click there and click on updates or just go down... a photo for key guard and javscript...man.. i cant wait

Posted by: hatr3d

I wonder how long we will have to wait for that? That can't come soon enough!!!

Posted by: culppimp

awsome..i get my sidekick saturday and it hasnt been used in a month...how will i get the update if its already been sent out

Posted by: mpapple10

users at www.hiptop.com report that the OTA has started to roll out. Its only one user though but he has email proof that it is installed and running

Posted by: Chinasaur

FINALLY!!!!! There is some good functionality coming... enough to get us to 2003 or 2004 at the very least!!!

The "store phone book on SIM card" feature is always welcome..

Now here's hoping the OTA doesn't cause major glitches across the Globe ...

And actually..yes..I DO test software for a living..so I know what CAN happen

Posted by: StaceLuvaLuva

Was in the T-Mo store today and the re was talking to another rep and i over heard this. According to him everything should be done by the end of the month.

Just in time for the new special edition SK2 to come out, and take advantage of the OTA.

Posted by: SilverPenny

Head over to Hiptop.com/forums and check out the screen shots of the new OTA, boy are they a BEAUTY.

And, yes, only ONE person has received the OTA, and haven't heard about it anywhere else.

Posted by: lilvanmuzz

danger.please dish out those updates faster....... i want mine badly...im gunna die waiting..

Posted by: Scott

Yes, I believe that copying text from a web page will work in the new update.

Tmo devices are currently running OS 2.0 - the US English version of the OS.

Fido devices are running OS 2.1 - the multi-locale version of OS 2.0 (supporting French for Canada).

Tmo devices are just now getting an upgrade to OS 2.3 - a US English-only version.

From that, one would presume that international devices like Fido and Tmo Germany and so on could expect an international version of 2.3 sometime in the near future.

IIRC the rollout of 2.1 was a couple of months after 2.0 hit the streets.

Posted by: theoneplaya139

this is so great, now i can use the gameday feature on mlb.com to keep me updated with the yankees score. yeah. go yanks!

Posted by: Scott

Interesting enough it also shows WAP browsing again although it says carrier dependant... It would be sweet if it came to Fido someday.

Posted by: lbronx3

i cant wait for the update.. has anyone received it here? Every Update is like having a new phone.. i cant wait to explore its capabilities

Posted by: mpapple10

i dont think anyone here has it, but now 2 people over at hiptop.com have it. Nothing was offically announced, but since someone else has it now maybe danger and tmo are sending it out

Posted by: lbronx3

i have a question... u think people with pre-paid tmobile sidekick 2 will receive the update also?

Posted by: terryjohnson16

Yes, they will.

Posted by: mpapple10

hiptop forums have reported a new user recieving the OTA. Is tmobile sending it out now?

Posted by: terryjohnson16

Some people, I think only 2 have received the OTA. I think they put it on hold though.

Posted by: lbronx3

i wish i didnt know about the OTA cuz now i seem myself looking at my sidekick more often wondering if i have the prompt to update the phone

Posted by: negative

Below are a few of the changes on with the new update... I believe it was initially sent out to 1000 people, overall it usually takes about 2-3 motnths for everyone to get the update (thats how lon g it took the last time).... factors depend on coverage of course as well as how much time you spend on voice calls on the device... I beleive the update being sent out has been delayed anyways at least for another few days...

Lots of improvements to AIM

Web Browser

Client-side JavaScript support.
Improved load time and layout.
“Find” function on Web pages.
JavaScript on/off setting.
Text is now downloaded before images.
When on History screen, there is a menu item to “clear history”.
Select “All” Web page contents to paste in another application.
Improved support for color, fonts, borders, and background colors.
For Web pages that are too large to be displayed on the device, the user will see an “out of
memory” dialog box after the page stops loading.
Pop-ups that are not the result of a user selection are ignored.

Camera

Slideshow feature.
Rotate image.
D-pad navigates the gallery in four directions.
Different views: Full Screen, Thumbnails, List, Zoom In, Zoom Out, Actual Size

Email

Setting to download message headers only.
Multiple selection of messages in Browse Email screen.
Ability to create a new folder when setting up a new account.
Actionable inline links for URLs, email addresses, phone numbers
Menu + Cancel shortcut discards messages.

wow. go to http://www.hiptop.com/forums/viewto...der=asc&start=0

Posted by: mpapple10

Tmobile has confirmed with me that the ota is now being delayed and there is no date yet for when it will begin to send out.

