Kyocera Slider REMIX

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: DamnCellPhone!

Got one! Nice phone but hell on the battery. Reception is much better than on the original slider and I'm guessing that could be contributed to the fact that Kyocera used the same new antenna that is with the Kyocera SoHo. Camera is nice at 1.3mpx - settings allow you to change to 4 different resolutions and will hold 128 pics on internal memory at lowest resolution - 28 at highest and best resolution. Records video too and it is clear and crisp video. Haven't gotten a transflash memory card yet for my Remix but will because it's the only way you can use the internal mp3 player. Nice that in the box was a USB data cable and software! No more searching eBay for data cables and no more searching Google for drivers! Kyocera kept all of the great things I love about the software such as a tip calculator so you know exactly how much to tip your nice waiter/waitress and how much your friend should pay on the bill too! haha Still comes with the same lame games (tetris, 21) but Brew can fix that. Haven't had time to play with ringtones or graphics.

Any questions?

Does it have Mp3 ringtones?and Where did you get it from????lol
How much was it?

Like I said, I haven't had time to play with ringtones and graphics. It comes with polyphonic midi ringtones.

I'm with Cellular South. Here, it's $299 full price, $199 w/ 1 year contract and $149 with 2 year contract. I have a business account with 6 different numbers (6 employees) so ya know, to keep me happy and keep my business, I get good deals that most people won't. Let's just say it cost me the gas to get to the store. *wink*

one reason to move to the south:

get the slider remix before the major carriers out here in the west carry it!

Posted by: Fletcho'

do alltel have the slider remix yet or thge jet mobile

Posted by: jjdu4

Alltel doesn't have either but I hope they show up someday!

Alltell, or any other carrier for that matter, won't have Jet because Jet is a version of the Remix designed only for Amp'd Mobile - different software and function services.

Posted by: Fletcho'

Ok Will The Phone Have T2t,or Do You Know Of Any Phone Come Out That New ,with Alltel That Will Have T2t.

Posted by: Hunt4m3x

****ing verizon better come out with it.

My wife's good ole' Cell South 3585i came another step closer to biting the dust today. She basically has to get a new phone in the next two days because it's our main phone. The reception was always great until our 2 year old threw it down and now the reception is bad.

How does this Slider Remix compare to, say a Nokia 3585i or 3205 (what I have) with Cellular South? Their service here in Grenada is awesome so there are no dead spots, but she does travel out of town a little ways so would need something as good as her Nokia probably.

Thanks,

Tyson

Posted by: rasauq

alltel is getting it (they might wait until the bluetooth one comes available)
verizon is getting it
amp'd is getting the jet (evdo version)
virgin mobile is getting it (they are calling it the slider sonic, its got better buttons)

mp3 ringers it can do, but you have to cheat. if you are using MPT its still easy. use the software to cut out the part of the mp3 you want to use as a ringer, save it as a new mp3 file. then rename it to a .mid. then upload it using the file manager thingy. then it works.

using kwpst you can unlock its ability to store mp3s on the main memory, so you dont need a memory card. but its still only 16mb internal memory, so you might as well get a memory card for music.

hey, i was wondering if you could shed some light on the mp3 ringers for me. i just got this phone yesterday, and i'm trying to transfer some songs. however, when i use the file manager, it tells me the midi can't exceed 64kb. i made a 30 second clip and it was 600 kb. i was hoping i wouldn't have to downsample the quality, so i was wondering if you encountered the same problem. thanks

Anyone know where I can get the KYOCERA Mobile Phone Tools???
Or even the USB drivers..... I have the phone and USB cable but no software

Posted by: DamnCellPhone!

Damn, just read where this same exact phone is coming out with bluetooth in November... wtf?? i'm gonna be pissed if Cellular South doesn't let me exchange it.

To DocFong, the phone comes with the mobile phone tools software that is specific to the remix phone.. it's on a CD.. if it wasn't in your box, take it back and exchange it.

jjdu4... im guessing you mean work? im a manager with a nationwide gas station chain and am currently running one of their stores in meridian until the store's own manager returns from a surgery.

Just curious if you were in the wireless business....Got to see the alltel's version of the slider remix on Thursday.....dang it looks good.....all black with Bluetooth. Due out next month......

Posted by: cheech_

So does the software will let you upload pics/vid clips from your PC as well as take ones captured from the phone and transfer to your PC? Does anyone know if you can talk with handsfree while it is closed and if you can make calls on it without being open like the siemens sl56? If you can make calls on it with it being closed then I'm sold. The mp3 part I don't really care much about since I've got an ipod.

Posted by: GTcruiser33

yeah you can talk with it closed no problem, i would assume that wouldnt be a problem with the headset then either....

