Eatoni Sues to Stop RIM
By Susan Rush
September 14, 2005

Research In Motion (RIM) is facing another patent battle. The latest: Predictive-text technology developer Eatoni Ergonomics is suing to stop RIM from manufacturing and selling its 7100 line of products.

In its case pending before a Texas court, Eatoni alleges the RIM 7100 series of devices infringes on its fundamental patent on "reduced keyboards and related technology which look, feel and act like a full Qwerty keyboard."

The company is asking the court to grant a permanent injunction against the manufacture and sale of the devices.

RIM could not be immediately reached for comment, but in the court filing, the BlackBerry device maker contends Eatoni's patents are invalid, according to Eatoni.

T-Mobile also is named in the suit, Eatoni says.

RIM is entrenched in another legal battle with NTP. The companies had reached a tentative agreement of the intellectual property dispute, but RIM asked the case be remanded back to court after the sides failed to hammer out a definitive deal. While the U.S. Patents and Trademark Office has struck down several NTP patent claims, seven remain in question. If NTP prevails, RIM would be force to halt BlackBerry sales in the United States.

Well, I wouldn't use your analogy , but I agree, RIM is a target of anyone jealous of their success.