Posted by: terryjohnson16

I read that already in the hiptop.com forum, but thanks for filling everyone in.

Posted by: lbronx3

anyone has any news on the OTA? im guessing it must be released by October since the new T-Mobile Black Sidekick II named Mr. Cartoon its gonna include Javascript. so its gonna have the new OTA. You wouldnt think that they would release this new phone with the new javascript without us people with the regular Sidekick II having it?

Posted by: terryjohnson16

I think they should have released a SK3 instead to make use of the $399.99 new activation price. Something tells me that if a SK3 does come out, it won't be until Spring or summer of 2006.

Posted by: culppimp

i got my sidekick friday night it poped up with the promt to instal an OTA i was like dang i must be lucky or sumthin....come to find out it was 2.03 or something like that....so mow im paitiently waiting all the new features got me that hype

Posted by: lbronx3

u received the latest update? we still using ver. 2.0

Posted by: djayrage

Everyone should be on 2.03, 2.3 is the new OS that Danger is sending out...

Posted by: SouthStar019

for some reason i am stil on v2.0 and i got mine like 3 months ago.

Posted by: djayrage

Call tech support and they can send the 2.03 update (please double check if you don't have that, as everyone got that, unless you denied the update). They can send OTA updates to specific IMEI's

Posted by: theoneplaya139

when will the update hit nyc>?

Posted by: djayrage

Quote:

Its completely random. You can get it in 5 minutes, or in 5 weeks, and it doesn't matter which market or location you are in.

Posted by: lbronx3

has the update still been delayed? any word on wen it will be sent out again? im patiently waiting.

Posted by: mpapple10

It has not yet gone out. The OTA server was running a stress test to see how many it could send out at once, and then it was stopped for an unknown reason. There is no time frame to when the OTA will begin to send out again.

Posted by: lbronx3

o0o... but i think that it will be released by the end of September.. cuz without this update they cant sell the Mr. Cartoon Sidekick II since they already annouced that it would have it. And people have received the OTA on this Forum as well as on Hiptop.com im guessing there is alot of other people that received it and we dont know about it. so i got my hopes up.

Posted by: mpapple10

users on hiptop forums reporting the the OTA has started to go out again as of Sept 20 after a 5 day delay. No further report of any users recieving the update, but it is supposed to be sending out slowly

Posted by: lbronx3

thats good news.. im happy to hear there.. have anybody noticed the AIM on the Sidekick II working slowly the past two days? i have a couple of friends with Sidekick II.. and wen we send each other IMs while being in the same room it takes longer than usual to receive the the IMs u think this has to do with the UPDATE?

Posted by: lbronx3

this is wat was posted on the hiptop forums.. dont know if its accurate.. but only time will tell. it was originally posted by FlyBabyBoy on Hiptop.com

T-Mobile OTA TIMELINE
Sept 14, 2005 (my bday) - OTA 2.3 released and was already given to a couple of people (approximately over 150)

Sept 15, 2005 - OTA 2.3 postponed to later date (subjecting to further adjustments)

NOTE: it was postponed for 5 days

Sept 20, 2005 - OTA 2.3 resumed after undergoing more tests and adjustments

It was never cancelled and everything is rolling out as it should be.

Posted by: theoneplaya139

thats good news, hopefully it can come to nyc first.hehe

Same here.

The T-Mobile website only mentions release 2.0 when I log in.

I'll call CS tomorrow and let you know what I find out.

Posted by: bryanc

You kno wats funny, were gonna get this update and then like 3weeks down the line... were gonna want another update. lol --

Posted by: lbronx3

i will be alright with this UPDATE for a while.. im just anxious to see how AIM is gonna look and work.

Posted by: lbronx3

Does anyone know anyone that has received the update since Sunday? wondering if the OTA are being sent out or not.. Still Wondering....

Posted by: h16h

Um okay. I'm a newbie and I need help.

I got my sidekick on the 14th [sidekick II]... I checked my inbox just now and it says Thank you for installing the release 2.0.3 over the air update! Blah blah, when I checked the new features about buddy icons and key guard photo... I follow the directions and these new features are nowhere to be seen. Me is very confused, any help?