Kyocera wireless PST 3.8.18

Posted by: chulogordito

Another satisfied C-south customer here (In Laurel).
My Audiovox 8900 was stolen at a Walmart when I was visiting my family at the Mexican/US border (staying in Mexico the whole time, but my phone was stolen in Texas. Go figure.

I've had a good experience so far with the week I've had with my Slider Remix. After fumbling around with my cable I got from a techie friend down on the coast, and finding drivers, and using Bitpim and god knows what else, I was happy to see that it came with the data cable and software. I figured out the cheat with renaming mp3's to mid, but would be interested in finding out anything else about this neat phone.

yup yer right
midis are typically small so mPT recognizes this and wont let you transfer big ones
rename them to .imy instead
(iMelody)
imy files are really supposed to be polyphonic, but mPT doesnt know the difference. but the phones sound-playing engine does.

A few quick questions: Is Verizon Wireless going to carry this phone? If yes, does anyone know it will be available?

Posted by: turbopeach

I had no luck at all renaming my mp3 ringers to midis or getting my Remix to use my mp3s saved as "my sounds", what did work was converting my mp3 ringers into pmd files.
So how do you add games and apps to this phone using my usb cable? Does this phone use jar files?
By the way I love this phone, but I am really afraid that one drop to the ground and she will be dead forever....looks very frail..

I second this.

Posted by: turbopeach

I actually took the time today to seach info on
Brew and answered my own question about games and such, my bad.
So basically if you have brew you are screwed when it comes to games? No way to put them on the phone your self with out downloading through your phone and paying a monthly charge or a one time charge?

Me too. Does anybody know? I REALLY am anxious to get my hands on one cuz I need to pass my phone down through the hand-me-down line. My sister broke her LG VX600 in half recently, so living has been rough for her.

Posted by: SoLJaH

i have the jet for amp'd and the whole UI runs on BREW... trust me... we're trying to figure out ways to get around paying for games =D cant give any info yet cause brew service for amp'd is going through new builds almost daily so we haven't really had a chance to check it out

Posted by: DamnCellPhone!

was told this week that the bluetooth version of this phone wouldn't be offered by cellular south until february 2006...

Posted by: DamnCellPhone!

also, odd thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I was bored and decided to launch the web browser, knowing full well that cellular south has never offered internet on their phones even tho the phones came with web browsers.

OMG!! IT WORKED!

Yes, it loaded Cellular South's WAP home page. I changed the homepage to Google's WAP and now when I startup my web browser, it goes right to Google where I can search, find addresses and phone numbers, and use Google's mobile search engine that turns regular web sites into cell phone viewable sites!

FINALLY!! When I was in with my rep, he tried it on his Nokia flip and it wouldn't connect. I'm assuming it's only working for the Remix and the Audiovox Blackberry type thingy they have.

Nice to see internet working on a Cellular South phone, none the less.

Ok. Where are you in the C-south?

I tried this too, to no avail. I'm in southern/central mississippi.

Schweet. Not working in Laurel. I have a meeting in Jackson next week...I'll try it then and report.

I remember when Brew first came online, my friend who works on towers etc down on the coast said they let them have a Brew free-for-all. I'm wondering if they are just letting it run while they're tweaking service...

Does anyone know anything about the expected availablity of this phone?

Posted by: Videogamegod89

ik have one with Virgin Mobile and i think it is safe to say that it is teh best pre-paid phone on the market. And i only had to pay $186.00 for it 2 months ago cause i work at Best Buy!

I just picked up a Slider Remix to replace my aging Rave. Does anyone know if it is possible to send graphic files (for wallpaper, contacts, or even screensavers) to the Remix via BlueTooth? If so, what format must they be in? I see that the screen res is 176 x 220 and I have Photoshop CS2, so I can output in practically any format.

Also, I saw some discussion here about renaming the mp3 files to get them to work as ringtones. Can I send renamed MP3 files with BlueTooth? I am trying to avoid paying for the overpriced cable.

Also, I saw the links to the software, but they have all expired. Anyone have a new link?

Thanks!

Posted by: nem108

Did you pick up your remix from the cricket website or did you buy it in one of the stores? I went to the local dealer to pick one up and they said that they wont have them till the 30th.

Posted by: devochka

I got it at the new CriKet store on 84th and Washington in Thornton, in person. The clerk said that they had just gotten them in that day (yesterday).

Grrr...utah is so behind. i was told they wouldnt be getting them till about the 30th by the store manager

Hmph. I downloaded the Kyocera Desktop version 2.4 and it doesn't recognize my phone. Actually, it _does_ recognize the phone, but it says that the software doesn't support this model and to contact support for updates. Anybody have a later version?

PS: I connected to the phone with BlueTooth, so you don't need the USB cable any more! Just set the BlueTooth adapter to use a COM port, just like you would with the USB cable. Sweet.

