Sharp 903SH/SX833 can have .MP3 format ringtones in phone's 8MB ONLY?!?!
I read quite a few reviews and 903SH/SX833 users from www.sogi.com.tw
Chinese forum(one of the biggest from Taiwant) that you CAN use MP3 format ringtones ONLY in Phone's internal member of 8MB. They tested if it's under 1MB it's settable for ringtone. Only in phone's internal member of 8MB.
Unfortunately I don't have a 903SH or a SH833 to test, so will someone kindly test to see if we can actually set *.mp3* as ringtones directly without
changing the format to AAC....otherwise...I'd say this phone is a piece of XXXX in my opinion. After month of waiting and this is what I get for the most expensive and the most top of the line cell phoen from SHARP??!

I believe I'm among all of the rest curious potential buyers for this phone so I hope someone can clearfy this

Thanks very much for reading.

The Euro version can do it only in handset memory as can the HK version (I think), while the JP version can't do it at all.

I agree, it's annoying when Sharp put so little internal memory in the phone, then restrict it like this. Very illogical.

Wow that's such a great news AL. Do you have a UK or HK version 903SH in your hand by the way? Have you actually tested the .MP3 format in phone's internal 8MB memory for ringtone setting? Any restrictions or errors while setting the .MP3 format file in phone's internal memory for incoming ringtones?

Please let me know asap to keep my hope up as I'm about to get one soon!

Thanks again.

No I haven't actually tested it and don't have one myself. I'm going off what other people have reported while testing their phones on these and other forums. I'm hoping to get one myself next month, when they're officially released by Vodafone in Australia. Will be able to test it for you then.

What the people say on sogi.com.tw about the restrictions is generally correct. There is a size restriction on MP3s for use as ringtones, and one megabyte would probably be correct.

Thanks once again for your valuable quick reply.
Another courious thought just came to my mind about the Sharp 903SH. I'm wondering if it's possible to buy an unlocked UK version 903SH and reflash its firmware to the HK version of the 903SH, the SX833 so I could get the tranditional chinese support in a BLACK 903SH instead of the RED SX833.

Like you said, both UK and HK version of the 903SH are capable to set .MP3 format directly as their ringtones, but only within phone's internal memory and with restriction size of about 1mb from the review we both have read from forums to forums around the globe.

I have a sharp SX833 (HK version unlocked ) and it doesn't allow me to use .mp3 files as ringtones!! i've transferred it to the internal memory, it's less than 300kb and it still doesn't work...keeps saying " illegal file " SH*T! i've been trying to use mp3 files as ringtones since 2wks ago and am not succeeding at all....I feel like throwing this piece of red crap against the wall! *seriously*

if anyone can help...what am I doing wrong??? I know it's mp3, it is less than 300kb and I chose the internal memory....why illegal file?? ugh!!!! *pulls hair*

It should be possible to flash the 903SH with the SX833's firmware, but I don't know of any person who's offering the service yet. People from Hong Kong should be able to help with that one...

Shom that's a bit of a surprise that you can't get them to work. Anybody else with a SX833 able to get them to work? If it's saying illegal file, it's possible that it wasn't changed from the SX813 firmware and still restricted. Would be a shame if that was the case...

My information on the .MP3 format ringtone in the phone's internal memory was tested by a Sharp 903SH user who uses the *UK* version of the Sharp 903SH. It's all matter of what software you've in your Sharp 903SH. The hardware certainly does supports .mp3 as ringtones. It's just Sharp and Vodaphone restricts it from using .MP3 directly. I believe it's on the business and marketing point of view of not allowing user to use .mp3 freely. You'd have to download from their website...and obviously the mp3 sponsor pays them...etc...ppl who study marketing, business should know why ONLY Sharp is doing this. We're living in the world where everyone uses MP3s...

Again, I hoping someone who has the *UK* version of the Sharp 903SH Black to test .MP3 format ringtone in their phone's internal memory to see if those review and the notes the person made on www.sogi.com.tw was right.

Thanks for reading.

