MPx 220 driver?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok, so I am trying to run the 1.43 offline updater for my phone.

It tells me I need the driver for the phone. I've searched on here, and not found where to get it.

So, where can I get the usb smartphone driver?

I have searched, and the one link I saw, I didn't find a driver there.

thanks.

The link is on my blog in the instructions on how to upgrade the ROM.

Got it, thanks.

Now, however, when I pull the battery and plug the phone in, it comes up as found new hardware:

USB data cable

According to the instructions with the updater, it should come up with:

"USB Device" or "Smartphone 2002 Wireless USB Modem"

Additionally, if I try to direct it to the smartphon.inf file, it doesn't take it.

I tell it I want to specify a location, and it still asks for the manufacturer's disc. Doesn't take the .inf, and gives me the options of diabling the device or being prompted later to install the .inf.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks again.

Oh, BTW, I decided on the 1.43 for the time being.

And, the whole reason for trying to get the driver installed is because the update wizard tells me its not installed.

Also, Activesyn doesn't see the phone either.

Thats the driver I use and it works fine. If it doens't work go to www.hellomoto.com, select your country and click the support button and look for it there.

If I had mobile phone tools on the computer before, would that create a problem installing the new device?

Posted by: Omega2008

Could be since that USB driver won't work with the MPx 220. Delete that driver, install the smartphone driver and reinstall the Moto USB driver and you should be able to use MPT with your other Moto phones and still be able to use the Smartphone USB driver for your MPx 220.

Posted by: over2land

well, I think I deleted the drivers...

I went through the add/remove hardware wizard, and deleted the 3 instances for "usb data cable" and the two instances of "motorola usb modem"

But of course, friggin activesync doesn't see the phone.

And, if activesync can't see it, the updater won't work.

WTF?

Posted by: Omega2008

Go to device manager and plug your phone in and see if an new devices appear if not, uninstall activesync and make sure that the USB driver for Moto is not in Device manager.

OK, so noooow I'm gonna remove MPT, the updater, and anything that looks like it has anything to do with motorola.

Anything else you can think of for me to remove?

I'm just trying to get rid of whatever it is that is keeping windows from allowing me to install this driver the way everyone says it should install.

Posted by: over2land

I deleted all those programs.

Went to device manager like you said, and the phone comes up under modems.

It's listed as "Smartphone wireless USB modem" under modems.

Posted by: over2land

Now, in device manager (after a shutdown/reboot)

it shows up as other devices and as a usb data cable again.

I'm on Win2K pro, if that helps.

Ok, so I tried on 3 computers at work.

And now, at home, and still no dice. It must be the way I am installing it.

On every computer it comes up as a USB data cable.

If I tell it to search for drivers, and then send it to the folder with the .inf, it fails. Every time, every computer.

The other option is to pick from a list of device types and then send it lookign for a file. I do this, then choose modems from the list, then send it to the folder. It looks as though it works, but after a shutdown/reboot, the device manage tells me it's using a .sys file for the driver, not the .inf.

And so, the only thing I can figure is I need to pick something else from that list. What?

Posted by: over2land

In fact, going through device manager...

It's looking for all .sys files for the drivers.

Posted by: over2land

So I guess no one has a clue what's up with this thing?

Posted by: over2land

I got it...

For anyone's future reference. I dunno how weird this is, but I ended up using the drive install utility for the manufacturer of my USB cable: www.mobilaction.com

From there on it was downhill.

Thanks for the attempted help though.

I have been all over Moto's site and smartphon.inf just doesnt seem to be there anymore. Most of the direct links posted in these forums end up on a http error 500 and searching for it in the support site only come up with refrences to it and no link to download it. If any one has this driver lying around and can post it I would appreciate it.

It's installed when you install activesync which you can get for free from microsoft.

Yes, I know activesync is free, and I have it installed, though it doesnt leave smartphon.inf on the drive anywhere when its finished that I can find. I wasnt looking for the funtionality of the result of installing the driver anyway (well, ok I guess I am but not on a system that is running activesync) I am looking for the file specifically. I am sure someone has the original Moto file lying around...