I got mine (finally) from cricket last month on the 25th and LOVE IT! Battery life is better than my koi and I love the paint job and buttons. Im really impressed with the volume of the ringtones and the clarity of the camera also

The camera is about the same as the one on the VX8100. Its a shame Verizon hasnt come out with it yet. Thats a pretty sweet phone

Posted by: UVAdrian

Is Verizon going to come out with the Slider Remix? Any rumors/thoughts?

Posted by: berry_lthird

Anyone have the new Slider and a KX2/KOI or SOHO? I am curios as to how the phone desktop tools differ....

I wish they would, I would take this over the razr any day.

Posted by: linkwest

A response from Verizon Wireless E-Mail support. I asked about future availability of the KX5 (Slider Remix):

Quote:
Currently, Verizon Wireless does not offer the Remix. I am unable to provide information regarding which equipment is being considered or approximate release dates, as this may raise expectations that may not be met.

If you want to look at the facts....
1. Verizon has very close relations w. Kyocera
2. Verizon always wants the most flashy phones
3. it offers Bluetooth which Verizon is desperate for more of
4. Holidays are almost here - if it is near release, it will likely be out any day now
5. In the email, the word "currently" was used. This offers some hope.

Posted by: moncreations

Hi everyone. Just out of curiousity how much did ya'll get the silder remix for? I hear ALLTEL is supposed to be releasing it Dec 9th-but that's just rumour so far. How does everyone like the remix? We have the original slider and are really happy with it.

Posted by: rasauq

verizon changed their minds
they arent getting the remix now, is what i heard.
so if you want it on them you'll have to get it elsewhere and somehow get them to activate it

Posted by: GTcruiser33

I got the remix a couple days before halloween, and it is a sweet phone.

Posted by: moncreations

Was the file you downloaded for Desktop phone tools setup.rar? I cannot get mine to install.

The files I found here on the forums are "Kyocera Phone Desktop" and "Kyocera Wireless Phone Support Toolkit." The software needed for the Remix is called "Kyocera Mobile PhoneTools" and nobody seems to have it.

Posted by: linkwest

The KX5 (Slider REMIX) supports only the mobile phone tools, which are not available fore download. You have to go and buy the CD for Mobile PhoneTools from the Kyocera accessory store (store.kyocera-wireless.com). I think that it is too large to download otherwise you would find it out there somewhere.

I don't care how big it is, I have cable. I have free web space with no bandwidth limit. I also have a bittorrent client. A search for it as a torrent was fruitless.

i picked a KX5 up today on Alltel, giving up the stupid RAZR. It came with a wired headset, charger, USB, holster, and a 16MB Transflash card with a Transflash adapter... WOW. So far i'm happy, except for the middle "OK"/media button and the trim piece surrounding it. Is anyone else's extremely wobbly and FEELS like it might come out (even though it probably won't)? Just making sure i don't have a defect of some sort. Also, does the phone not charge when hooked up to USB??? I love the LED feature which, i guess, flashes only green? Or does it use other colors I'm not aware of???

Mine flashes red when charging and green when it is fully charged. That OK button is pretty darn wobbly..heck the whole phone seems pretty frail, hope I never drop it on the ground.

Did you look under your modems and see the phone? Also I had a moto before this phone and had to delete it under the modems tree.

One other thing, make sure your drivers for the phone are installed, I think I had to use explorer on the install disk to find the modem driver for this phone and install it manually.

The LED also is red when you have missed calls or messages waiting.

Okay...just bought my Slider Remix this weekend from Cricket.

Here is my take on it so far:

PROS:
--LOUD!: Almost as loud as a Boost phone. MUCH louder than my Koi (which was one of my biggest complaints)
--Gorgeous display: Nice, high-res display with bright, clear colors
--Solid Antenna
--TransFlash slot: Got me a 512MB chip from Best Buy for about $70

CONS:
--Crippled Bluetooth functionality: WTF Kyocera? The only thing the BT seems to be good for so far is for use with a cordless headset--THIS IS ENTIRELY INEXCUSABLE! I can neither receive or push files such as vCards or MP3's to the phone? What gives? Bad thinking/planning on Kyocera's part. I hope there is a way to hack the phone to enable these features....In a word: puh-thetic
--No lens cover for camera: Annoying. I can see now that the lens will get dirty pretty quickly
--NO TETRIS? Bloody infidel! But to my experience, most phones are lacking in the games department. Obviously, the carriers want you to purchase and d/l premium content for your phone. *sigh* Alas.
--Seems too frail: I agree with Turbopeach on this one--I hope I don't drop this baby any time soon

Other than that, this has got to be the best Kyocera phone I have ever experienced, and the best phone Cricket has offered yet.

I am really miffed about the serious lack of Bluetooth functionality. This is a pity an a shame.

The fact that I cannot directly interface my phone with my PC to do thinks like address book sync really makes the BT functionality rather pointless, save for car/hands free. Meh.