Yeah in this case it comes down to how the network operator wants to restrict the phone's functions. In Japan ALL phones sold there are restricted from playing MP3s. It's considered an evil format or something, and no network operator wants their phones supporting it without some form of DRM encryption (which usually is the SD Audio format). In Vodafone Japan's case, they have always restricted MP3 from their phones, and just now with the 703SH and 903SH they have allowed the use of non-DRM AAC files to be used in the music player (still not as ringtones though).

In the rest of the world Vodafone Group controls what handsets become live! phones, and until recently they've been restricting MP3s from being used as ringtones only (they haven't minded using them in music players). It looks like they're getting the message now though and allowing live! phones to use them as ringtones. Hopefully all their future live! phones will support MP3s as ringtones in the future.

As for SmarTone-Vodafone of Hong Kong I don't know their policy, but they may come to resemble Vodafone's policy over time. I know with the SX813 though the music player could play MP3s, but they couldn't be set as ringtones. It was the same with the GX32 as well.

It's said that you have to download via wap if you want to set MP3 files as ringtones. I've just got a unlocked JP one, can't test for you.

You've got an unlocked Japanese phone? (!)

Posted by: hrunting

Unlocked Japanese?! Since when

Posted by: mauvanilla

What? What? ... Did I hear an UNLOCKED JAP one???

Where? When? How? Who?

Please share this precious information with us!!! and if you have pics as well this would be cool!

Posted by: kms-lai

Somehow some shops has the 903sh jap version, and claim's it to be unlocked. but at a price HKD 6980.

from info that i have gathered, you expect unlocked japanese version 903sh to circulate in hk, around less that two weeks.

actually the info about unlocked jap 903 has been leaked about two weeks ago, but it wasn't time to release any info yet, i've told only three people on this forum about it.

Posted by: pibrahim

So mass unlocking for those of us with the 903SH is almost upon us.... or rather, it's only the option of being able to buy new unlocked 903's that'll be available soon? i.e. - are they releasing the info on how they're unlocking them?

Posted by: pibrahim

Oh, kms-lai, one other thing - has the unlocked version had the reprovisioning issue sorted too...?

Posted by: kms-lai

when mass unlocking is available, shops will sell the unlocked phone, and also will be able to unlock phones for people who already has a locked version, info is that the phone has been unlocked a while ago, they are just waiting for the sx833 firmware, if the phone has the sx833 f/w, there will be no reprovision issue, unless the phone is just unlocked with no f/w upgrade.

Posted by: pibrahim

Problem with the SX833 firmware is the ugly menu/lack of themes though... so I take it the choice is unlocked 903SH with reprovisioning, or unlocked 903SH with SX833 firmware?

No middle option of unlocked 903SH without reprovisioning, but still using the Japanese firmware then...?

Posted by: Timsta

we'll have to stay tuned to the news. but unlcoking still isn't readily available if it is available yet... for the jap ones anyways.. patiently waiting.

i think it would be likt he 902sh.. where ppl would flash to the 903sh / sx833's firmware instead.. ugly menu's and lack of themes is nothing new... so i guess it doesn't matter much to me.

Posted by: junz

Sorry my bad, mine is locked not unlocked. I've been thinking this unlocking thing too much these days.

Posted by: Synncere

I'm thinking of getting the SX833 and if I get it I hope I won't have any issues using MP3's as ringers or playing music off the memory card. W/ the 902SH there was so much hassle in making the ringtones I wanted into .mmf and then the whole drm thing to play music of the memory card.

Posted by: kms-lai

the 903sh has the same issues as the 902sh regarding ringtones and playback either with the euro, hk or jap version phones, but I think someone has mention about the support of aac audio format within the forum, well I have'nt tested it out yet.

Posted by: AL9999

The 903 Euro version can play MP3 ringtones as long as they're under a certain size. Someone has mentioned 1MB here. The other two versions (JP and HK) only play SMAF files for ringtones.

Posted by: wai_lai416

i was planning on getting a locked 903 and hold on to it for a while... but after all the reviews back to sony ericsson i go ---

I guess it is not as good as the good old Nokia 6230i then...
