ringtones on vx5200

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: acxnpa

The vx5200 is a good phone, but it definitely has its downsides. With my old vx6000, I could send myself ringtones in picture messages and then save them and use them however i wanted to. Now, with the vx5200, the only way to get ringtones seems to be GIN. The midis I sent to myself in picture messages can only be used for sending in other messages or just listening to them. There doesn't seem to be a way to assign them as ringtones, they don't show up under the ringtones menu, and when I access them and hit options, there's no option to set them as ringtones ! Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, I'm a newbie when it comes to this kind of stuff!
Please help if you can, and if you know of any sites that offer free ringtones (not those annoying ringtunes things, which i personally can't stand, I just like good old polyphonic ringers!)
Thanks in advance, and sorry for the rambling!

I just got the 5200 last week. Still within my time to return the whole mess which I'm about to.

I was looking at ringtones and got frustrated so I contacted LG and got:
**********
Dear Michael, Thank you for inquiring of LG Electronics. Unfortunately, voice recordings can not be set as ringtones. To record a voice recording, please use the following procedure: menu/get-it-now/get-tunes-tones/my sounds/record new (follow the screen prompts). These recordings can not be set as a ringtone. The owner's manuals are printed prior to release. The only files that can be set as ringtones, are files downloaded through Verizon's Get-It-Now feature. Thank you again for inquiring of LG Electronics. (delete name)
*******
also
*******
All listed models allow you to set voice memos as ringtones if you wish. I apologize for the inconvenience. Our phones are made according to the service provider's specification. As such, the functionality of your phone is the mere design approved not only by your service provider, but by the FCC.
*********

To me this whole mess is a step in the wrong direction. But for the phone companies and those selling ring tones it's big business. They took what customers could do and made money off of it and took it away from them.

I recorded a voice memo but as yet found any place to set it as a ring tone. I'm talking to my provider on my way home. Unless there is some software to connect via a cable, record sounds and set them as a ringtone I think this is a huge RIP.

Hey, I found this on E-Bay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...item=5809284483
Looks like they are confident it will support the 5200. They seem to have a guarantee.

If anyone gets one Keep us all posted.

I received my cable and CD from ecitywireless last week for my vx8100. Seeing this thread, I plugged my wife's vx5200 into the computer with the same cable and the computer recognized it, but BitPim did not. I will keep playing to see if I can figure it out. By the way, ecitywireless had this to me fast and was very courteous. If you are looking for a data cable, I wouldn't hesitate buying from them.

I've been hearing of people using BitPM with success but just as many saying they're not. Have you tried a newer version of BitPM from their site or selecting a phone model that's closer to what the VX5200 is?

Ecitywireless sells a bundle for the VX5200. You might be able to find out through them what the settings need to be. They could drum up business as I know lots of people trying to get this to work.

Hello,
In reference to the postings - I as well have recently received the same eBay data cable from ecitywireless. (SUPER FAST SHIPPING!) - just a heads up - EMAIL THEM DIRECTLY!! I got it for less than 1/2 of what people bid on them for.
Like the previous guy posted - the BitPim does not work. After confirming which port the phone is plugged into - you must select the actual phone - no vx5200 - the other choices won't work.

I downloaded the QPST drivers - and was able to have my phone "talk" to my desktop utilizing the QPST explorer. I can see my phone's files on my desktop - I can download the camera pix to my desktop - but so far I am unable to upload anything. Everytime I upload - the file SHOWS UP in the phone directory on my desktop - but it has yet to show up in my phone as a choice to select. I will keep trying till I get it to work - but several times I get the "SERVICE REQUIRED" on my phone after messing with it. Power cycling gets rid of it and it works fine.......so far.

Research tells me I seem to have to convert files to a *.desc format. If anyone is familiar with this - PLEASE!!!! Definately could use some pointers.
Thanks,

-Mike

You might try reading some of the tutorials from http://www.lgphone.info/ as I seem to remember reading something about some of what you went through. I think there was something about it having and .id or .dat file, similar to a pc that keep records of the file. You have to remove it, reboot your phone for the files to be listed right. Of course backing up the original. Can't remember exactly so check up on it. Don't take my word for it. Just thought it might help you find what I had ran across.

I received my cable yesterday and used BitPIM and worked great. I put ringtones on all 3 of our phones.

