8940 SD format issues

So I have had 4 8940's now! YEAH! This first was the best but I had extended network issues. The 2nd one didn't fix it and the verizon people couldn't get my phone book off... so i opted to keep the original with my numbers in it. Seems like they fix the network issue cause that never happens anymore.

Moving on, my antenna failed... so I got another warranty phone. I used backupassistant to get my numbers off! What a savior that is. So here's the issue I'm looking for help with:

My original phone worked great with the SD card. when I got this new phone 2 weeks ago it wouldn't format the card. It says format failed everytime I booted and tried to format or transfer the card to the new phone. I raised hell at the verizon store that I bought this phone to have an MP3 player and they sent me a 4th phone. It won't format the card either!!!!!!!! I put it in the original phone and it formats fine, puts the folders on it and works like a champ. So what happend? new firmware that won't recognize my SanDisk 512 card? I know the card it's self is fine. 2 bad SD prots on 2 new phones... I doubt it.

Any input would be heplfull. thanks!

well maybe you have to erase everything on the card
what i have known is that if you have to put your card to a new phone you first have to go to the security and click on "reformat to new phone" on the first phone then format on the new phone.
-i want to know what kind of drive you used to put on the mp3?
-there's one in officemax and walmart and both said you could format mp3's

I have formated the card even to the extent of writing the eintire card with 0's with SanDisks secure erase utility that returns it to factory specs. Also windows XP. Otherwise my primary way of writing data to it is with the regular sandisk adapter that make it full size SD and I have an HP and a Dell laptop with SD ports built in that I have been writing data with. Work great in the first 8940... not with the others. I have seen some posts out there saying this is a software update issue that might be addressed eventually. I am so frustrated at this point , I am running out of freash ideas. thanks

What firmware version is on your original phone, and what version is on the new phones?

H/W- tx-160c rev 04
s/w- d160ve4t08_4.174

These are off the new handset. I no longer have the old one, it was returned to Verizon for the warranty. thanks

Hmm. Those are the same versions I have. I just saved everything I wanted on my SD card, and the tried formatting it. It worked just fine.

i work as atech for a third party company contracted by verizon wireless, to in store replacements and troubleshooting this is what we tell customer s with the 8940.

1st: the upgrade does not do anything to take away mp3 functionality or SD card.

2nd: the s/w update is authored by ut/starcomm-audiovox, then put through testing by vzw. after passing testing it is pushed to the stores.

3rd: the newest s/w upgrade fixes a problem with 1x "extended network" and vzw evdo prl's. the phone didn't know how to handle 2 different carrier prl''s so it froze up and reset.

4: if you get new phone, back up miniSD to computer. turn new phone off and insert card. ppower on phone then go to security and format card. take the card out put it into computre and voila!

if this doesn't work and you've replaced the phone look at the card as the problem

say!
akirkbride, is there any chance i can back up my sd card to the computer if i already formatted it to the phone?
i want to back it up just in case i need to change to a new phone...
how can u put it back to the factory specs?

great news as i said before there was a problem with some of the phones software but i went to verizon today and they updated it, it has the same number just that it fixes some of the problems people were having with the minisd

if you have any thing in the card back it up to computer before the reformat as it will blank the card.

as far as the s/w update, it did fix some SD card issues. but those were so far and few between. verizon wasn't sure what the deal with the card was, as they were unable to duplicate the issue. but they went ahead and fixed as part of the s/w upgrade.
