Prepaid phones & sim cards

A friend of mine is giving me his prepaid t-mobile phone, with no sim card of course. I'm already on a plan with t-mobile. Can I put my t-mobile sim card in his prepaid phone, and it work?

So then as long as you have the same provider, it will work, am I correct? Keep in mind, I'm not wanting to go prepaid. I want to stay on my contract with t-mobile. I just like his phone. 
But if that's the case, why are prepaid phones so much cheaper? Because they figure they'll get ya when you buy the prepaid sims?

That should be correct.
Thats strange, i cant see the logic behind it.
In my country prepaid phones cost a lot more.