Michael

Posted by: mikemtglo

Hey Michael,
Which phone did you set BitPIM to use? Any special settings etc., you did to get it to work?
Thanks!!
-Mike

Posted by: mrmonteith

You set it to "Other CDMA Phone", and you have to click browse to browse which ports are available. For mine it was "LG CDMA USB Modem Diagnostic Serial Port Drivers (WDM) (COM5).

I'm trying to work on a write-up, other than the one in my group hopefully to try and get posted to all the forum so I don't answer the same questions over and over.

I got my VX5200 last week. I am not liking what I am reading about the ringtones, etc. Michael, Where did you get the data cable? Can you send me that link. I am having trouble finding one that isnt 30-40.00. (I would get the one at Verizon if I had to pay that) Also what software will I need?
I have never owned a phone with downloadable features before, so I am quite new to this. Thanks for the help!

Shelly,
I didn't at first either. But also don't take well to someone trying to charge me to add something to my phone that you should be able to do yourself. So I got a cable from Ebay. If you search for VX5200 data cable or VX5220 usb cable. I ended up paying I think around $12.44 for cable with CD and that included shipping and insurance from suresurfer I think was the name. I downloaded BitPIM which is a freeware software but you can also use QPST which is also freeware will work.

I found some .mp3 files from movies etc. that I liked, renamed them to .mid and uploaded them to my phone. Much better than the keyboard type midi ringtones. You can have real sound. Not to much MUCH cheaper.

But you can also put pictures on the phone that you can use for your background screen as well. I'm hoping to hear from the forum owners about posting the steps. Otherwise I have them in my group.

Hey, this way you can brag that you did yourself.

Shelly,
It's supposed to be http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VX5200Phone
It took mine about 5 days USPS, you might try something faster if you're wanting it faster.

got my cable from suresurfer saturday. im in ring tone heaven.... lol

Posted by: mrmonteith

LOL, makes you feel good doesn't it? I'm working on getting some songs into .mp3 so I can listen to them during boring meetings. lol Turn my phone into and mp3 player. That and if I can figure out how to get Java apps and games on my phone. That one is going to be a bit harder. I'm also playing with recording on my pc to record ringtones and sounds that I like from movies, etc.

ecitycitywireless on eBay has auctions for the VX5200 cable and a CD with all the software you will need to download tones on your phone. The link to their store is http://stores.ebay.com/eCity-Wireless and just search VX5200 and you should find the auctions. I haven't tried this myself but I ordered it and I have heard from other people this works. The price is around 14-16$ which is going to save me a lot of money. Anyone else tries this, let me know how it works.

Posted by: mrmonteith

Yes, I know some people in my Yahoo group that can probably help you with that.

LOL.. Well, I'll be getting my free LG VX5200 on Tuesday or Wednesday.. I hope it's worth it. I'll already have the cable for it, since it uses the same one as the LG VX8100 and the LG VX9800. I'll play around with it once it arrives. My mother has already been looking at ring tones.. (this was a birthday present to her)

Hello,

I see that I am about year late on some of these posts! I am new with Verizon wireless and we have the vx5200 phone. I just ordered the cable that I need. Is it all pretty much self explanitory and easy to use? Will I have to download any software? Sorry, just got the phone the other day, and hate the ringtones! A friend of mine recommended this Forum. If someone could help, I would appreciate it!

Thanks,
Janel

Help! Okay, I am at the BitPim webside getting ready to download, and the next screen wants me to pick a host from sourceforge.net? Any suggestions what to do? Do I pick one of the two from North America? I'm sorry, just trying to get more ringtones!

Thanks
Janel

Pick the closest one to you.

Thanks for the help! If I have anymore q's, I shall ask them here!

:-)

Help someone please? Okay, I have attempted to order usb cables for the LGVX5200. One company sent one for the VX7000 and the other for the VX6100,Vx4700,VX4650 and the LGVX8000. Each time the invoice states for the LGVX5200, but neither software lists my phone! Am I missing something? Does anyone know of a reliable source to get the correct software and cable? Ugh! I just want ringtones! HELP!

Thanks,
Janel

Posted by: Celladictive

Hmm.. I ordered one for my 9800, and it's the same cable as the 5200, it can also be used on the 8100 as well.

