basic moto v635 modding questions

ive been studying the threads here and on other boards for a few days now and i think i just confused myself even more. ive never modded/flashed/etc a phone before, so consider me a total n00b. there's just so much info on here in so many diff threads...
i just bought a data cable, and it didn't come with any software. i DL'ed p2kMan, p2kTools, and moto phone tools. none of these programs can connect to my phone. what am i missing? is there a driver or something else that i need to DL first? if so, where do i find it?
all i want to do is get AIM on my phone, and MAYBE flash (flex?) from 24R to something better (if i get the hang of this stuff somewhere down the line). i'd also like to transfer mp3s and pics from my comp to my phone. but first and foremost, i'd like to CONNECT it to my comp. help.. please?