The new update is 2.3, not 2.0.3. You still have the old version. Keep waiting.

Thank you. <3

Im in Vancouver and I am dying for Javascript. I was about to return my hiptop2 because it didnt support it. Now, I wonder if I drive to an area where I pick up a T Mobile signal will I recieve the update? Or does it HAVE to come from Fido? Any techs out there who could answer this? I can easily find T Mobile coverage in a couple spots up here, and if the update just seeks out devices and sends the ota. then why wouldnt it work? Except I'd have to wait for it....email me................

jpcomtelvan@fidohiptop.ca

Posted by: MYcityfidoHAHA!

I guess its a tradeoff. Here in Canada we can get any ringtone we want by emailing it to ourselves and click on "save as ringtone" but in the U.S. T Mobile has disabled that feature. *evil carriers*

BUT.......we have to wait longer for updates damnit!!!!!!!

sorry yo, this won't work... it's done based on carrier.. even though you'd be roaming, you're not gonna get the udpate.

Lack of javascript was 75% of the reason I stopped using a sidekick... if this update comes out (and ESPECIALLY if T-Mobile will allow wap browsing), I'll be all over getting myself another one.

Posted by: rebirth534

That is what alot of sidekick users are thinking. Tmobile is having network issues with the data system. That is possibly why it is taking longer to send out the ota.

Umm I don't think so. Tmobile is still pilot testing their new OTA with just a few users. It has been released to around 1000 users I believe (which finished on sept. 23) and is now being evaluated again. If all goes well it should be released very shortly.

And those images are real.

And don't call T-mobile crying about where your OTA is. You will get it eventually but you have to wait like everyone else. You're not special.

Posted by: djayrage

We've waited over a year for this update, I think we can wait a few more weeks...

Posted by: IHZT15

^^ yea im wondering the same thing......

Posted by: mpapple10

danger has acknowledged about 1000 users have recieved the update and that it will start going to all sidekick's soon. The amount of time it will take depends on who your carrier is and results of the stability of the os.

Posted by: djbigz

Is it possible on the sidekick 2, or will it be possible with the new update??

Posted by: djayrage

Quote:

Streaming audio/video wouldn't be posible. That would require a hardware upgrade as opposed to the OS update we should be receiving soon.
Also I think the only carrier that is getting the update is TMobile users. All Fido, Suncom, etc... users have to wait even longer.

Precaite that rage, how cool would that have been huh?? Atleast I will be able to check my gmail & bellsouth email accounts now!

Posted by: djayrage

The ability to stream audio is one of the reason why I will be picking up the HTC Wizard once it finally drops! Plus with bluetooth I should be able to connect it to my laptop and transmit live from any location with cell phone coverage!
Anyway, back to the original subject...
I want my damm update already LOL...

Danger may be sending it out, but it still has not been offically released.

this was a post on Hiptop.com can anyone verify this information? i can't since mines is Pre-paid.. can any sidekick user login to their accout and verify this information?

Posted: Tue Sep 27, 2005 3:07 pm Post subject: OTA Update

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I was looking at my bill on T-mobile.com it said that all sidekick users will receive the updates January 2006. (I think the end of January) but thats what it says.

Posted by: boyd087

mine still says 2.0 from january 2005... sorry but they haven't officially released it yet...

hiptop forums have had a lot of users giving out BS info. One said his bill already said they were releasing it in october or something... if it shows up for one person it will show up for every user.

Posted by: broox

yeah i just logged into my account and it is only giving info on the last release (Jan 05). it seems like everyone has 'heard of' someone who has gotten the update but no one really has it or has seen it.

i hope, i hope it comes down, and comes down soon.

Posted by: lbronx3

yea i figured.. and i contacted Danger and they confirm the OTA 2.3 is being tested and have been sent to a about 1000 users..but they wount indicate wen it will be released or any ofther info..

Posted by: rebirth534

whats da latest news with this im gettin mad lool

Posted by: mpapple10

latest news is everyone is still waiting for danger and tmobile to announce that the update is rolling.