Posted by: Redregal1991

Okay, so the cable is okay on any phone, but when I went to acutally load the cd that is supposed to have the ringtones and stuff I can't pick my phone off the list. From what research I gather I cant use another phone just because! I understand Bitpim, I understand that the cable is just a cable. So now how do I go about getting ringtones? If the CD does me no good, that's okay, cause I have a cable. But. ohhhhhhh I hate Verizon...I just want to get ringtones! I don't want to pay for them!!!!

I'm set on a cable and bitpim, just need software to get ringtones?? Oh, anythng to get ringtones!!!

Thanks,
Janel

Posted by: rn45

I suppose I'll have to get the cable as well. I e-mailed 2 ringtones to my phone and that's where they stayed. I can hear them if I play them from the message folder, but they will not show up as ringtones. Oh well...

The VX4400 was the best phone I ever had.

Posted by: mrmonteith

On some of the other phone models there is a function in the menu to save the sound in other places, such as ringtones. On this phone it stays in it's own folder so you can't make it to where it's a ringtone. You definately need a cable.

BUMP!

Hi all - this thread has been quiet for eons (OK, 2 weeks) - I'm wondering how it's been going for those of you wanting to upload ringtones from a PC. I just ordered a data cable off Ebay (thanks to you all! $1 for the cable and $7 for shipping - go figure!) and am ready to get Bitpim.

Do you all have any tips for a newbie? Has anyone gotten this to work cleanly (I'm guessing MrMonteith has...)

This is for my wife and son's VX5200's - I figure for the cost of a few 20 second ringtones from Verizon I can pick up the cable and have them make their own ringtones with Motorola Phone Tools!

(assuming I can figure this out, kind of a big assumption )

Posted by: ghost640

Just got a note from the Ebay cable seller that my purchase is bonded for $25000.

That's great for a $1 cable...

Howdy all, I'm new to the forums and have found alot of great info. I just ordered my data cable from ebay. Seems like a good deal and the CD that comes with it looks good! I'll post results...

Got the cable today. This one charges up the battery too! The disk that came with it contained the USB drivers for my 5200, plus Bitpim 0.8.08. Due to the multitude of instructions, it was rather confusing at first as to how to get everything to work, BUT IT DOES WORK!!! There's a step that seems to be missing in the process of getting bitpim to recognize the phone: you have to install the drivers/bitpim, reboot the computer, THEN plug in the cable and phone. Works great!
Now I'm figgerin out bitpim. I wanna delete the factory ringtones, PIX, etc., but can't find them in the system filedirectory. Anyone know where these reside and under what file extension?
Hats off to Dwoods and his cable/disk setup.

No fair - I'm still waiting for my cable - it's not even in the tracking system yet! Guess I ordered from the wrong vendor on Ebay... Glad to hear it's working for you!

Ernie,
I just got my cable working today, so I don't really know very much about all this.

But you asked about deleteing the factory stuff. I don't know about the ringtones, but you can delete the pics. Just find the pic you want to delete. Click OK to view it, click options with the right soft key. Number 7 is the erase option. Click 7, then yes to erase. You may can do something similar with the ringtones, but I don't know.

Hope this helps.

Most of the phones Verizon has now, you CAN NOT send ringtones to yourself, because when you do, it saves them to the "SOUNDS" folder..

So far, I've had NO problems with the one cable I have.. it works with all 3 of my phones.

I purchesed a data cable from ebay cost like $10.00 came with CD downloaded BITPim pluged it in using WINXP PRO SP2 found and installed new hardware opened BITPim follow the instructions found phone ok I upload ringtones to my phone all the time. I also use a program I found on the net to record anything that comes over my soundcard and use that to make my ringtones. The program "AUDIO RECORD WIZARD" cost $25 but gives you the option to try which I do not sure how long the try will continue to work without buying. Again it works great.

Posted by: miniabbot

Hey all,

Where do i get the drivers for the 5200? BitPim doesnt see it and i think its because i cant get the phone installed.

Thanks

Posted by: crazywoman

You may have to join the group, but you can get the drivers here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VX5200Phone/ It is free to join, and lots of good info on the 5200 phone. It is set up for the VX5200 spefically. (Verizon)
You didn't specify if this is what you have. (I can't see while I'm in here typing if you have an avatar, and if it shows.) If you happen to be with a different company it may be a little different.

The drivers will be in the file section. There is a link on the left side of the page.