A few interesting things to note:

--Virgin Mobile has a version of this phone called the Slider Sonic, which sports a Virgin Mobile branded joypad peripheral. You can buy the Virgin version of the phone and the joypad from Best Buy. It beats ordering it off the Internet. I tried it, and the joypad works for my Slider Remix. It basically emulates key presses on the key pad. But you cannot use it for the built-in Brick Attack game. An interesting note about the joypad peripheral, however: It has a bona-fide mini-USB interface between the phone and they joypad's base! Which makes me wonder: Can you use said USB interface to plug the phone into a PC? Granted, the adapter cable is only a few mere inches long at best.

Unfortunately, I returned the joypad before I could test this theory. Can anyone else confirm that it works? If so, that would mean you could forego purchasing the dedicated, venerable data cable, so long as you could find a place to d/l drivers and such!

The Virgin joypad for the Slider Sonic retails for about $30 bucks.

--Here is a cool trick to do with your Remix if you purchased the Stereo Headset accessory: Since neither my car nor car stereo are BT enabled, I went ahead purchased one of those audio adapters that play the source sound through any FM radio. I simply plugged the adapter into the stereo headphone adapter for my Remix and, voila! Instant hands-free calling through my car's stereo along with MP3 music to boot!

I can't wait to hack the ever-loving sh*t out of this phone!

Posted by: GTcruiser33

i dont know what carriers you people have where you have to buy the cable and the software seperately, mine came in the box, no need to buy anything extra as for as the MPT goes. LED has been explained. I dont think the OK button and the surrounding trim feel like their going to fall off, while the phone does seem a little fragile, ive dropped mine a couple times with no ill affects, though i do have insurance on it ever since i lost a phone last year. Some of you are saying how it wont connect to your PC, mine said the same thing, that there was an error in synching with the phone or whatever, but everything still transfered over. I typed in all my contacts on my computer and transfered them even when it said it couldnt connect, it still worked. It is super loud, which is really nice. I dont have any complaints really, except for the lack of tetris that was previously mentioned. Anyways i would recomend this phone for sure.

I'm looking at getting this phone. Does this phone support Mac OS X out of the box, or will i have to struggle to get it to work?

Is there a way to reset this thing... played around in the service programmer and now it wont turn on. It just flashes the kyocera logo on and off over and over again...

I am using Virtual PC 7 (Windows 98SE) with Mac OS X and the built-in Bluetooth on my PowerBook G4. Map the Bluetooth to a COM port in Virtual PC and you don't need to drop any cash on the way overpriced cable. You can get the software for the phone here:

the only con i have is the fact there is no games. the bluetooth on my phone works like a usb cable. heck, i connect to my phone using BT which would connect to my ISP. your provider probably disabled those features.

First thing I did getting it home was drop it on a concrete floor. Twice.

It's pretty solid, despite looking like it's made of glass. I'm the goof master when it comes to phone dropping.

yesterday i went and had to have my slider remix replaced because it wouldnt hold a charge. this is the 5th time ive had the phone replaced. ive had nothing but problems with it since i got it. and ive been really upset that i spent almost 450 dollars on a phone that sucks. however, yesterday, they gave me the new version with bluetooth. they didnt give me the box it comes in or anything else. JUST the phone.
now, when i use the USB cord they gave me with the last set of phones it brings the phone up as a drive. and when i try and use the mobile phone tools it wont recognize the phone at all. and the phone says "Phone is in file transfer mode. to quit use eject hardware option on the pc and press the end on the phone." now maybe im stupid but, i dont have a "eject hardware option" on my PC. and when i press the end button it turns off. am i the only person having these problems? it doesnt bother me THAT much because im able to move larger ring tones to the phone, which is a plus. but it bothers me that the phone has to be turned off and back on when i want to move files.

yes... it does suck that the phone has to be turned off and on.... however, its not that big of a deal if u ask me because its a couple of seconds to get it to switch.... ya dig... and the eject hardware optoin... at the bottom right of your computer you should be able to find something that when u right click it says "safely remove hardware" hit that, find whice on the phone is, and stop it.... then hit end... thats the "correct" way to do it, but it dont really matter......and mine is the new model as well... never had a prollem wit it

there is a 'eject hardware' button on your pc. it is in the system try with a green arrow. click on it and then on the device you want to remove click on it again and click 'stop'. that will remove your hardware.

also, when transfering in usb or bt, the cell phone restarts after transfer of files. with USB, the phone goes into standby then restarts. in BT mode, the phones recieves the files then restarts. regardless in any mode, no call can get through till you stop or finish transferring files and restart.

the cell phone cannot multitask.

You can also transfer files, using your micro sandisk. So, you dont need to turn on/off your phone if you have the adapter which came with the card.
