-free. Just asking to make sure I'm not missing anything....

I guess you could go Cingular-monthly instead of signing for a 1-2 year contract, but I think you would have to have a Cingular sim card to be compatible with Cingular service, and the free phone with a contract would give you that...plus give you a handy backup phone in case your new unlocked phone had to go to the repair center or something like that.

It was obviously too much to ask for from Nextel.

PWN3D!

also, as has been stated in threads before, if you activate with no contract, you don't get the promotional elements of the rate plan, which currently is unlimited M2M. I would find an agent or someone who'll give you a free phone on a one-year.

If it's too much to ask from two different carriers, I'd start thinking the problem isn't with the handset selection from the carriers, but with the user . . .

LOL, yeah really.

Coming here w/ a "is this so much to ask for" type of attitude will really only get you flamed, if I where you, just as another poster prior to me said, go on ebay, find a phone you like, and make sure it's unlocked - then go signup for cnglr service. Use phonescoop.com to search for a phone w/ features you want. there's also mobileburn.com and i'm sure plenty other sites too.

I was with Nextel and now with cingular. the blk razr v3 is one of the best phone i used in a long time. I got nothing againts nextel but service got so bad in my area i pay them $200 just to get out of my contract, plus i got my razr for free. beat that Nextel.

two things
first - the Samsung e317 doesn't have a speakerphone despite the fact a Cingular rep told it me did last fall when I was looking to switch
second - I would suggest perusing howardforums.com.com and specifically investigating the Motorola v635. It's $229, unlocked and quad-band.

The beauty of GSM is that you can use just about any phone you want. Good luck in your search.

reason I'm getting rid of Nextel is because of service suddenly sucking after years of being satisfactory.
I have an i860 right now.. it's great in all aspects. Even has too much. I really am not that picky. I'm going by what you guys post here.

I was not trying to flame, people are getting offended for no apparent reason like I just cussed their mother out. I just posted the things I'm looking for and just looking for suggestions of what's good. I don't even know what else is out there or where to find it. Don't want to buy something off ebay that will turn out to be a problematic phone with common issues.. thus I'm asking you experts first

Hi, I second the good opinion of the SE z500a. Mine is awesome. I also have a v551 that I like, but I notice you said you didn't want one of those. Try the z500a, you have 15 days to return it.

thanks, I'm looking into it

does the Z500 come in any other colors? I don't like that blue outside part.. same with the v551.

also, how clear is the speakerphone? is the ring volume good?

thanks

Posted by: cgd

My z500 is silver, I haven't seen any blue ones. The speakerphone and ring volume are great IMO.

or is yours different?

Posted by: cgd

I agree that yours looks like it may be blue, but the one I have is definitely silver.

yeah most look like they have the dark/blueish cover...

but i found a few that look better...

looks pretty good to me

I had the V551 for about 6-8 weeks. It was ok. I then got the candybar Sony Ericsson T637 and have had that since late March/early April. Good phone but I miss some of the features like speakerphone and a better camera. The Nokia 6102 looks really nice since I did not like the Motorola menus. Have speakerphone, Nokia menus, Nokia reception, better build quality. The only thing it is missing is Bluetooth. But it has Infrared, so I can beem ringtones, themes, and pics to and from by bros Dell 8600 laptop since it has builtin IrDA. My iBook have Bluetooth 2.0.