Posted by: boyd087

I'm thinking.... October 1st. NOTE: THIS IS NOT A FACT IT'S A GUESS
(Don't come crying to me when it's October 2nd and the OTA hasn't started rolling)

It will be here before febuary. The "beta test" of the OTA is already in progress and is about to be finished. Look for the update to be rolling no later than the end of october.

What about the Special Edition Sidekick 2? and SK3 if that ever comes?

Posted by: lbronx3

I got it confirmed! I Spoke to a Tmobile rep about my friend's SKII .. It has radio problem.. And we asking for warranty.. So he asked us if we had v2.3 on the OS and we of course said no.. But then I asked him.. "Around wat time will the new update be released and to how many people?" his answer is that it has already been rolling out.. And that its being distributed at random to 4000 people a day. ... So look out..your SKII could be next.

Posted by: KrAzE00YoUnG

Uhh 4,000 people a day? that's so much. Anybody know approximately how many sidekick users there are total?

Posted by: boyd087

4000 people a day? that is a lot and your info is speculated... There is still no official word and reps are notorious for false info

Posted by: lbronx3

Sure.. So let put it to the test.. Cuz I spoke to a Danger Technical Support Represenative. Why don't u guys call T-Mobile Tech Support for the Sidekick II and see wat they tell you..

Posted by: Spcman03

any new updates? got kinda quiet in here

Posted by: phaserx

I called tmobile today and the rep told me he received a memo regarding the 2.3 OTA a few days ago.. He said that it has been rolled out to roughly 6,000 people total as a pilot launch to evaulate the product before they launch it across the country. He had no ETA to give me but mentioned the memo said an e-mail will be sent out when the OTA is available.

Posted by: mahool

if you call T-mobile Tech support will they send you an update for 2.3, or would you have to wait for it to hit your phone by random

I would think that the Sidekick 3 should be released next year, since the Sidekick 2 is kinda getting boring and old now. It has been a year already since it was released. If they wait too long to release a new Sidekick model, then they might lose customers.

Posted by: jgeorge

T-Mobile reps have no way of forcing the new OS to your device. That's *all* handled by the Danger backend that T-Mo CSRs have *less* than no access to.

t-mobile dude said they randomly send it to 5000 people a day. deammm is every one who didnt get they update keep stairing at their phone waiting for that update? hah

Posted by: FlugPoP

I wonder why 'MY T-Mobile" hasn't changed the thing that say January OTA?

Posted by: rebirth534

i know i been staring at my screen ha lol

Posted by: workaholic

its supposed to go on for about 3 weeks and i think we're 1 week into it....so some might have to wait 2 more weeks...sorry

Posted by: sithfish2

The phone runs about the same speed. Web browsing isn't any slower, but if you have javascript enabled it takes a little longer. The icons for aim are ok I suppose. Being able to aim screen names to the address book is a nice addition as well. I really like the active links in my e-mail. You can just click on them instead of scrolling down to the bottom of the message and searching for the right one.

If it really stopped the camera from freezing I'd be seriously psyched.

When they say the OTA goes out *randomly* believe it.

Though I think I'd hate to pay roaming charges to download an OTA...

Not as far as I know. The first guy to post on ht.com that got the OTA was actually roaming on Suncom at the time he got it (which spawned no end of "Suncom getting the OTA" threads that were all just plain wrong).

Wow, didn't even know that the sidekick is supported all the way over there.

Knowing Iraq, he probably JUST got the OTA 1.1! w00t! It's great not having Saddam in charge, huh!

It is metered through danger so that the update system does not get overloaded. This system send out the updates at random. Calling tmobile will do nothing.

Posted by: djayrage

I received my update a couple of hours ago. So far I am really impressed....

Posted by: YOURDAD

does it just update automatically?!

Posted by: Kabuk1

This whole "random" crap is grade-A BS. They should deliver it to the senior users first, the people who've had the SKII the longest. It's unfair that some kid who got his a week ago gets the update but someone like me- who bought the stupid thing the day it was released- is still waiting.

I think I might call Danger & give them a piece of my mind, this is really starting to piss me off.

Before flaming Danger or anyone about this, consider what you're asking. Not that I'm disagreeing with what you *want*, I'd just like to ask you to consider how this might (or might not) be *done*.

