No More BCC on T-Mobile!

--------------------------------------------------------

Just read the upgrade info for T-Mobile on http://www.t-mobile.com/bisupgrade/

There's a major change to the system on October 2 which gets rid of the web client completely and and, amongst other things, they are removing the ability to send Auto BCC messages!

For those of us who don't want to fully integrate mail this is a real downgrade.

I forward my e-mail to the Blackberry through a backup GMail account - it does a great job of cleaning out the spam before it goes to the Blackberry. I then Auto BCC'd all my replies to my normal e-mail account (where a filter put them in the sent folder).

Now I won't be able to do that!

Anyone know more or have any suggestions?

I may be interpreting this incorrectly, but it looks like they're actually improving the integration with external email accounts. Read this excerpt:

E-mails sent, received, or deleted on your handheld will reflect changes at the original e-mail account – no need to manage the same e-mail account from two different places.

So it seems that you can retain sent messages at the original email account--thus eliminating the need to auto BCC your email.

Again...I may be interpreting this incorrectly, but it seems to me to be an improvement.

I agree with jase88, it looks like the BB will work directly with the mail servers which, in my opinion, is a hugh improvement.

It isn't clear how this is going to work, will the BIS still check the pop accounts every 15 minutes and download messages to its server to be pushed to the device and synced, or will the device check the email accounts every 15 minutes. The latter could impact battery life, I know it did on my PocketPC.

That's a downgrade in other respects though. I forward mail to my Cingular BlackBerry address because that's the only way to get realtime delivery from my e-mail provider. Otherwise I'd have to wait for it to poll every 15 minutes. Then I may as well get a Treo 650 from Sprint with unlimited data for $10/month.

The blackberry device does not check for email--that's the beauty of Blackberry: Email is pushed to the device. Therefore no impact on battery life or data usage.

Forwarding will still work, based on what I read. This shouldn't impact your present method of pushing email down to your device.

Thanks all; I sure do hope your interpretations are right.

I'm sure it will be clearer to me later, say on October 3rd...

I should have mentioned the other half of my poor-man's BES solution. I Bcc my regular e-mail address and sort it into my sent items. So I have a store of all e-mail in my regular account and the BlackBerry. Then I never check the webclient and manage BlackBerry mail only on my handheld. So the loss of Bcc would break my current method.

Ditto here. Our company uses a 3rd party web hosted email service. I currently access my emails through BWC and POP access. I BCC myself on all outgoing messages from my BB so I can save them in Outlook Sent Items when I update my Outlook on my laptop.

I also use the Signature option which is currently part of BWC. I wonder how that will be handled.

from another forum...
After many inquiries and e-mails, I was glad to see that we may not lose Auto BCC for long:

Nick:
Thanks for your note inquiring about the changes to Blackberry Internet Service for T-Mobile (BIS-T). I did some investigation regarding your concerns:

#1) Conversion from Blackberry Web Client (BWC) to BIS-T. I apologize for the short notice of the impending change, but their should be no impact to your BWC setup when moving to the BIS-T. The service settings will be moved to the BIS-T service; the service book on your Blackberry will be seamlessly updated.

If your Blackberry is using an version V3.6 or older, then the service book must be manually accepted onto your Blackberry.

#2) Removal of Auto BCC feature.
We have re-evaluated the customer feedback and are working with RIM to get the feature re-instated for the OCT 1 release. At this time, I do not know if the code can be changed; but I will let you know either way once I know. In the event, that it does not make the OCT 1 release, rest assured that it will be added in a future release.

One of the features of BIS-T is that there will no longer be a requirement to have the tmo.blackberry.net email address. (Although it can still be used.) When responding to an email from your email address, the correct email address will now be used in the sender field. This is a particular useful if you have multiple email accounts and wish to respond accordingly. This will make use of a new technology (Protocol Engine) in which it will appear to the ISP that a real logon session is in progress. Therefore, all email will appear to be sent from ISP and if the ISP has a copy sent feature, then your sent email will indeed be saved at the ISP.

I apologize that it took so long to get you an answer. It is the usual practice from RIM to refer to the carrier any questions about a carrier branded product. T-Mobile has added enhancements from the standard RIM offering. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact myself.

Thank you for your continued support as a T-Mobile Customer.

Wirelessly posted (Blackberry 7290: BlackBerry7290/4.0.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

Paraphrased from the TMO blurb, In addition, any email sent directly to your @serviceprovider.blackberry.net address will be automatically deleted after thirty days. They will remain on the handset, but attachments WILL BE LOST!

To me this is a serious downgrad if this is the direction RIM is going with other providers.

If you open the link below theres mention of being able to change BlackBerry mail settings from a link within T-Mobile. Alas, I have not been successful in finding this link.

This is important for those BlackBerry devices that are not supposed by T-Mobile such as the BB built-in and BlackBerry Connect devices.

Can anyone shed some light on this?