The OTA server is *completely* IMEI based. The OTA server doesn't know *anything* about your device except for 4 pieces of information: IMEI, hiptop OS version, radio firmware version, and the last time that your device checked in with the OTA server. Doesn't know who you are, doesn't know where you are, doesn't know anything about you.

So you're a long time SK user. How should the servers know that about you?

1) Keep your purchase/IMEI history? That's a lot of work, database-wise, to make sure that you as a long-time user get your upgrade first. Feasible? Sure. Practical? Hardly.

2) Since devices are manufactured over time with reasonably-sequential IMEI numbers issued, send the OTA to the oldest online IMEIs first, guaranteeing that the old-heads get their OTA ahead of everyone else? Nice idea, looks good on paper, but doesn't take into account device replacements. If we all kept the original device we bought there might be some merit to this, but most ALL of us have had a device replacement or two somewhere along the line, and guess what, that process means that some old-heads are going to find up with VERY new IMEI devices, and that means that some newer users are going to get older IMEIs in refurb devices as replacements.

So, in order to really hold some weight when complaining that you deserve your OTA first, I'd really love to hear if you had some ideas on how this might be done.

Assigning the upgrades to random recently-checked-in IMEIs in the database serves several purposes:

a) It presumes a reasonably random rollout of the OS across the carrier network, so that one area or city doesn't get KILLED in bandwidth while the OS is pushed out;

b) It presumes that the active IMEIs in the database are active users and doesn't spend time trying to flag older offline devices as eligible for the OTA if they're not in use, broken, going through the refurb process, or sitting powered off in a drawer somewhere;

c) It presumes that the process is geniunely "fair" and doesn't play favorites ("Why should user X get the OTA before me? I'm older, longer-time user, prettier, richer, or more fly than him/her!") because the only basis for the OTA selection is a random selection of a non-user identifying bit iof information.

I agree with you that long time users should get first whack at an upgrade, if for no other reason than the longer time users would be better able and more willing to provide feedback as part of the "pioneer" rollout process. but there's no way I know of to be able to do this with the system as it's currently designed, and I can't see the system being redesigned (especially with any added level of complexity) considering that the process is only done once a year, twice at the most.

Joe

Posted by: SouthStar019

man up there wrote an essay. haha nicely done.

Posted by: scuzy

random is fine it's not about being fair. They're all customers you can't discriminate customers otherwise all hell will break loose. Perks maybe but upgrade i don't think so.

It is not only EASY to do..it is trivial to put out the update based on activation date. And there are numerous reasons WHY T-Mobile SHOULD do this. I work in Software test as my day job and we push out updates to our users on a quarterly basis. We can do it anyway we want. Geography, logon time, SW version, business unit, etc.

1. Activation date is as random as IMEI. If it's not..any clusters would hardly rise above the statistical noise level given the numbers updated per week. T-Mob cuts danger a file with IMEI and activation date. Danger sorts and uses this table. Next.

2. Senior users have invested more in T-Mobile than junior users. Keeping them happy, and around, is beneficial to both T-Mob and Danger.

3. Senior users have more "stick time" on the device and are more likely to recognize a fault condition (bug) vs a newbie who's had the device 24 hours.

4. Engendering good will with a newbie is wasted effort vs keeping a multi-year subscriber happy.

5. Senior users are more likely (assumption here) to use the device longer, and in more complete ways than a newbie. Thus, these users are more apt to spot problems.

6. If an IMEI is not active, it moves on..which I'm sure is the way the system does now. Specious argument.

7. So the system is not designed that way? We mod our backend processes on a weekly basis. So can Danger. Non issue.

All in all, no reason why they can't other than they don't want to. Danger doesn't care about users because they dont DEAL with us on a daily basis. So they don't care. Which, as any user who has had a SKII for more than a few months, already konws by how Danger has maintained it's network this year.

I wrote this during the March outage (http://hiptop.com/forums/viewtopic....6246&highlight= ). It doesn't take a rocket scientist to find where Danger can improve it's practices. But it seems to take an act of God to have Danger IMPROVE it's practices.

Congrats! How do you like it? I'm really digging how much faster the web browser is, and in the few days I've had mine I haven't had one single browser time out so that's definitly cool.
Also evetything else seems to run smoother & faster as well.

You heard correctly....

Posted by: SouthStar019

Not only that i didnt get this update thing. but i cant even connect to the data network. just 2 of them dots show up. same thing with my friend. any one experiences this problem? what can cause this? and no one that i know with the SK2 got the update yet. they should double to uploads per day to like 10,000 or some thing hah.

Posted by: djayrage

That means your not connected to the network. Could be any number of reasons, give it some time and you should be back with a "G" soon enough.
(Sometimes I'm stuck with the "2 ball dance" for hours at a time)....

When i was getting my account activated the sales rep told the activation lady on the phone to make sure i get the available updates. All i know is that i got an update in under a week so perhaps calling tmo isnt 100% useless.... just a thought

No its not. Logically someone who has been with the same service for a long time is more likely to stay with it. Especially people within their refund period. And as most people are on contract these days, they will stay the same amount of time as anyone else would.

And "senior" users are more likely to complain that they deserve softwares thats are fully tested... Especially if an unforseen bug make them lose their precious data or the network...

Not even sure what you meant here.

Because even the most simple change can affect thousand of users. Especially network wise change.

As you repeated the same two arguments 3 times, and they are discutable... Their reason seems more valid than yours. And I say that without even knowing their reasons.

Just wait people. Its worth the wait, but its not the answer to all of life's problems...

Posted by: mpapple10

i hope things will start speeding up now that danger has posted at www.hiptop.com they are releasing an update for the T-Mobile sidekick with a lot of new features. No dates were mentioned in the article.

Posted by: Don Q

Hate to brag but when I looked at my sidekick it was ready to update. What a great present for my birthday! I only got this a month ago too.

Posted by: FlugPoP

OK I believe it now. I just got mine over night. So far I’m likening the new AIM.

Posted by: holdenmichael

I don't remember where, but I thought I had seen that the update would provide us with a WAP browser.

Will any of you that have received the update confirm or deny this?

I don't really know of many WAP sites, but I'd at least like to see if it will allow us to test the browser's speed at DSLReports.com.

Posted by: FlugPoP

I do NOT see it on mine. That would have been a nice feature.

Posted by: holdenmichael

I must have been dreaming or just thinking of another phone.

Thanks.

Some verisons of the hiptop do have a wap browser. T-Mobile does not include this feature.

i am still wating damm it lol

Posted by: mesallem

I got the UPDATE....I found a way to force an update to 2.3 and I've done it on 7 different sidekicks...and it works!

Posted by: rebirth534

yea n how is that ur lying

Posted by: philliboi

Turn your sk2 on and off and wait to see if the 7 goes crazy...if not,try again some ppl did it 24 times!!! I powered on and off four times and got my update!!!

Posted by: decuss

the 7?....what 7???

Posted by: mesallem

He's right...THe 7...there little icon that tells you your transfering data. I did it only once on each sidekick and it worked. It's just a matter of finding a slot on the danger servers. I got found out the trick from a friend that works for danger. He said that the Sidekick servers have a total of 150 slots to transfer updates at any given time. They will not transfer another update until one of those slots frees up...someone finishes downloading there update. Also the reason this trick works is because it causes your sidekick to do a system check with Danger services...most sidekicks do system checks at a pre programed time, once a day, but by "forcing" a system check you force it to check for updates and resync with the server. As he said some people tried 24 times to get it because they could not find a slot for the update. I on the other hand tried it only 1 on each sidekick and it worked...must be lucky I guess. Anyways, it does work...so try it.

Posted by: decuss

the 7...where is it..is that lil thing rigth next to the G? if so...it looks like its replenishing itself once in a while..but i thought it was because i was trying to get service..but yeah i'll try turning it off and on to get the update...i'll update yall tonight if it worked

Posted by: t610rulesss

would this trick work if you just keep turning the wireless option, in the jump menu, off and on?

Posted by: FlugPoP

I found a bug in the new aim. It won't let you go idle. I have the "allow users to to see when idle" on and it still doesn't work.

i believe i'm getting it now.. 11 min and i'm still recieving something.. however it didn't seem to work after 11 network on/off's but 8 power cycles, and i'm recieving it i believe

Posted by: scrapye

yessur!!! the trick worked i just kept powering off and on while i was browsing the internet and when i saw the '7' going crazy i left it alone and now i got 2.3
